Essays - I am a Survivor of Rape I am a survivor of rape. I say that tongue in cheek. I am still here. I am alive and breathing and struggling to take back what is mine. My pride, my dignity, my self worth, my self love, my sensuality, my sexuality, my sense of security, my sense of empowerment and my joy for life. I know that sounds silly or even odd that so much can be lost so quickly by a random act of violence. I never before thought it was possible to take such things from a person. I am grappling to reclaim them. My battle seems at times futile and other times triumphant. I was raped 17 months ago. I was drugged, tied up and blindfolded... That single four-letter word, 'Rape' has changed my life forever. It has changed my family's lives and everyone and anyone who comes in contact with me. I am not the "Kim" that existed before. As I journey through recovery I am evolving and changing into the survivor not the victim I was the day or week or month before. I lived in a cloud of masked pain and numbness until I decided I wanted my life back. I refused to allow any more time lost. My parents needed their daughter back. I needed me back. I fought hard to reclaim my voice. I still struggle with the silence. Silence used to mean peace.........now since my rape it means suppression. I will not be silent. I want to be counted in the numbers of men and women who have been violated with rape. I want to be counted as one of the men and women who have survived and have triumphed and have blossomed into a stronger and renewed person. I weathered the storm and am encompassing the new growth that comes from the turbulence. I am alive and I am stronger than I was before. I have relearned to touch and taste and smell and feel. I am here.
Realistically, men could never last a day in a woman’s shoes. Men feel they have power and control over women. Women are only seen as objects and all they are meant to do is housework and raise children. Being a woman is hard work. It requires much courage and motivation. “I had to fight to control my trembling and shaky voice. I had to pretend it wasn’t as all that. I was asked to describe the man who raped me. I did so” (p. 178). As strong as a woman is, she is still vulnerable. The horrifying reality of being raped never broke April. It gave her just enough courage to walk away and forgive those that did her wrong. Sometimes a traumatizing experience can dramatically change a person’s life for the better. It gives them wisdom, strength and the faith that things will get
In this experiment we positioned a marble ball on a wooden roller coaster positioned on a physics stand in the sixth hole. Throughout the experiment, we used an electronic timer to record the time of the marble where it passed through the light beam of its clamp. We positioned the clamp at a certain point on the roller coaster and measured the distance from the marble to the clamp; the height of the clamp; and finally the time the ball traveled through the clamp. After we recorded these different figures we calculated the speed of the marble from the given distance traveled and the time. We repeated the step 14 times, then proceeded to graph the speed and the height. Next, we took the measurements of position of the clamp, height, and speed and calculated the potential energy, the kinetic energy, and the total energy. Total energy calculated as mentioned before. Potential energy is taking the mass (m) which is 28.1g times gravity (g) which is 9.8 m/s2 times the height. Kinetic energy is one-half times the mass (m) times velocity (v2). Finally we graphed the calculated kinetic, potential, and total energies of this experiment.
According to the authors of “Enhancing Care and Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors on Canadian Campuses”, “Sexual assault has immediate and long-term health consequences for victims including suicide, HIV infection, depression, and social isolation,” (Quinlan, Clarke, and Miller). Another common side effect these victims face is post-traumatic stress disorder. Someone experiencing PTSD may have random outburst of anger, have trouble concentrating on day to day tasks, or may even have flashbacks of their attack. These consequences make it hard for victims to get back into the normal routine of everyday life (“Effects of Sexual Assault”). In a case at Amherst College a young women named Angie Epifano faced many of these consequences after she was raped by an acquaintance in one of the college’s dormitories. While immediately choosing to ignore what had happened to her Epifano soon became an emotional wreck. Before the attack Epifano had believed herself to be an extremely strong and independent individual. In an article done on Epifano’s story she stated “Everything I had believed myself to be was gone in 30 minutes,” (Epifano). Sexual assault takes away a piece of someone. With their hopes and dreams clouded by the tragedy they have endured, victims face a lifetime of
Our group called “Kinder” has decided to estimate the drag coefficient on Kinder’s egg container which is quite similar to the cylinder. Particularly that cylinder is experiencing the flow over its flat face. Its drag coefficient is going to be measured in fluid of air wind. The airflow would be supplied by ordinary hair dryer. The velocity of air wind will be measured by the help of anemometer, which we would construct by ourselves with improvised materials such as plastic cups, pencil, pin and straws. Particularly the coefficient of drag is going to be measured by the hanging object on pendulum and directing the airflow to the flat face. The relevance of our shape is that it could be used in helicopter construction due to the similarity of basis of it. In addition, some bullets’ drag coefficient can be also calculated with the help of the container.
“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. I was so terrified at the time I felt like I had no other options. I still feel ashamed about my actions and for a while I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror,” she told me. Linda isn’t alone; every year in the United States, 237,868 women are raped, ages 12 and older.... ...
Rape is not just an action against an individual, but a violent crime that can scar a life
"I was raped," the girl said to me overtaken with tears. I was taken by surprise and was at a complete loss for words. She had just taken one of the darkest secrets of her life and brought it out to the splendid light for just me to gaze upon. A little apprehensive, I responded, "I'm sorry." What is one to say at the revelation of such a horrid thing? Anything else I thought of saying sounded stupid and insensitive, so I opted for silence and hugged her to comfort her to the best of my ability. A few months later the girl came to me and thanked me. She said that my gesture meant more to her than anything anyone else had said about the rape. I then realized that sometimes, if not most of the time, actions can speak louder than words. The parts of us that are less vocal, such as our clothing, gestures, facial expressions, etc. can be more impacting than words.

Sexual assault is an offense that plagues many U.S. citizens. Although some studies show that rape is on the decline, other studies report that the phenomena actually occuring is that less rape victims are reporting the crime. In fact, approximately 68% of sexual assaults go unreported to the police according to the U.S. Department of Justice in a National Crime Victimization Survey from 2008-2012. It is common knowledge that rape victims are usually severely traumatized after the event, which leaves them susceptible to various emotions such as shame, anxiety, numbness, fear, denial, and guilt. Because of this, many rape victims decide to repress their experience and let it go unheard. However, not only does this prevent them from healing emotionally,
...nd others. Be that voice that many don’t have and are afraid to come out. Help those who have suffered tremendous pain and suffering. There is so much to life that no one should feel violated and ashamed for what has happened to them. Everyone deserves a right to live in safety and enjoy life without being in fear all the time. Report those who have committed rape and seek help immediately. It is everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other. There are so many support groups and online support from people who have been raped and have suffered and overcome this tragic happening. Many will never forget what it was like to suffer and be raped, there is always hope for recovery and living a life of happiness. Report those rapists and put them in jail for their terrible actions. No one deserves to be violated by anyone. Everyone deserves to be respected and loved.
It is usually a very painful journey to recovery for persons who have suffered rape. There are so many persons in our Jamaican society who continue to suffer in silence, then struggle to recover without seeking professional help. Many persons cannot effectively deal with the aftermath of rape, but they continue to struggle in silence, some reencountering further abuse.
Survivors often find it difficult to recover fully after they are sexually assaulted. The feel like the should have done something to prevent what was happening to them. Kimberly A. Lonsway, PhD and Sergeant Joanne Archambault from End Violence Against Women International stress that victims often disassociate. “Many victims describe experiencing a feeling of paralysis during the sexual assault that is often referred to as “frozen fright.” With this type of reaction, victims feel as if they are paralyzed during the sexual assault and are unable to think, act, or respond in ways that they would if they weren’t experiencing such significant trauma.” They don’t know what to do, and so they do nothing. Looking back, it seems painfully obvious to them what they should have done. However, even when someone fights back, that sometimes doesn’t do anything. Sexual assault is not about sex. It’s about
“Rape is a crime that combines sex and violence, that makes sex the weapon in an act of violence.”(Kimmel 257) Because of this, rape is often traumatic for the victim of a rape. Many victims undergo what is known as rape trauma syndrome, “…rape trauma syndrome, consisting of an acute stage, where the primary response is fear, followed by a reorganization stage, characterized by phobias, insomnia, sexual dysfunctions, and major changes in life-style.”(Chandler et al pp. 248) These are some of the psychological side effects that women must endure after the rape. There are also other factors, relating to the individual that effect rape trauma they include, “age, prior sexual experience, ethnicity, and response of significant others to the victim. Factors relating to the sexual assault, such as degree of violence and the relationship between the victim and the assailant also affect trauma.”(Chandler et al pp 249) Overall, is is safe to say that there are many psychological effects of rape that allows women to fear the attack of a rape.
In 1797 the Frenchman Andre Jacques Garnerin performed the first parachute plunge from an aircraft using a basket below an open parachute, which was made of silk and solidified with supporting poles (The History of Sport Parachuting). When the first parachute was dropped, physicists didn’t have a wealth of knowledge about the physics that supported skydiving. Ever since the first drop, skydiving has been an evolving sport, as this is due to the developing knowledge of physics. Skydiving is perceived as a very risky sport in the eyes of the public; therefore, in order for the sport to continue, physicists needed to discover ways to reduce the risks involved. They were successful in doing this by developing better equipment and techniques. The economical impact of skydiving has been huge. The research involved in the design of the chute, the materials used, and the engineering invo...
It’s been almost four years now, and I’ve recovered quite well. I am still currently with Mike, who does not hold the fact that I was raped against me. He listens to me when I need to talk about it, holds me when I need to be held, and does so without judging me. Telling him was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. Now all I have to do is tell Julie.
