I Was Raped by My Teacher
Ken was my voice teacher. I never admired anyone more than him. He meant the world to me. It would be safe to say that we did not have a typical teacher/student relationship. I was infatuated with him. He was tall dark and had the voice of an angel. But he was eleven years older than I was, and he was my teacher. I learned from him, I confided in him, and I trusted him. I never pictured myself being with him. I never dreamt he would think of me as a 'woman' and not just a love-stricken seventeen year-old vocal student.
When I began my lessons with Ken, they took place at school, but then somewhere down the line, he wanted them to be at his house. He was the teacher, and I was told that you never argued with what the teacher had to say. Our next lesson, I showed up at his house at 1:00 sharp, ready to sing. I had never been to his house before, and I was a little nervous about seeing it. However, when he opened the door and greeted me with his cute little smile, I knew there was nothing to be nervous about. We started our lesson by singing a few songs for fun (we always sang duets together). He said that I wasn't singing my best and asked if I was stressed. Of course I was stressed! I was the lead in our school musical and it would open in two weeks. "One can never reach their full potential when they are stressed," he said, as he began to rub my shoulders. This was weird for me, but like I said, he was the teacher, and you never argue with the teacher. We finished our lesson, I thanked him and I was on my way out. Before I left though, he took my face in his hands, and he kissed me goodbye. I didn't really know what to do. Had that just happened? Did he just kiss me? Did I kiss him back? Is that wrong? He's too old! I'm too young! He's my teacher! We spoke on the phone several times that week, but never brought up the kiss.

Before applying to these accredited institutions most students do not look up the school 's past records of sexual assault and rape on their campus.College campuses have failed to keep students safe the system they use has failed to protect and obtain justice for those that have been victims of sexual assault. Society plays a huge part in how young adults view sexual assault. From young age girls are told “if he’s bothering you it 's because he likes you”, and boys aren 't held accountable for their actions because “boys will be boys”. At what time does it stop being a game. At what age is it not acceptable for boys to mistreat girls, when is the line drawn and, what is the punishment for when this line is crossed.
Society’s role in criminalizing statutory rape cases play a big part on how people look at the different cases. In society everyone expects for a younger girl to be with an older guy, so people may not see a priority in statutory rape laws. “Considering that it is customary for women to date and marry slightly older men” (M.W., 1998). Since it is not abnormal for younger girls and older guys to be together most people do not see an age gap of about three years that big of a deal. But if these people do not report a case of statutory rape then they are technically endangering a minor. Males in society do not see male statutory rape victims as victims. These men look at it as a pat on the back to the young boys who were sexually active with adult women. The men also make comments saying that they wish they could have been in that position when they were young. Some people in today’s society do not understand the priority of really enforcing statutory rape cases unless there is a huge age difference or the victim was a young girl instead of a boy. The media has a big part in which cases will be recognized. The media tends to show female victims and adult male offenders more than they would male victims and adult female offenders. Female offenders should be broadcasted just as much as the men and should not get privileges just because they are women.
As seniors in high school are committed to colleges and getting excited for some of the best years of their lives, they are preparing for early classes, late nights and good times. These teens have been looking forward to these years that have seemed to come so fast. Of course they’re getting excited about picking their dream job and looking forward to meeting life long friends that they should be able to trust. No one thinks about or mentions the number of rapes on college campuses. If the first thing colleges mentioned was the reported rapes on their campuses, would that change the minds of kids that have had a certain college in mind? Besides the reported date rapes, what about the estimated sexual assaults that go unreported? Knowing the facts and statistics about colleges and how they handle sexual assault cases would make anyone getting ready for college think twice about how safe they’re being and who they are trusting.
Common sense seems to dictate that statutory rape laws are too tough on teenagers. Most people in our society do not realize that they break the law everyday. It is often said that statutory rape is committed a lot more than the people hear about. Teens that go to the same school as their younger mate, are getting arresting for the consensual interactions that they are doing. Statutory rape is when someone underage is sexually active with an “adult” meaning 17 or older. It has become more serious in some cases more than others. Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 go to high school together; therefore, some will get involved with one another depending on their feelings. The law of statutory rape is impacting our society by the law arresting teenagers and charging them like they are adults, when it is not their fault; they go to school with the minors. After looking at all the research, it seems as if they charge teens more than they charge the actual adults (of ages 20 and older). Law officials should think twice before arresting teens who are still in high school and have not done anything truly wrong; they should start putting more fault on the actual adults that know better.

Studies show that 1 in 16 men will be sexually assaulted while in college, and these studies have also shown that 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted while in college. These ratios may not even be entirely accurate, as studies also show that 90% of all rape cases go unreported by their victims. Studies have also shown that 65% of the self reported sexual violators have had multiple victims in the past. According to a report done by CNN a survey of 150,000 students across 27 Universities participated in a survey whose focus was to college information on students that have been sexually harassed, assaulted, or raped. And the consensus was that 23% of these students have been sexually assaulted to some degree. 50% of students who have later reported these incidents commented that they didn’t report the incident sooner because they didn’t believe that it was “serious enough.” These numbers are startling, and they show that sexual assault is a real danger to the student populations of our nation’s campuses.

The schools and teachers cannot just give into the student’s fear of what they are learning that isn’t going to help them, they are just making it worse and not preparing them for the real world.
