The teens life in 1790 was much different. They had different responsibilities, work types, and different ways to have fun. The teens acted differently as well, because of their different life way. As a teen in 1790, you were expected to do many things. The teens, and even some children would be forced to work as an apprentice, or just in the family business. This caused them to work nonstop, and grow accustomed to it. They would not only get a job, but be expected to do anything an older person tells them to. This is probably what the mother in the book Fever 1793, refers to when she says, “Children were seen not heard.” Suggesting that they were obedient and did not complain. The teens were not only to work, but take on responsibilities,
like going to school. The boys who were in wealthier families were supposed to take on an apprenticeship for part of their schooling. The were mostly taught writing and reading and other such necessaries they would need in future life. They were also to take on the responsibilities of getting married around the age of 16, and 17. That is just a few of the responsibilities of the teens of 1790 to take on. The teens also had fun, and were not forced to just work all the time. Although they did have fun, it was not the same as t.v. And video games as today, instead they would do things like go fishing. They would go fishing with friends or just by themselves. The teens would also play outside quite a bit. They did not have as nice of homes as we have today, so they would spend more time outside playing in the yard. Those are a few ways the teens of 1790 enjoyed themselves. In 1790 the teens were not like teens today. This can be seen through the responsibilities, the way of entertainment, and even by how they work. They had different lifestyles partly because the technology we have today was inexistent.
At some point in a person's life, they must make the transition from childhood to adulthood. In the late 1700’s and early 1800’s big business began to boom. For the first time companies were developing large factories to manufacture their goods. Due to the new mechanics and cheap labor, factory owners could now produce their goods at a cheaper rate. As big businesses brought wealth and capitalism, it also widened the gap between the wealthy elite and the poor. One class in particular was horribly affected by the growth of big factories. This class was the poor working class. According to the article “Child Labor in the United States” written by Robert Whaples, a big proportion of the labour work force was made up of children: “In 1820 children aged 15 and under made up 23 percent of the manufacturing labor force of the industrializing

For instance, a boy might end up tending to the field for an ill parent, or a young girl might be forced to take care for her younger siblings after her mother dies. Often, while this work was somewhat taxing for children, it was expected of them and it was considered a family responsibility for them to assist their parents in difficult situations. This was considered chores, and it was necessary for the survival of these families. However, this attitude that it was a child’s duty to assist their parents did contribute to the development of child labor. Compared to people in the twenty-first century, with all their modern conveniences and technological advances, the life of any early-American seems difficult. However, the lives of children were among the most arduous. Linda Pollock states in her book Forgotten Children that between 1660 and 1800 families -and society in general- became more affectionate, child-oriented, and permissive of uniqueness and unstructured time (67). Although this may be true, many other sources depict the lives of children as taxing and oppressive at best. Children of the time were either forced to abandon education for their family contributions, or had to balance school with a full day's work ("Education"). Even when they were not in school or doing manual labor, their day-to-day lives were uncomfortable and harsh (Kids). Social status, as is expected, was a key factor in determining how hard a child's life would be (Murray 9). Although many children at the time had it easier than others they were all asked at an early age to take on adult responsibilities. The lives of all children in 1800 were mundane and difficult due to family and societal expectations for labor, schooling, and maturity.

Any people can become an activist. I always hear adults saying “You’re too young to be an activist” and all that other dumb stuff they say. Imagine if you’re best friend was shot at a school shooting. Would you not protest over your best friend being shot? This shows that you care for someone and want to CHANGE gun control or whatever happened that you are protesting. Protesting is when you don’t agree with what someone has done and you rally on the streets trying to change a law about what happened. They would go from just a few chores to full responsibility of a family. This is when teens really wanted to express themselves and show that they are not yet ready to grow up. Teenagers split themselves up into two groups; those who wanted to conform to the social norms and those who wanted to rebel against it. The social norms would wear what their parent expected them to wear like skirts below their knees, pants and sweaters and for the boys khaki pants with a polo shirt or dress shirt with a tie.* Were as the rebellious ones wore short skirts and short tops and the boys jeans with a white shirt and a jean jacket that there parents didn't approve of. * There outfits reflect on their environment and their values and expresses who they are. An example of teenagers and their outfits is from the book and movie “The Outsiders”. This shows the different groups of people and how they fit into their environments. A quote from the book is “It was my pride. It was long and silky...Our hair labeled us greasers, too – it was our trademark. The one thing we were proud of. “(71). Teens today do things a lot differently. Girls wear clothing that shows more skin. Guys wear oversized pants and oversized shirts. A lot of today's teens like to party, so some will get fake ID's so they can get into 21 and over clubs. Here, they can get alcohol easily. They can even get their hands on illegal drugs. Their taste in music is much different as well. There is a wide variety of styles now, many of which include, rock, pop, dance, R&B, and rap. Today's teens also have technology all around them. They can play video games, computer games, go on the internet, watch television and talk on their cell phones, while the teens of the forties could listen to the radio and talk on the phone.
Adolescence, according to Hall (1916), is a period that begins at puberty for about 12 to 13 years, and it ends late at 22 years to 25 years of age.
