Since teenage drivers are often discriminated against for their driving skills, improvements are being looked into. A survey on news stands today shows, “61 percent of teens admit to risky driving habits” (“Teens Risky Driving” 1). Most teens view their driving as safe; however, a large proportion of teens are dangerous to others on the road. While the rates of dangerous teenage drivers are a high hazard, consequences are in store. Because of dangerous habits teenagers pursue on the road, reckless teenage driving has become a number one killer. Even though teenage drivers complete a driver education program in order to obtain a permit before a full license, teenagers need improvement on being aware of their actions and others while traveling on the road.
While driving with parents, teens continue to make bad decisions. Generally, teens learn to drive by observing habits of their parents; therefore, teens are more likely to make hasty decisions behind the wheel according to their driving experiences with parents. A study conducted by Paul Condrin shows that ‘“And through this study, the type of parent involvement that works is clear - parents need to know the laws and teen-driving rules of their state, set clear expectations with their teens about what safe driving is, and establish and enforce consequences should those laws be broken or expectations not be met”’ (quoted in “Detering Dangerous Driving" 1). This means if parents enforce consequences for bad driving habits, teens will be more aware of their actions. Consequently, a chain reaction of events occurs. Even though teenagers often make dangerous decisions behind the wheel, most drive without adult supervision when they first obtain their license. With the immaturity of teens combined with the lack of driving skills, disasters are still occurring. Although most teens believe their driving is becoming safer, it is a lie. States are taking charge by giving out driving curfews to teens; fourteen states have set limits as to how many passengers may be allowed in the vehicle with young drivers. Although teenagers go through tests and programs before obtaining a full license, teens are not fully prepared; therefore, teens are causing dangerous events to take place.
In this article written by the author Bruce Feiler, titled “Teenage Drivers? Be Very Afraid”, he talks about how he suggest the parents to stop being helicopter parents and allow their children to be independent. However, other professionals’ suggestions are the opposite when teenagers start to drive. As a result of the teenagers’ immaturity, the parents are told to be more involved because their child’s life may be in danger. As stated in the article by Nichole Moris “the most dangerous two years of your life are between 16 and 17, and the reason for that is driving.” There are various factors that play huge roles through this phrase of the teenagers’ life: other passengers, cellphones, and parents. In 2013, under a million teenage drivers were involved in police-reported crashes, according to AAA. The accidents could have been more but many teenage accidents go unreported. As a result, one of their recommendations to the parents is to not allow their children to drive with other passengers: other passengers can big a huge distraction and could increase the rate of crashes by 44 percent. That risk doubles with a second passenger and quadruples with three or more. Furthermore, as technology has taken over teenagers’ lives, the parents should suggest to those teenagers who insists on using the phones that the only safe place for it to be: in a dock, at eye level, on the dashboard. The worst place is the cup holder, the driver’s lap, and the passenger’s seat. In 2008; 81% of teenage crash deaths were passenger vehicle occupants, 31% of teenage drivers killed had been drinking alcohol, 55% were not buckled up, and 37% of male teenage drivers involved in fatalities were speeding. Teenagers who drink and drive have a greater risk of serious crashes than older drivers with equal blood alcohol concentrations. Teens do not wear seat/safety belts as much as adults. Teens tend to take more risks due to overconfidence in their abilities. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.
Teens only make up seventeen percent of the population today, but almost twenty percent of fatal crashes are due to teenagers behind the wheel. Growing numbers suggest changing the driving age to eighteen and some even believe that changing it to twenty-one may save even more lives. With a sixteen year old behind the wheel, accidents are even more likely to occur when compared to a seventeen year old (Boulard). With so much new technology in today’s society there are more distractions on the road than ever before; therefore the legal driving age should be raised to save more lives. If we do not act quickly, then more lives will be lost.

Teenagers don’t want to be inconvenient with having to wait to respond to their friends about the latest party or school event that’s coming up. Driving is just as good of time as any to text their best friends about the upcoming weekend or update their Facebook status in the mind of a young adult. Even though most teens know they shouldn’t text and drive many are guilty of doing it several times a day. An overwhelming 75% of teens even admit to text messaging while driving (“Distracted Driving,” 2016). Young drivers are more likely to get into an accident due to lack of experience than that of any other driver on the road. Add in texting to the mix it is a recipe for disaster. About 54% of teenage motor vehicle crash deaths occur on Friday, Saturday or Sunday – with Saturday being the deadliest day of the week for teens (Hosansky, 2012). Teenage motor vehicle fatalities are at the highest in the summer months.
More than 5,000 teenagers die while driving each year in the United States (Gregory). In my opinion this is due to three different, yet equally important factors. The first factor is that the teenage mind is yet to be fully developed, causing them to make irresponsible and sometimes reckless decisions. The second factor is that the experience of driving has evolved since the original driving age was established in the early 20th century. The third and final aspect to take into consideration would be that driving is the lowest minimum age of any adult restricted activity in the United States. Although, it can be one of the more harmful, not only to the perspective driver but his or her surroundings as well. Taking all three of these factors into account I believe the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 to decrease the accident rate amongst teenagers.
Areas including falls, poisoning, crashes, and burns play a huge part in the amount of cases that get treated at the emergency department on a regular basis. The public need to have access to prevention at their fingertips otherwise they would not go looking for the information that can possibly save their lives. One of the biggest causes of unintentional injury is motor vehicle crashes with can be avoided most of the times. When it comes to adolescents they are known to be very distracted while operating a car. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2013 there were 33,804 deaths caused by motor vehicle, 2,163 teens killed and over 240,000 of them hospitalized. Teens have so much going against them when driving like speeding, drinking, texting, not wearing a seatbelt, and not being able to assess situations in a timely manner. Graduated driver licensing programs are around which gives teens longer practice periods, limitations during high risk conditions, and greater parent participation. These programs proved to reduce crashes among teens, but is more effective when the parents enforce all of the rules. Adding to this type of program should have incentives to both teens and parents. As expected, most if not all teens will disagree with that. But there are some safe teen drivers that are thrown into the bad teen driving category just because they are a teenager that drives. If there are some good teen drivers, then do all teens really need more drivers education? Samantha Williams is a senior at Winchester Community High School that has an answer to this question. “I do consider myself to be a safe driver. I’m always aware of my surroundings when I’m driving, and I always stay away from any distractions” (Question 1). She is intentionally aware of her surroundings and stays focused while driving. The government should not make more regulations and rules for all teen drivers when there are many teen drivers like Samantha on the roads. There are even some adults that believe not all teen drivers are bad drivers. Gregory explains, “ The teen driving issues are not about age and maturity as they are about making good choices and demonstrating exceptional behavior, whether they start that driving experience at 16, 17, or 18” (1). Driving a car and obtaining a driver’s license does perhaps seem to provide people with a great sense of independence and freedom. Teenagers need to feel independent in order to learn to become successful on their own as well as realize how to handle life situations on their own, and having a license seems the perfect start and most effective way to do so. When teenagers feel this independence they tend to act more mature, knowing the responsibilities they must now carry on their own (More4Kids). Teenagers often look forward to the freedom that driving offers as well.
