Teenager's Misguided Decisions

Teenagers: authoritarian figures despise them but why? Is it because they are spoiled or just plain rude? Author T. Coraghessan Boyle writes about two teenagers that make a misguided decision to hide the main character China’s pregnancy, along with her boyfriend Jeremy. After hiding the pregnancy and having the child both decide to throw the baby in the dumpster behind the hotel at which China decided to deliver the child at. Why would two teenagers fresh out of high school make this wrongful decision and throw their child away? The reason the two decided to make this misguided decision could possibly be because neither China or Jeremy had never recieved a consequence for their actions growing up. One might think that the word spoiled means one’s parents do not care what happens to their child or children. In “The Love of My Life” The parents of China and Jeremy do not care what their children do. Both teenagers go on unsupervised camping trips together, and stay at each other’s houses unsupervised. Clearly the parents of China and Jeremy do not care about what their children do. Giving teenagers permission to stay at each other’s houses and go on unsupervised outings are considered just as if the parents are allowing them to have sex. “They were going up into the Catskills, to a lake he’d found on a map, and they were going to be together, without interruption, without telephones, automobiles, parents, teachers, friends, relatives, and pets for a full five days” (Boyle 559). This would be considered that both teens are spoiled because they know what happens after they have sex, there are chances, chances of pregnancy or STDs but they do not care, they are both selfish all they care about is having sex. “But she had forgotten to pack her pills and he has only two condoms with him, and it wasn’t as if there were a drugstore around the corner” (Boyle 560). Consequences Both realize that there are consequences, but because they have never received consequences because they are spoiled, they do not care until they have a child. Once Jeremy finds out China is pregnant they try to hide it, “Baggy clothes, that was the key, all in black, cargo pants, flowing dresses, a jacket even the summer” (Boyle 561). Both have consequences after having unprotected sex, even then China and Jeremy did not care because they had been spoiled, because they never received consequences growing
