When I was young, I lived in fear of violence. Violence from people around me and other friends in school made me feel like humans are born to be aggressive and violent. When I saw a fight between students in my school, I felt terrible; students attacked one another with anything that they had in their hands. Since that day, I have been looking for a solution that would change human behavior, especially children and teenagers because they will be the future of any country. In my observation, teenage violence is influenced by many factors: video games, drugs and alcohol, and poverty. These factors make teenagers more aggressive and violent. In those factors, video games are the most popular with teenagers these days since they can find it in many forms: tablet, laptop, even in smart phones. In current time, teenage violence has become a major problem in our society, but teenage violence prevention may be easy with the help of parents, teachers, religious organizations, and even our government. Our help will change teenagers’ behaviors and that would make our country a peaceful place to live. “When you hear the tragic, heart-wrenching stories such as what happened in Newtown, Conn., you wonder how exposure to violent games de-sensitizes people to the act of killing other people. In today’s society, highly addicting video games involving strong violence and language, explicit sexuality and crime often lead to inappropriate behaviors. Role playing games or RPGs allow us to step into a virtual world, cutting ourselves off from worldly distractions. Nowadays, the age range for people who play these extremely graphic games are anywhere from six to eighteen and are surprisingly hazardous to young children’s health. A study gave a group of players playing a violent video game the chance to blast a painful sound into their opponent's ear in order to get the upper advantage. They also gave another group playing non violent games, the same opportunity. The study showed that overall the gamers playing violent video games were more prone to inflict more pain on their enemies, unlike the other group who inflicted considerably less pain. Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D who did this study agrees, “violent video games desensitize players to violence, and makes them more violent in real life" (McGonigal). Young adults are exposed to these terrifying images, harming their mental health. In recent events, a young eight year old boy shot his grandmother after playing Grand Theft Auto. This game is the epitome of why young people should not be playing these games. It is comprised of murder, drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behavior, violence and general disrespect for women, and foul language. Do you think kids get more and more violent after playing video games? I think that kids do get more violent and learn more negative things from video games. Such as when kids play games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty they want to shot and kill people. Games like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are rated M for a reason. An M rated game means mature, so you have to be 17 or older to purchase. Young 13 year olds should not be playing these games and getting so much negativity out of the game. So I think video games do cause kids and teens to do violent things.
Since the 1970 video games have become more popular than ever before. Generating 11.7 billions of dollars of sells every year or more, the video game industry is considered one of the largest industries in this century. However, video games have been a topic of controversy. With the sales of violent video games going up and the increased violence in schools and teenagers, video games are always to blame. Many people speculate that video games are the cause on why many teenagers have developed aggressive and violent behavior, are desensitize to violence, and the increase violence in schools and public places. In contradiction, video games have little or no fault in teenagers’ violent behavior and shouldn’t always be blamed.
The shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado killing thirteen students and teachers shocked the world. “They were video gamers who seemed to be acting out some dark digital fantasy. It was as if all that exposure to computerized violence gave them the idea to go on a rampage – or at least fueled their urges” (Carey 1). The shooters of this incident learned their deadly skills from video games. Seventy percent of children ages eight to eighteen have access to violent video games at their home. “Boys who play Teen or Mature-rated games for a minimum of 40 minutes a day may witness over 180 incidents of aggression per day, or 5,400 incidents per month”(Smith, S.L., Lachlan, K.A., & Tamborini, R). Children that play violent video games at such a young age and experiencing such violent actions will start to increase in aggressive thoughts, feelings, and aggressive behavior.
The more kills, wounds, hit & runs or attacks the player accomplishes in the game the higher the score and more reward. This action is consistent in most games with a high violent content. Research studies have shown that the exposure of violence in video games does not “turn off” because the game is turned off, but rather the violent behavior displayed in the video game then reenacts and manifests itself in the behavior of the child (Anderson & Dill, 2000; Ballad & West, 1996; Bushman & Anderson, 2002). In study presented by Professor Jeanne Funk in 2004 review 150 fourth and fifth graders and how violent video games lowered the amounts of empathy, a person’s ability to understand another’s feelings, in the player.
Video games are widely popular as a form of entertainment for young children and teenagers in the United States, and many of these games contain forms of violence. Because this causes exposure to such graphic images for many children, there has been a concern that these violent forms of entertainment affect these children. Numerous studies conducted by groups of psychologists have been directed on this particular issue, leading to evidence both for and against this claim. This is an issue which parents should acknowledge, as it greatly impacts their children. Therefore, parents must become aware of the issue of violence in video games and monitor their children’s access to such games because history as well as numerous studies and statistics to have shown that they have negative effects on children, causing desensitization due to the exposure to such intense images.
Although violent video games are thought to encourage real world violence, they actually help to prevent it. I am focusing on violent video games and how they affect juveniles because I feel that this issue needs to be looked at in the criminal justice community. It is an unnecessary distraction to blame the actions of a disturbed youth on a form of entertainment that has been used by millions of people without incident. A review article published in The Psychiatric Quarterly found that many studies which claim to indicate an increase in aggression due to video games are, in fact, biased! Once the bias is taken into account, the studies no longer find any correlation between youths who play violent video games and youths who demonstate aggression and violent behavior. (Ferguson, 2014)
There is no doubt that the media can spin a story into a shocking and scary account produced solely with the intent to sell. This information, force-fed to the public, can cause fear and hatred to develop within our country and result in gun violence and bloodshed. One reason for the amount of youth violence in America is the violent content in many video games. The average adolescent spends a major part of the normal week watching or interacting with some form of the media’s products. Video games are one of these media-based mediums and have become increasingly popular since the 1980’s.

Violence in video games is not a new issue. It has been debated and argued since the release of the first violent video game. As time has progressed, so has the evolution of violence and strong language within video games. Ratings have become more relaxed, and the lines between T (Teen) and M (Mature) rated games has gotten closer together. Violent games are becoming the normal and accepted of all games, and are being demanded by the gaming industry more heavily. Parents have always shied away from these games for their children, regardless of age. However, kids are getting these games whether they are the correct age (17+) or not. Young kids, less than ten years of age are playing horribly violent games and parents are fearing the repercussions. But video games are not to be blamed for child violence. Violence in video games does not cause children to become violent people later on in life.
In almost all video games, there are weapons of some sort. Even Lego brand video games feature weapons and a large amount of killing. Many children and teens accept this violence because their characters regenerate when killed. Christopher Bartlett, a psychologist at Iowa State University, led a research team made up of 47 undergraduates. Bartlett had a group of students play “Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance” for 15 minutes. Then, the students had to dole out hot sauce to a fellow student who did not like spicy food, but had to swallow the sauce. Compared to a group of students who had played a nonviolent video game, those who had played “Mortal Kombat” gave their fellow classmate much larger amounts of hot sauce (Carrey). More than 3,500 studies have shown the close relationship between video games and violent behavior. All but 18 studies have proved this to be true. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), violence that is shown without suffering is more likely to mimic violent behavior because the violence is, in a sense, meaningless (Eakes)...

If parents allow their kids to play violent video games, then they will be more influenced to think that hurting people is okay. Kids should not have to express their anger through these kinds of games, because if they do, they could end up making more poor decisions later on in life. I think kids should not play these games unless you want your child to be suspended from school for beating up another kid or worse, in prison for slaughtering several people.
