The apple does not fall far from the tree. At least that is what has been said for a long time. For some time now, a child has been considered to be a depiction of their parents, but it is never really explained why. There are many possible reasons for why that has become a theory. In many cases a child is exposed to their parents for most of their life and therefore acquire many of their similar traits, one of which includes their self identity. There are many factors that contribute to the development of an adolescent’s identity, one of the most crucial factors being the influence of their parents. One of them being democratic parenting, which includes those parents who take charge of their children’s needs, they encourage them and also respects their own opinions and hears them out. Democratic parents, cooperate with their children and although they set boundaries they are comprehensive and take their child’s feelings into consideration when establishing rules. In contrast, authoritarian parents are those parents who don’t show much care nor pay much attention to their child. They set rules and requires obedience without considerate of the child’s emotional needs. Finally, permissive parents tend to be supporting and encouraging, maybe in an excessive manner. They don’t have any control over their child and let tolerate their behavior even when it is unacceptable (Ragelienė and Justickis 27). In Andrew Solomon’s, Far from a Tree, the author explains the identity of children and why it can be difficult for parents to understand their child. A child is passed on different physical traits because of genetics. When a parent looks at their child, Solomon states the parents, “often see themselves,” and will surround the child with the type of environment they prefer. However, even though the child is raised in an environment chosen by the parents, their emotional identity branches out and the child grows to be independent. Solomon describes how the relationship between the parent and the child may at times be difficult when the parent is unable to understand their child.
Mothers and fathers have the potential to provide their offspring with powerful, enduring models of behavior, and exert a continuing influence on the reactions and decisions which will shape their children’s’ lives. It is evident that this can be the case even in the absence of the parent. The mother or father who has died or moved away from the family home does not thereby become absent from the child’s memory, and does not thereby cease to guide the child’s behavior. These truths are illustrated by two books which deal with problems faced by adolescents, and which offer contrasting accounts of parental influence – in one case almost wholly negative; in the other case strongly positive, although not necessarily leading to good solutions to the difficulties confronted.
The authoritarian style of parenting is control focused and militaristic in approach. This parent has high expectations and demands strict obedience. They often rule by fear and punishment. Dr. Gwen Dewar states, “… Little nurturing, lots of psychological control” (Dewar). On Consistant-parenting-advice.com the author communicates this type of parenting can result in abusive discipline that can be emotional and physical; however this writer is also including verbal abuse to the list.
It is usual that a child would be raised by both of his biological parents. However, some kids are raised by only one of their biological parents or none. There are many reasons for a child not being raised by their biological parents. Might be because the child’s parent might have passed away, or the child’s parent supposedly just left their child for other people, for urgent reasons. In my opinion, I think that a parent shouldn’t just leave their child for someone else whatever the reason was, because it would affect the child in many ways especially when they grows up. The purpose of this essay is to mention the negative effects on teens who don’t their biological parents.
The first type of parenting style is called authoritarian. In this parenting style the parents are the boss. They make strict rules and they enforce them. They focus more on restrictions than a loving relationship with their child. They believe it is their job as parents to catch their children being bad and punish them. These parents use external control on their children instead of taking time to tell the kid what they did wrong and why they should not do it again. Something these parents do not realize is that they do not catch their kids being good. Authoritarian parents are firm and unsympathetic. Authoritarian parents love to use discipline.

The influences exerted on a developing child derives, socially, from the behavior exhibited by a parental figure in the child’s life such as a mother or father. An adolescent’s morals and identity are heavily influenced by the certain behaviors instilled in them. A sense of right and wrong and belonging emerges from their role models and the certain expectations and values bestowed upon them. Early social concepts are observed and learned from parents.
