The individual in which I chose was Ted Bundy, also known as Theodore Robert Bundy. Ted Bundy, born Theodore Robert Cowell, was considered the most notorious serial killer in the country. He would ultimately be convicted of the crime of murder, rape and kidnapping of 30 female victims. Ted Bundy’s killing spree lasted, 10 years from the start until he was finally apprehended in Florida. Although Ted Bundy had confessed to approximately 30 murders, there are conflicting reports stating an amount ranging from 30 to 120.
Ted Bundy went to trial in June 1979 and on July 24, 1979, he was sentenced to death for the murder of more than thirty women. Many people acquainted with him stated he was intelligent and intellectual, but most of all conning. Ted Bundy was administered a psychiatric examination by Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis. Dr. Lewis diagnosed Bundy with Bipolar Disorder but later change her diagnosis after several sessions with him later noting the possibility of Multiple Personality Disorder. Other experts considered both diagnoses as faulty and elusive because of the behavior he exhibited during the trial.
Ted Bundy was later given the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder, many patients with this diagnosis exhibit traits of sociopaths or psychopaths. Ted Bundy when allowed to lead his sessions always gave the indication that the victim was the wrongdoer and deserved to be killed. All clinicians did agree upon one thing and that was the normalcy that Bundy placed on the murders he had committed. Ted Bundy was considered by law enforcement and psychiatrist to be a master manipulator in addition to being a dangerous person.
