Currently, technology has been on the rise, and many places are integrating electronics into their everyday lives for ease of access and efficiency. Electronics like laptops and tablets help college students with their studies. College students use laptops and tablets in their class for a better efficiency during class. East Asian countries are getting their students iPads and “every student in the school will have one” (Wang), by 2013, and only “1 in 10 schools allow their students laptops” (Wang). Asian schools are “ahead in the game” (Wang), compared to the United States. All high schools in the United States should allow the use of laptops and tablets in their classes because of their portability, applications, and communication. Tablets and laptops are quite portable and easy to carry. Instead of a student carrying a large amount of books, writing utensils, and notebooks, one could carry a laptop or tablet and make “fat school bars full of heavy books, pens and notepads a thing of the past” (Wang). Instead of stuffing a book bag full of books, one can slip a laptop or tablet “into a bag and store thousands of textbooks” (Wang). It is true that the more electronics one carry, there are more wires in the bag, but my point is that cables usually weigh less than textbooks, and that there is still a limit on how many wires one needs. Many high schools do not allow tablets and laptops in class, and many people carry backpacks. Heavy backpacks can “lead to both back pain and poor posture” (Longley). Since many parents and teachers complain about their children’s postures, tablets and laptops should replace the weight of books and potentially help the children’s backs. With the United States’ low amount of high schools allowing laptops and tablets in school, the high schools should allow laptops and tablets to be used to benefit students, because the “trend of integrating technology into education will definitely increase” (Wang). I am a high school student, and in the classes that I am allowed my laptop and tablet, I feel like it has helped me more than not having one. Technology can disrupt people’s train of thought. To begin with, many people around the world use technology. Electronics can help students and also affect them in many ways, but whether or not shutting down all electronics can help. Schools should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because of many reasons.
I was surprised to learn that students from both the U.S. and abroad agreed that American schools had more technology. I think of Japan and Hong Kong as being very technologically advanced and did not expect to have more than them. Ripley reports that “the United States invests more heavily in technology in classrooms than even high-performing countries.” This result opens an interesting debate of whether technology advances student learning. In my high school, we had a one-for-one policy, meaning each student in grades 9-12 received a district-owned laptop. The laptops did indeed increase student learning, but for reasons other than what the school board wants to think. The laptops provided every student with a means to complete their homework. There were no more excuses of “My printer broke!” or “My Wi-Fi connection was down!” Each student was expected to download the assignment while at school, where the Wi-Fi was guaranteed. Then, the work could be completed at home and turned in during the next class session. The laptops provided accountability for all the students, but did not ‘enhance classroom lessons’, as was the intention. The school board liked to believe that the technology would increase interactivity in classrooms and open new doors for learning, but that interactivity that was discussed in board meetings was nonexistent in practicality. In her article “In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom”, Rebecca Schuman, an education columnist for “Slate”, deals with the issue of having laptops in the classroom. Schuman believes that the rigid enforcement of the no-laptop rule infantilizes students and it is the students’ responsibility to be disciplined enough to not misuse the laptops in class, thus her views that laptops should be allowed in the classroom. Furthermore, they can be used to make learning more effective. While Schuman presents valid arguments for her stand, they are not persuasive for they lack concrete evidences and contain many assumptions.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life, whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful.
Michael J. Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and author of“Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, states that the initial purpose of having access to the Internet in the classroom was to give students the opportunity to conduct research. However, this privilege is rapidly being used as a means for students to not pay attention during class. A poll was taken at Iowa State University where 20,247 out of the 25,741 enrollees were registered on Facebook (Bugeja 1). Social networking sites such as Facebook have had some negative effects in academia such as “institutions seeking to build enrollment learn that ‘technology’ rates higher than ‘rigor’ or ‘reputation’” (2), that there has been improper use of the freedom to use technology in the classroom, that employers and parents check Facebook to see what users have been doing, and that technology is an overall distraction in the classroom.

With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Our world is changing gradually bringing these changes into people’s daily life styles; consequently, a person’s potential to embrace these challenges and revolutionize with them has become an important factor to analyze people’s way to prepare themselves for the future. According to Gilbert Valdez, educational technology, especially computers and computer-related peripherals, have grown tremendously and have permeated all areas of our lives. It is incomprehensible that anyone today would argue that banks, hospitals, or any industry should use less technology. Most young people cannot understand arguments that schools should limit technology use. For them, use of the Internet, for example, plays a major role in their relationships with their friends, their families, and their schools. Teens and their parents generally think that use of the Internet enhances the social life and academic work of teenagers. Nonetheless, not all people has the possibility of changing towards a technological society due to the lack of personal progress through technology, and the misunderstanding of this tool is leading future professionals to become technologically dependant; in other words to rely only on technology without considering the possible consequences that it might have on future professionals development and their educational background. The overuse of educational technology has been growing over the recent years due to the emergent technological developments around the world; however, it can be solved by searching for a new balance between the uses of technology within education.

Students today use all types of electronic devices to do the unimaginable. The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
There is no doubt that technology has changed the world in which we live. The world has been transformed with new advances in technology. This is why it is so important to educate elementary students on technology education. The use of technology in education provides students with technology literacy, information literacy, capacity for life-long learning and other skills necessary for the 21st century workplace.
