The current generation of children is completely different than the preceding ones. They are living in the digital age. “Technology has blended in with daily activity to become a way of life and children today take for granted all of which is automated. Children, tomorrow’s future parents and leaders, are being consumed by the negative effects that technology had on their development (3). The use of modern technology impairs children by weakening social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

Technology affects social development in children in many different ways. Children acquire electronic games, personal computers, and cell phones at ever-younger ages. “Surveys indicate that about 82% of children are online by 7th grade and experience about 6.5 hours per day of media exposure. Most children communicate more through electronic devices and spend less face time with family members and peers. Text messaging and emails provide limited of no access to other people’s emotions, and the rich language of non verbal communication that in real-time interactions is lost. The quality of family time is compromised if children are using technology. The family would not be able to talk very much during dinner time because of distractions like watching television, listening to music, checking email, answering the phone, and text messaging (7).

Using the internet as an easy shortcut for things lacks the experiences that children need to develop correctly. There must be a balance of internet and the real life, hard copy form of things for people to really form independent ideas and feelings based on the vast experiences of going to a concert or reading a heavy, worn out, and loved book under a tree that the online version cannot provide. It is experiences like these that help develop motor and sensory skills that are crucial to child development. According to Cris Rowan, the author of “The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child,” the “four critical factors necessary to achieve healthy child development are movement, touch, human connection, and exposure to nature. These types of sensory inputs ensure normal development of posture, bilateral coordination, optimal arousal states and self-regulation necessary for achieving foundation skills” (Rowan). In other words, too much time spent on digital devices instead of playing outside and interacting face-to-face with people can cause some detrimental developmental issues that would affect someone's quality of life. Although technology advancements have created the biggest storage database ever and a world wide web of information and resources, like digital books, that overall improve how society functions, it is still essential for young children to have the experiences that do not involve a screen so that they can develop into healthy young adults who have a understanding of the world, empathy, and their self. Despite the many benefits of computers, there are also a number of arguments against them which I strongly believe should be fully assessed. Today our youth ranging from ages seven to eighteen are indirectly suffering as a result of technology. Gone are the days of outdoor sports and physical group activities. Children are now using some form of technology every hour of their lives and are isolated from the world. Isolation and addiction occurs when children spend hours on the computer and internet, away from their family and peers. “They will often lose all track of time and will stay up all night to be at the computer with little or no sleep.” (Carter, Jerome). Nowadays, kids think they know much about the technology and some kids even think that they know much more than their parents. Most of the parents, these days, also let their kids use the technology unchecked. This carefree attitude towards technology by both parents and kids may lead to a world without safety. As we see the same issues brought forward by Ray Bradbury in his short story, “The Veldt”.
Studies have stated that technology has made a major impact on families and the amount of time they spent together; parents have spent more time surfing through the Interweb while the children spent time chatting with their peers and that result in the formation of a wall between the parent and their child. The Veldt proves this statement by showing the kids and their parents separate from each other. When the parents were sleeping in their self-rocking bed, the kids spent their time in the nursery room imagining possible ways they could kill their parents. In fact, the two children, Peter and Wendy Hadley, both spent an endless amount of time in the nursery and not even chat with the parents as much as they would if they had no nursery. The article “Is Technology Creating a Family Divide” elaborates on this topic by saying that extracurricular activities, busyness, unimaginable workloads, and much more can create a little reduction in family quality time, but if you add technology, matters get much worse.

They can understand the world and connect with it better in this way. While owning different devices and interesting gadgets, children who use these things too early also lose something in return. Because of the time they spend indoors with their devices, they lack exercise.
Many people have a wide range of opinions on whether technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that have the greatest effect on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two.
