Technology has become a pivotal factor in human history. It has helped build and develop the modern society we see today. However, the more recent and advanced technology is becoming, it is also making a change for the worst as well. Ray Bradbury is trying to show us that technology can consume a human beings life. This home, comes equipped with a nursery that is an entertainment room with sensory technology that allows the room to create any environment around them as they wish. When the parents initially go into the room it is set to “African Veldt”, surrounding them around grasslands with lions and gazelles. Throughout the story however, the parents become concerned with the use of the technology in this room, because their children have used its environment to express their hostility and emotions against them. Children nowadays spend a lot of their time using entertainment technology instead of being physically active as a lot of people would remember doing as a child. From the article, “The Impact of technology on the developing child” by Cris Rowan, he says “Juggling school, work, home, and community lives, parents now rely heavily on communication, information, and transportation technology to make their lives faster and more efficient.” This means, that these devices become a large part of people's lives, due to their efficiency and reliability. Parents are heavy users of entertainment technology, which is the reason why children also use it so heavily. Rowan says, “Technology’s impact on the 21st century family is fracturing its very foundation, and causing a disintegration of core values that long ago were the fabric that held families together.” Normal family things such as going out for a bike ride together or going to the park is less common due to the use of entertainment technology by members in the family. Ray Bradbury states “We bombard people with sensation. That substitutes for the thinking.” I agree with this statement because with all the technology and entertainment the 21st century offers where has the thinking and investigating gone? In his book Fahrenheit 451, his words manifest a horrible time where important writings from philosophers, playwrights, and authors are censored and almost everyone is solely focused on all the mind-numbing technology around them. In another article titled, “Study explores how Internet, technology affect young people” by Michael Abernethy, a survey explores how these machines could affect the future generations in negative way by being raised in their presence. I understand that technology is helpful and makes life a lot easier but becoming too reliant on it will weaken the ability to think freely and stopping us from seeing the real meaning in knowledge.
Have you ever felt that in spite of being continually connected to your family by cell phone, you rarely talk to them? Ray Bradbury tackled the topic of technology in his short story, The Veldt. Over the course of the story, we see a family’s life disintegrate due to the technology in their Happylife Home. Through plot, the voice of his characters and in his choice of literary devices Bradbury delivers his point of view that technology is a divisive force in a family dynamic.
"The Veldt" is a glimpse into the imminent future. This story sets the scene in a “Happy House”, a revolutionary wonder in technology. This house cooks, cleans, comforts and will even bathe the owner. Such an incredible advancement can not possibly be bad, or so the family originally thinks. This house includes a nursery, a room in which the thoughts of children become a virtual reality on the walls. This incredible sensory experience feels almost too real as the parents soon discover in a visit to the room. Displayed on the walls is a scene from an African Veldt complete with a scorching sun and ferocious lions which seem to feast on some unlucky prey. The images terrify the parents and they seek the immediate help of a psychologist who implores them to shut down the house. In a household, one would expect essential technology such as: an oven, a refrigerator, a microwave, etc. For this family, they have a nursery that brings the children’s imagination to life. The author describes, “The walls were blank and two dimensional. Now, as George and Lydia Hadley stood in the center of the room, the walls began to purr and recede in crystalline distance, it seemed, a presently an African veldt appeared...” (Ray Bradbury). Kids using cell phones and other tablets are becoming more and more distant from their parents, for the simple fact that the Kids are on the tablets/phones more often than they are with their parents, and as a child you need to bond with your parents and not a tablet/phone.
