When most people think about this question, they would say in a matter of fact tone, “Well of course, we have advanced so much as a species”, shuddering at the thought of a life without Facebook, Gmail, and light emitting screens. Well, certainly, we have come a long way from the 1800’s, developing all sorts of medicine, technology, and cultures that the people “way back then” would have never even dreamed of. And sure enough, it is very hard for us modern homo-sapiens to think about life without any electricity or machinery, everything from heating to washing to building having to be done by yourself. However, even though we can’t deny the fact of our vast technological advances over the last 2 centuries, did all of these things happen for …show more content…
Children back then had more injuries because the early settlers, including the children, in British North America had to work very hard to build a community, which meant that by the time they were 14, pioneer children had already been working full days in the field or at home. which is a lot more physical work compared to the children in Canada today, that at most do half an hour of chores a day. Although many would say this is good exercise, the consequences to working a full day in the fields far outweigh the benefits. Many boys could become ill or injured from working in the fields, and even girls could become hurt by working in the garden or feeding the livestock. Injuries at such an important age could be very harmful, possibly causing many children to have lifelong disabilities or diseases. Moreover, the children of Canada today have much better nutrition. We have food all around the world that is tested and checked for all the possible safety concerns. In the …show more content…
Are children happier now, or in the 1800’s? Although there is certainly more “entertainment” now, as we have TV, the radio, and wifi, compared to newspapers in the 1800’s, are the children of Canada really enjoying life more than the people 200 years ago? I don’t think so, because I believe that the real joy in life comes from interacting with other humans. Today, even though we have many “social” media sites that allows us to be “social” with others even when we’re completely alone. Although they have become more advanced, allowing us to hear their voices, look at their pictures and have conversations, the “real” time spent with our friends and family is very limited. We’d rather be staring at pictures of them on instagram instead of having a conversation in real life. However, in the 1800’s this wasn’t true, because their only entertainment came in the form of newspapers. According to the textbook, their favourite pastime was visiting friends and family, and having real conversations, and making memories, instead of commenting on their face on facebook, Also, pioneer children loved to attend religious events on Sundays, because they liked to socialize with other children. Once again, they’re enjoying themselves with their friends while we are staring fixedly at a screen. In conclusion, settler children were definitely happier than our children in Canada today because they were able to surround
During the late 1800’s, there was a time of great change. This was near the end of the industrial revolution in America. Some of the greatest inventions were invented during this time. We still use most of the inventions today, they are just modified to fit the needs of America today. 3 of the major inventions and innovations that came out of this time were the telephone, typewriter, and the incandescent light bulb.
The childhood of the past has changed through many eras of time. The labor work of children is not needed in a great deal no more. The 1800s was a time of labor for children. Families would have more children than now, because without a child many families could not survive. Children were needed to bring home money and feed the family. The girls were used to do the chores around the house, while the boys were used to do outside work, like cut wood. Children were influenced to do labor. They would not believe in an education, both rural and urban children. Through the industrialization children started working in family farms or in small workshops. Boys and girls would find work at mines or large factories. Children were seen as the important economic survivals to their families. By the 1890s, Canada ...
The Gilded Age was the spark of technical innovations and advance in America. Railroads, steel, kerosene, light bulbs, ac/dc electrical lighting, etc., were all innovations that lead to technical advances. Inventors or businessmen helped take the Gilded Age to the peek. Men impacted their time by creating theories, efficient innovations, faster transportation. Each idea was a step into the right direction.
From 1865 to 1900, technology transformed the United States during the period known as the Gilded Age. During this time, the lives of the American people ultimately changed, for many Americans, including farmers, were able to share better food, yield more land, and help contribute to the overall standard of living. However, in order to attain a profit, farmers had the precarious responsibility of gathering the essential tools and crops to meet the nation’s demands. As a result, more raw materials, such as wood were being consumed in factories. In order to uphold the continuum of the vast growing nation, there was a demand for faster and easier means of transportation. Additionally, many foreigners sought America to be a very superior and prosperous land. The foreigners were men and women from various nations, also known as the Go-Getters, found new ways of living and vast amount of opportunities. Coined by Mark Twain, the Gilded Age became a symbol of America, as it expressed a false image of prosperity from the outside, but truly held an underlying corrupt background. Technology transformed the United States during the Gilded Age by the changing of American labor force, benefits of new inventions, developments in communication and transportation, and through great hardship and wealth.

The answer is, no one really knows; however, the inventions and ideas that were brought about in the 1920's are things that are used more than ever today. With the technological advancements made in the 1920's, the invention of the radio, television, automobile, and other minor advancements made the 1920's one of the most important decades of the 1900's.
Living in the 1800’s may not have been a piece of cake for some, but after all people were very happy with this life choice because of all of the opportunities and the thrill of being in the unknown. The radio revolutionised the way families spent time together and receive information. The movie theaters had an impact on how people forgot about the depression and made life seem better. Labor saving appliances of the 1920s made the household chores easy to accomplish than it used to be. The 1920s was enriched by many technological achievements that helped changed the way americans communicated, managed their health, and partook in leisurely activities.
Industrial Development in the Nineteenth Century There was a great deal of industrial development and change throughout the nineteenth century. It was a very wealthy era with many rich people and England was a prosperous country. For the poor people in England, the nineteenth century was a terrible time. If you were redundant you would probably starve to death. The novel "A Christmas carol" by Charles Dickens shows what life was truly like for the normal, poor people.
The growth of industry in the 19th century affected Americans in various ways. Cities grew and developed rapidly, women began to work outside of their homes and farmers felt the impact as rural living developed. Each aspect of American society felt the change in either a positive or negative way. Our country was changing because of industrialization.
Through out the 1920’s many inventions were created that altered human civilization. Transportation was successfully mastered. Radio communication was becoming more common and medicine was saving more and more lives every day.
“… and yet a true creator is necessity, which is the mother of invention.” (Plato 390c). It’s this ‘need’ that fueled are inventions and innovations to reduce the difficulty of all those scenarios deemed impossible. Over the centuries, mankind has progressed by leaps and bound. Starting from being cavemen who hunted animals by sticks and stones to survive, mankind is now able to live luxurious life with well-built homes, stable food and water supply and efficient communication and travel methods. Just picturing the Stone Age and our current lives side by side will make us realize how technology has changed our society. It has changed how we produce our food, communicate with others and how we travel.
The standard 21 year old adults have exchanged 250 thousand emails, spent 5 thousand hours video gaming and 10 thousand hours using their mobile devices (Lei, 2009). When people hear the word technology, they think of microwaves, televisions, cars, NASA, different types and transportation and more. For all that, technology has occurred long ahead these discoveries. Technology is an arguable matter amongst people. .In the old days, people lived an extremely simple life without technology. They used candles to light their houses and lanterns at the dark to travel, they used fire to cook and used newspapers and mail to share news. On the other hand, technology has seized an important place in our society. People are living in a stage of progressive technology. They are using all natural reserves applicable for making their lives better and easier. The society cannot picture life without electricity since it allows them to live through their everyday life. This paper argues that technology positively impacts people’s lives.
Technology now literally controls the world and what goes on. The economy is dependent on the use of technology, but there are minor creation that don’t really have a use at all and can be done without it. So again my opinion is that technology is need in life, but at times it isn’t that use. Things that can be done by technology can sometimes be done by without it.
Albert Einstein once said, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” This quote is fully representative of society today. It has distracted us from..... One second my best friend just texted me… Ok what was I saying?.. Oh right; It has distracted us from our studies, our loved ones, and even our driving. Technology is making us less intelligent, oblivious to our surroundings, and antisocial.
Technology is making our lives easier than ever, but are we getting too dependent on it? Technology is improving over the past decades. It has become a part and parcel of everyday life. Without it, people would have a lot of trouble keeping pace with the whole world. At the same time, todays new generations are incredibly dependent on it.
