How Technology Leads to Social Isolation Humans use technology almost everyday, and it can used in many ways that can either help or hurt them. Many people may view technology as a life-saver because it helps us with so many things that improve our daily lives, but what people don’t see are the contrary and injurious effects technology has on their lives. Although technology helps us in our everyday lives, it can lead to social isolation because it kills conversation, it isolates people from others, and it increases the risk for psychological health concerns. “Those endless phone calls or texting also completely isolate you from the people around you. You don’t bother with them; you are ‘connected’ to a whole different group of people. This is part of why Americans are no longer listening to each other and are surrounding themselves with people who think just as they do” (VROON 54). Cars are a great example of a major isolating object in today’s society. Usually when people are in the car together they don’t communicate with each other, it’s just silent the whole time. If someone is a “car person” they usually don’t see or think things the same way others do (VROON 54). Any kind of technology that can be used will most likely result in isolation. “[A]t times I have chosen to avoid email and social media, and then again chosen to participate. It is often a choice between connection or isolation” (Bonady 44). Many people might actually be aware that technology is isolating them because, they know that they could be out doing more important things rather than to be on their phones. More and more people have chosen to stay indoors because the longer they are inside watching television, or being on their phones, they are distancing themselves from communities and human interaction (Morrow 338). People who are not involved with using technology may feel isolated from people who do because, there is almost no way for them to communicate, the person who uses technology is always distracted by their cell phone that they don’t care to have a real-life conversation. Non-technology users then decide to start using phones, computers, etc just so they don’t lose touch with people although, they know it will affect their lives.
