That is the end of my five weeks course on technical writing. I am here writing my reflection on the experiences that I have learned from technical communication class.
When I knew that I have to take a class in technical communication, I wondered “what will I learn from it?” “How am I going to use those skills?” and “What is really technical writing?” I thought “it is just another writing class, and the difference is my writing focuses on dealing with technical issues.” But as soon as I pick up the book and read I learned that technical communication is totally a different world that I haven’t expected. I started to realize that this class is crucial to my career and me. It will decide whether or not I can sustain in my career path as a professional nurse.

Working on the assignments about writing those technical documents, I have learned the framework of what they look like and how to learn and improve those skills. One significant improvement is my writing skills started to cling to a more professional version. Before I took the technical writing class, I only write the essay to express my idea or to prove and argue for something. And most of the time I wrote with and I – centered rather than an audience – centered mind. Then technical writing has changed that I – centered writing habit of mine. Overall, my writing has significantly improved on every aspect, but I have to practice, review and revise these skills more and more to make it a good habit for
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.

Even though the majority of hospitals and health care facilities are computerized, the charge nurse has to communicate with a multitude of health care professionals during every shift. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
In nursing practice, communication is essential, and good communication skills are paramount in the development of a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. Perhaps the foremost ethical question that presents itself to technical writers revolves around the question “What makes a piece of writing acceptable to one’s audience?” On the surface, this is a seemingly uncomplicated thought. Unfortunately, however, it is one that few professional writers attempt to answer. This question can be approached by remembering that the ultimate goal of any form of writing is to spark an interest in the reader that will cause she or he to want to follow the writer’s thoughts to the end of the work. One way to ensure that the audience will remain attentive is to refrain from offending those who have expressed a desire to read your words. This issue is largely a matter of ethics and one that can harm or assist one’s career in technical writing. Alienation of one’s audience defeats the purpose of the work that accompanied the research and writing of the text in the first place. If technical writers simply exercise empathy and remember a few ethical and commonsensical ideas, they will find themselves far more successful in their chosen field.
As a business major student, I have learned the importance of writing and the essentials needed to communicate effectively. BA 105W is a course that has benefitted me significantly because now I have a better understanding of the different types of writings that a business utilizes. Professor Eaton focused on specific areas of the book that would assist us to have a professional writing assignment completed by the specified date. Ms. Eaton tried her best to assist us whenever we were unsure of what exactly she was expecting on an assignment. Considering the valuable information that professor Eaton provided us through out the semester, I will specifically be focusing on the importance of proofreading, journals, and good will messages.
As this course in writing, for public administrators, comes to its conclusion, I have read provided materials, researched additional references and written various journal entries and analysis papers on topics that included writing skills and real world communications. The writing skill assignments provided the most interesting points but surprisingly, it was simple proof reading that proved the skill I need to spend more time mastering. This self-assessment will focus on the improvements I have made, points I have found interesting and the goals I have set to continue to improve my writing and communication skills.
So I began this class. When asking myself about taking Technical Writing, I just saw it as the "easy way out." Which can be seen in my earlier work in the class. Now as we come to the close of this semester I see it as a brand new learning experience. This class has taught me about proper writing and how to draft up ideas when I need to convey them more properly. This class taught me to look at my skills and find out my writing weaknesses and strengths. Which at first glance I thought I was pretty good at writing to begin with, but now I feel more confident in my ability to write an essay and other technical documents. With the task we faced in this class I learned more about who I was and how I write, which lead to a well versed writer in me. During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. As mentioned countless times above, during my time in this class, I would love to obtain the writing skill of writing papers that are more condensed and attentive to the matter I am addressing at that point in time. Professionals and even non-professionals will not want to waste their time reading something that could have been addressed in a fewer sentences and words. If I want to stand out in a crowd of equally educated occupational therapists, I need to make sure my writing is formatted and addressed in a professional manner. As a result, I am looking forward to learning how to make myself look as professional as I can in writing. Nevertheless, with learning to write proper papers and documents comes the challenge of making sure enough time is included within my study of this particular course.
