The maze runner by James Dashner is about a group of teen boys who are racing against the clock to solve a seemingly impossible maze, at the same time trying to stay alive while trying to uncover their past. As the plot develops, friendships are tested to the maximum. Their fight until the end proves that, with teamwork you can accomplish anything and it is always better to work together.
This theme is shown throughout the book for instance when Thomas went out into the maze to find Minho and Alby while knowingly breaking the number one rule in the Glade (109). He sacrificed his own reputation and safety to help his friends. Once inside the maze, Thomas is Minho rejects his help by saying “And what good are you with us?” [Break the number one rule, kill yourself] (113), after realizing that if they don’t do anything all three of them would have no chance of surviving. Thomas came up with the idea to string Alby on the maze walls with vine, which saved his life. “Using the same method of pushing each of Alby’s arms and legs up two or three”feet at a time, Thomas slowly made his way up...
A strong teamwork is built when the team members ameliorate each other’s weaknesses with their strengths. In Rodman Philbrick’s Freak the Mighty, Maxwell Kane and Kevin Avery work together as a team, mitigating one another’s shortcomings and making friends in the process. Max and Kevin’s symbiotic relationship helps the boys socially, brings their good out into the world, and morphs them into a bionic body that makes up for the other’s flaws.
In the book Boys In the Boat, Daniel Brown tells the story of the U.S.’s rowing team’s Olympic journey to gold in 1936. The games were held in Berlin, right under Hitler’s eye. Though the games were held in Berlin that didn’t stop Joe Rantz, the book’s main character, and his team from going for gold. The boys had to show perseverance and teamwork to even be able to row. From country boys, to gold medal winners, rowing and hardships helped them embody the American spirit of hard work and teamwork. The boys had to overcome hardships, to work hard, and they never stopped being a team in order to win gold in Berlin.
For instance, when the people of the Glade discover that Ben got stung by a Griever, they immediately bring him to the entrance of the maze with bad intentions: Ben cries, “Please don’t! Please don’t do this!” (Ball) The boys began to use long sticks to usher Ben into the maze while it closes, intending to trap him in there. Under those circumstances, Chuck looked very disappointed and so ashamed that he walked away from what was happening. This practice displayed the savagery that goes on inside the Glade and how Chuck doesn’t believe that what the boys did was morally right. Furthermore, upon Teresa’s arrival, came the antidote to “the changing” (Ball). When a Griever stung Alby, Thomas used this cure on him in hopes to save him from the infection. Had the Gladers not jump into such ruthless actions so quickly, Ben would still be alive. To emphasize, Chuck also paid a visit to Thomas in the pit: “It’s just me, you’ll run better on a full stomach.” (Ball) Chuck’s concern for Thomas’s well-being supports his innocence because nobody else cared to bring Thomas food. Chuck acts like a brother figure to Thomas and these bonds need to grow throughout the community. Creating positive relationships in which the Gladers only support and help each other, is the only way out of the maze alive. If there is too much hostility between the members of the glade, not only
In The Maze Runner there are main different themes but I feel that hope is one of the bigger ones would be bravery. In the Maze Runner Thomas shows the most bravery out of everyone and he’s pretty much the newest member. Many times throughout the story Thomas goes into dangerous situations to help others even if that means risking his own life. One of the forms of bravery in The Maze Runner is when Thomas saw Alby and Minho coming to the walls of the maze as it was closing and knew that they wouldn’t make it in time so he ran in even though he was risking his life “Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze. The walls slammed shut behind him, the echo of
Anyone as brave as Thomas does not sit back and relax to watch one of his injured friends from being trapped outside as it is about to hit night time. An injured person outside of their safe haven almost equals imminent death. Thomas instinctively ran to his injured comrade in order to save him, to only find out that he himself is also trapped outside of the Glades. "For several seconds, Thomas felt like the world had frozen in place. A thick silence followed the thunderous rumble of the Door closing, and a ...
It was cold, dark, and he had no idea what was going on all he can remember partially of his name. He had started hearing conspicuous noises. He then looked at the sides of the chained wall. He saw this terrifying creature, then jolted back as soon as he saw it. Everything had just stopped and the top of the room opened up. This guy had then jumped down and brought him up and said, “Day one greenie.” As soon as he got up he started to run. But after 5-10 seconds he then fell. The guy who brought him up told him, “As long as you’re here you’ll never run again.”
James Dashner's The Maze Runner is a novel that portrays the life of specifically chosen teenagers, who live in a colossal sized maze. They are tested to escape the maze and find a cure for the disease which broke out during The Changing. The Gladers who are inside the maze illustrate the theme of bravery in the novel, especially Thomas, after his arrival at the Glade. Thomas has the courage to take risks, such as going into the Maze at night to save Minho and Alby. His bravery gives him the opportunity to open up to his talents and abilities which allow him and his friends to grow and discover the mysteries of the Maze and their past lives. When we think of bravery in the Glade, we only think of the physical bravery, but bravery is also the state of showing courageous behaviour or character. We first see this form of bravery from Thomas as illustrated."Somehow he knew he had to do it. It was such an odd thing to feel, especially after what he had just seen...'Now
The Maze Runner is a 2014 mystery/science fiction film that can be viewed from an archetypal perspective. An archetype can be described as a pattern that can and is copied and recurring symbols or characters. The concept of archetypes came from Carl Jung a psychiatrist who believed that all cultures use archetypes to build stories without communicating to each other about them. Two groups of archetypes are the character and symbolic archetypes. The film The Maze Runner should be analyzed through an archetypal perspective because it has character and symbolic archetypes.
Doomsday. Armageddon. 2012. The end of the world or the apocalypse is known by its many names and has become an extremely viral subject for this generation. But, imagine living in a world not playfully joking around about the apocalypse, but strategically trying to survive it. This is the harsh reality for Thomas, a teenager living in a virus polluted and self-destructing planet. A deadly disease has broken out called “the flare” which causes the most sane and rational people to become raging and hysterical flesh eaters. Not only has the virus taken the lives of millions, but the extreme climates have also killed the few remaining. In the novels The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, Thomas and his friends will have to fight to survive a world taken over by the sick and protect one other from those who say they want to help. The two novels share a touching story of young lives entwined during a difficult time and the lengths the characters go through in order to survive the apocalypse. The ultimate question within these novels is what is one willing to risk in order to survive? Within the novels The Death Cure and The Scorch Trials, Thomas is forced to fight for his survival on a daily basis, and in doing so he is constantly faced with either having to betray those closest to him, or remain the honest and true man he is, in order to survive. Within these novels, relationships are tested to such extremes that the repercussions of each survival based decision the characters make have the possibility of endangering the lives of those closest to them, but ultimately is a test to see who remains true to themselves and does not sell out their friends or themselves.
Hey you, Yeah… YOU! Would you want to live in a society where you live in a box for your entire life, and mean absolutely nothing to the just about anyone? For science right? NOPE! The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins with a teenage boy waking up in an elevator who has no memory of the past, only that his name is Thomas. When the doors of the elevator open up he is pulled into a humongous square surrounding, called the Glade, by a group of teenage boys. The boys in the Glade refer to themselves as the ‘Gladers’. Thomas learns that the Gladers have lived in there for two years and that the Glade is located in the center of a maze which contains a labyrinth of high walls that move during the night and deadly creatures called grievers. The Glade is led by two boys, Alby and Newt; they both maintain order in the Glade by enforcing strict rules and jobs that keep the Gladers busy. A day after Thomas’ arrival an unknown girl arrives in the Glade. This shocks everyone because the Gladers only receive a new person every month, never within the same week. This also shocks everyone because she was the only girl in a maze full of boys. The girl also gives a message that everything is going to change and that she is the last one ever. Right after her message she immediately falls into a coma. The arrival of the girl causes many things to go chaotic including the sun seizing to rise, the Gladers stop receiving supplies from the creators of the maze, and the doors of the Glade that protect the Gladers from the grievers at night stop closing. When the girl, Teresa wakes up she informs Thomas that they both knew each other in the past and that the maze was a code. Thomas and the people who run around the maze to map out the labyrinth, the runners, look through the archives of the maps and find out the code. Then the leader of the runners, Minho, figures out that the cliff they thought was just a cliff was actua...

Anger and frustration sets the tone of Thomas, for he wants his father to live and not give up on life. Additionally, Thomas is fearful on how he is dealing with his father’s inescapable demise. While men of differences men may learn too late, and lament their lack of foresight, even they “do not go gently into the night,” instead they “rage, rage against the dying of the light” (18, 19).
