The autonomy is one such behaviour of team which is the key characteristics of work team. The autonomy is characterized by motivation, mastery, and purpose. Combination of these three characters constitutes autonomy. Motivation “is the satisfaction of an individual derives from doing an activity”. There are two components in motivation, they are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivation is the inherent satisfaction an individual derives from doing an activity. These inherent satisfaction can be seen as team behaviour, which is related to intrinsic motivation. The other one is the meaningful work culture. As the sentence itself suggests that the work culture should be meaningful and the member of the team must also feel the same. A member can do so if the work is matching with the skills he possess, the task identity, and the team task significance. If all three or any one of the above is satisfied to the team member, then the team member feel meaning in his work, which will motivate the individual members to perform better. The extrinsic motivations people are motivated by the factors such as rewards, status, also punishments etc. when a member is said to be rewarded if he performs well. Also this may induce the individual as well team to perform well, this motivation may cause better workability of the team member. As a human tendency every person wants to achieve high status. He pushes into it if he gets a chance to achieve it. In a team if the individual knows that he will be promoted to higher level in hierarchy which is a matter of status, he performs well, which is an internal motivational factor. Which is a psychological
Once stated by Dwight D. Eisenhower, “Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.” The aforementioned ideology places an emphasis on an individual’s internal desires, rather than an outside/external force driving the individual’s consciousness (cognitive evaluation.) Therefore intrinsic motivation is one in which an individual 's own desire comes from within; a relentless and genuine passion for an intended goal. On the contrary, when an individual relies on external factors such as, a reward or any other form of external reinforcement, an extrinsic motivation is exhibited. Although society likes to stress the importance in pursuing an internal motivation, in today 's modern world, an extrinsic factor far outweighs an internal desire to accomplish an objective.
Motivation in the workplace can be inspired on the team level or individual level. Both of these levels can be determined through the primary factors, intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.
Teams are groups of people who work together to achieve a common goal (Learning Team Handbook, p 310). Workplace teams are increasing as businesses find the yield of team productivity and creativity exceeds individual productivity/creativity. To promulgate productive teams, businesses have had to identify common threads for successful teams. Businesses have identified the dynamics and needs of successful teams.
Overall company will find it extremely hard to succeed without the support of teams. Work group members will not only help each other improve their performance but also help improve the performance of the business. Teamwork allows them to learn to trust and respect each other; this will come in handy when the business is forced to deal with a loss of a team member or loss in revenue. Creating strong hard working teams will benefit a business in the short-run as well as in the long-run. That’s what business of the 21st century should strive for.
When we think of the word team, individually many different ideas may come to mind about what a team really is. Some may think of an NFL team (Tennessee Titans), an NBA team (Sacramento Kings), or a NASA astronaut team with such pioneers as Edwin Aldrin, Jr. and Neil Armstrong as members. You might even think of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, or Marines as teams. In fact they all are, and they have a great deal in common as teams. However, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the characteristics of work teams, as they apply to organizations and I will supply answers to the following questions: What is a team? Where did the team concept come from? What are the types of teams? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having teams in organizations? What does it take to make a team effective?
Teamwork is becoming more important in the work place, because of the leaders and the fact that it allows full participation with all employees. In order to complete several different tasks, managers and supervisors usually perform teams and assign different tasks to complete one major assignment. Team work starts at the top (Smikle, 2009). When supervisors or managers are willing to administer teamwork, they are enabling the employees to follow. Managers or supervisors set good examples when they delegate tasks, but more importantly express to the employees how teamwork is productive. Employees work by example, more so now than by demands.
Teamwork is one of the important component that is required in any types of business organization . Team is defines as “a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to the common purpose, performance goal, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable”(katzenbach and Smith 1993) . Teamwork offer numbers of advantages like in teamwork work are completed earlier because large task are divided into smaller projects and then it find out an individual who is best for doing the jobs. Tasks that are smaller in size also need less time and brainpower then the work is less sporting to the people who are working. Teamwork also helps in combing the unique skills of people and makes them work efficiently. In a teamwork strength of different people are combined for the benefit of entire team and to produce better product and teamwork also help in building the unity among the group member .In a teamwork relationship play an important role because it helps people to communicate properly with one another whereas friendship helps in creating a job satisfaction. Support system is also important because if support system will be stronger than people will be comfortably depend on each other. These are the advantage of the teamwork but in teamwork there are also disadvantage like in teamwork there is an uneven participation of the members because they depend on other for doing the majority of work this can lead to hatred in the workplace. In a teamwork everyone is not team player, as they cannot perform well while team is working because they want to do there own so they might face problems to get fitted in a certain work culture, which will result in displeasure. In teamwork there is less creativity among th...
Teams are important to a company simply because they motivate transformation and expansion. While teams play a key role in the expansion process of a business; the entire process can be delayed, if not disabled altogether due to a lack of participation on individual levels of commitment. Studies show that if a team is constructed and managed effectively they are 30-50% more productive. (Williams, 1995) Whatever the reason behind the formation of a team in a business it is always wise to take the proper approach to overcome any obstacle.
The above essay gives clear idea about the teamwork. There are different types of team in the organization, which is very essential for the business. The theories of belbin (1993), Tuckman and Jensen (1977) shows the nine teams role and five stages of development which are very important for any team building and also in belbin theory there is practical example of the company who used the nine team role and win the award and tuckman theory has been criticed by authors, and the example of teamwork given by Apple Inc. Ceo Steve jobs and Microsoft shows important of teamwork in their organization. Therefore I came to the conclusion that teamwork is a for the organization and very helpful in achieving the task on time.
Mullins (2002) also classifies motivation into Intrinsic and Extrinsic types. Intrinsic motivation involves psychological rewards to enhance job satisfaction, such as the opportunity to use one's ability, a sense of achievement, receiving appreciation and positive recognition or being treated in a considerate manner (Mullins, 2002:P490). Such methods ensure employees are constantly motivated while being engaged in activities that are enjoyable and rewarding.
The work community has several members, it is vital that these individuals act as a group, so that the common goal was achieved. This section describes the team, the team's importance, team building and why before-mentioned issues are important. The rapid progression and improvement in information and communication technology has led to modern organisation finding new ways to work. One of these innovation ways is using work group. More organisations are now becoming global than ever, which means they rely on distributed teams to carry out certain tasks (Nedelko, Z, 2007). Although now a days most jobs require a degree of individual and group work and it is left to the management to identify which method might be appropriate for the task (Belbin, M, 2007). In this essay I will be looking at how organisation can use work group to their advantage, and the different factors that can affect a work group’s performance. In addition, I will also be discussing when is it appropriate to use work group and individual, and discus whether an organisation can reply solely on work group to be for it to be successful.
In today’s workplace teamwork is an essential part of success. We have more and more business that are incorporating teamwork in some type of way. They are effectively implementing ways on how to create effective teams, teamwork and team building. They are also creating a work culture that values collaboration. According to Robert E. Quinn(p.205) there are two types of motivation (extrinsic and intrinsic). Extrinsic motivation refers to the source of motivation in which the behavior concern external factors such as money, praise or rewards. Whereas intrinsic motivation is the behavior which is internally concerning an individual.
