When reading "Teaching Thinking by Teaching Writing" by Peter Elbow, I discovered many of the ideas he favors is how I start off my writing for most writing assignments. I tend to free-write when getting out of my thoughts without being interrupted by any outsider looking in or sources to result to. Then once I 'm done, if the assignment requires sources or I just feel I need another opinion and feel I 've been looking for extra help such as needing sources to include within my writing. I feel my best writing comes from me when I free writing first. I realized what I have been practicing for many writing projects is called first order thinking, then I later apply a second order thinking for the correctness.
First order thinking is when you free-write without any real direction and control. Second-order thinking is controlled thinking and what many refer to as critical thinking. Elbow, favors towards first order of thinking because he feels that is when people 's best work is done.
Elbow says that when writing in first order, we really have no clear direction and structure and it causes our writing to not be valuable. Now that I have noticed the cons he brought attention to, I agree with what he said because I always write with really no direction because everything seems to flow when there is no direction. However; I do structure it later, which is another time when second order thinking comes in hand. Elbow had a lot of negative things to say about second order thinking, but he did recognized that first order does have cons, so it best to use both orders as a team. I have always had troubles writing the introduction of papers. The introduction is the base and sets the mood of the whole paper. I believe it is the most important paragraph in the paper. But once I develop the introductory paragraph, I find the rest of the paper easier to write. In order for me to better myself in writing introductory paragraphs, I just have to get more in touch with my creative side. After the rough draft, the students of the class would bring their papers to the course and would get into groups to peer review the papers. This would helpful to receive the views of our peers to help edit our assignment. After the peer review of the rough draft, the next step of the writing process was the revision. The revision was when we take the information and opinions from the groups and corporate them into our papers. With “Shitty First Drafts” the focus is more on overcoming fear and forgetting judgement to allow the creative thoughts flow freely. Once the writing is done, the writer can return to their work and revise however they see fit. The disadvantage of this method, however, is that the writer could end up with something chaotic, and time-consuming to reorganize and edit. This is even suggested in “Accordions, Frogs, and the 5 Paragraph Theme”. With practice and knowledge of basic organization skills, authors are able to save precious editing time and keep a readable train of thought into something effective. However, these techniques that I fostered as a child proved lacking when I entered middle school. It turns out that in comparison to my previous writing, I was no longer writing for my own self-improvement or joy; I was now writing to please someone who was grading the work. After many dissatisfying remarks about my writing, the self-conscious feelings I had as a child crept up on me once again. I felt the need to impress and be perfect. For every paper I wrote from then on, there was that little voice in the back of my head telling me that I had to try twice as hard because English was my second language. For a very long time, I was not able to write a paper without scrutinizing it harshly. “The oppressor,” as Anne Lammot states in “Bird by Bird,” kept me from what I truly wanted to write and made me focus on the unattainable goal of being perfect. Perfection is something that “… limit[s] us…[and] keep[s] us from experiencing life” (Lammott 30). The writing process is always taught as a set way of doing things when, in fact, it is a process that requires personal methods that work for each individual person. It is a necessary lesson to teach in school but there should not be so much emphasis on following the exact way that is taught. It is a contrived process that was probably created by a group of scholars who didn’t even follow these exact rules. If anything, they all did variations of the ideas and then met in the middle with what should be taught. I am in no way saying that the guidelines are wrong but they need to be exactly that, guidelines, instead of a rut that students get stuck in.

I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
There were once three friends Luke, Adam, and Eli. They were running for their lives from alien soldiers. They had only some food, water and a knife each. “Runnnnn they're gaining on us!” yelled Luke who was at the front. After they lost them they stopped to rest. They were in the forest of pyrex. They knew they had to get to hi valley for it was the only safe place in all the world. They were close to the place thought they just had to avoid many soldiers and bullets and then it would be a straight shot to the valley. Eli pointed to a map and said “It might be a few day stretch from here.” “But” interrupted Adam “There are soldiers everywhere that will shoot you on the spot,” luke said “We should go this way through the Spirit forest because, there is no way any soldier would go through it.” even though the voyage would take longer it was the safest way.
Writing has always been challenging for me because of the complexity of multiple rules. In the beginning of the semester I constantly worried about the structure of my writing and its overall material. In high school it was important for me to complete my essays by answering the questions that I was given, but in college, students go more into depth such as focusing in grammar, and well structured ideas that flow along with rich analytical content. After given my first assignment I was pushed to improve my overall work by focusing on organization and thinking more analytically. For example, the weekly readings and writing assignments helped me improve my overall work. Later on, these two techniques, organizing and analyzing work were useful
Writing Lessons by Stanley Fish was a reading I found myself dreading to start. Before actually beginning, my thoughts were that this reading would be extremely mundane. I then realized that it needed to be done and that the sooner I begun, the sooner I would finish. After finishing the first paragraph, I then found myself grasped and fully engaged in the reading - not just because I was interested in the content and story but because I actually was able to sit back and learn from it. Writing is something I feel comfortable and capable of doing, but this reading gave me a better grip on the actual structure of sentences.

It’s an interesting question, and one that can be difficult to answer. Everybody will have his or her own idea of what makes writing “good” writing. This question depends on the individual experiences of everyone asked, and so it can be almost impossible to pin down a definite reply. In truth, there isn’t really a right answer, just a pile of suggestions and general opinions that are formed differently in every individual’s mind.

Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.

My approach to writing will always be to present the information in a way that they see it as something they can use to enhance their writing not things they need to know. I want my students to be able to use written language to thier advantage and be very flexible in the way they write. Therefore in my classroom there will always be the implementation of standards and necessary knowledge with creative freedom. Students must prove and demonstrate knowledge in comfortable and uncomfortable writing and be able to identify the styles of writing. I want to teach my students every possible style of essay, and style of every other writing so they are well rounded I knowledge of how to write and how to use writing as a means to achieve an end.
