Teaching - A Rewarding Profession
Being the first to attend college in my family, it was hard to decide what field I wanted to go into. There were so many choices. In making such a large lifelong decision, I decided to follow my heart. I thought back to when I was in high school at Narrows. I had a wonderful experience there. I also had some great, inspiring teachers. One teacher sticks out clearly to me. It was my AP Biology class my senior year.
The teacher expected so much. He came into the room energetic. Full of life. Determined. And only being a student, I could tell this. He strived to teach to all the different learning styles in the classroom. No one was allowed to "slide" by. He used repetition and hands-on assignments as methods to relate the subject matter he taught. He had all the components that every great teacher should have; empathy, caring, drive, determination, motivation, creativeness, patience, reflection, originality, enthusiasm.... This superb individual is the reason I want to teach. I want to make a difference in children's lives like he made in mine. I want to encourage and push students beyond their expectations to meet mine. I am a firm believer that setting higher expectations as a teacher increases achievement in the classroom.
I believe teaching is one profession where several professions are combined. meaning, I will not only be a teacher but, also, a role model, counselor, parent, nurse, care provider, official, and several other 'professions' in one days' work. I believe each child regardless of race, culture, gender, etc has the potential to an everlasting, promising educational future. As a teacher, I will have to provide whatever means necessary to fulfill my duties as an effective teacher. I hope at the end of each school year the students will have rewarding endeavors as a result of my teaching.
In my classroom, I hope to take an authoritarian approach to classroom management. I believe an organized, well managed environment allows for productivity and knowledge intake. I represent several different philosophical approaches in maintaining and teaching my classroom. I would be a progressivist because it encourages others to cooperate and understand different opinions from fellow classmates.
Clinical psychology has evolved immensely and continues to make strides in the field of psychology. It focuses on assessing, diagnosing and treating individuals so that they can achieve a sense of wellbeing and normalcy. Research and by extension, statistics continues to play a key role in the development of the field, as research leads to extensive knowledge and the pioneering of future studies and information. Though clinical psychology may bear a striking resemblance to that of other mental health professions, it stands apart as a field that is primarily concerned with treating the mental disarray of individuals and studying the treatments that are most effective.
Over 50 years ago, English-speaking managers were directly introduced to Henry Fayol’s theory in management. His treatise, General and Industrial Management (1949), has had a great effect on managers and the practice of management around the world. However, 24 years after the English translation of Fayol, Henri Mintzberg in the Nature of Managerial Work (1973) developed another theory and stated that Fayol’s work was just “folklores”.
Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol are both considered classical contributors to management theory. Both were developing and expression their viewpoints at similar time period with the aim of “raising standard of management in industry” (Brodie,1967, p7) in a period were very few publications and theories on management. While both theories were developed with the same influencing factors such as war, social struggles and industrial revolution (Urwick. 1951, p7) each developed quite different management theories. Henry Fayol is a scholar of French national and was born in 1841. The scholar Fayol was born at the cusp of French’s industrial revolution. Fayol mainly developed theories on management and organization of labor. Fayol developed the theory of management out of the experiences of French economy in the early years of the 19th century. During this period, France was underdeveloped compared to countries like Britain and Prussia. During this period the unification of Germany further exposed the underdevelopment of France and made it more economically insecure. Fayol is believed to be the founding father of the administration school and the first to describe management as a top down process based on planning and the organization of people (Thomson 2004).
Even though most of the teachers that taught me in school were very high-quality, a few were just not up to par. I hope to be a better teacher. I want children to look back and think that I was the one teacher that was different than the rest. I want to be on the same level as the children that I am teaching. I want to motivate my children to learn, to enjoy learning. I want to teach so I can show children the joys of learning.
My aspect towards which philosophies to use in education is eclectic. I predominately agree with the Progessivist theory because it is student centered and perceives students as individuals. I believe that these individual needs should be expressed and accommodated in the classroom. I also feel its important for the educational environment to include a democratic process, where students have a chance to voice their opinions about the material they will learn and the rules that they must follow. I feel that when students help direct their own path, that they gain more respect in the classroom and increase their drive to learn. Another factor I’m akin to about using Progressivism in the classroom is that it is experience-centered and deals with actual problems that students face in life. I agree with John Dewey’s belief that students learn more by doing because it has meaning. An additional belief that Dewey and myself consider vital is that students should learn how to apply previously learned information and skills to solve new issues. This teaches students’ critical thinking skills and problem solving methods.
Do you remember the teacher that inspired you to do your best? Or maybe the teacher who believed in you when the rest of the world had turned against you? Teachers have a way of touching students’ lives, whether in a large or very minute way. I can think of numerous times that a teacher made a difference in my life. I am so appreciative of them, and I want to do for other students what many of my teachers have done for me. That is why, after I obtain, both, my Bachelor and Master degrees, I plan to enter the teaching profession.
Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. In becoming an educator, I hope to someday share the knowledge and lend the helping, supportive hand that I was once given, allowing students to formulate their own perspectives of the multicultural society and world around them. Teaching is a career I have been interested in pursuing throughout high school, and as my experiences and study in the field expands, I feel that my desire to teach will grow stronger and develop more soundly.
Management plays a significant role in how business operates. The diversity of approaches to the theoretical and practical background of management has come up with several versions of what is meant by such key words as management and organization. The academia views expressed in relation to management theories take a different role than that prescribed to managers. There has not been any concrete definition of management even though the classic definition of Henri fayol still remains in contention to be the preferred choice after eighty years. Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
I believe that teaching is the most important profession in the world. How else can we continue to develop in such a technical world, or in any other way, for that matter? Without the transfer of knowledge to young minds, we will stagnate and wither as a world. Teaching is hope for better, more successful futures. Learning is hope for becoming better individuals, for gaining intelligence, and for implementing practical experiences in our future. Since we always tell our children that they should plan for their futures and work to realize those goals, the teaching profession should “practice what it preaches” by helping young people to reach those goals. Teaching reading during the past five years has been rewarding beyond my imagination. I have watched non-readers become readers, I have watched scores and student confidence improve, and I have been part of that change. What a reward!
Like many people, my personal experiences have shaped who I am. As a future educator, I want my students to respect me as a teacher, but understand that I will be there for every one of them, whenever they need me. I will not judge them; I will only encourage them to do their best. I will show them that learning can be fun and that school is more than just memorizing facts, it’s about opening your mind to new ideas and experiencing things that will change your
My philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism and progressivism . I feel that knowledge can be learned from a textbook, but I also want my students to use other means of knowledge. I fell in certain times, I should be the center of the classroom and other times, the students should be the center. Education is about the students and I am there to guide them through their journey. I think it's important to let children learn by exploring. By doing this, they choose what information is important and should be retained. When it comes to learning, students should always be in the center. The teachers are only there to mentor and improve upon a child's skills. In my mind progressivism with a mix of essentialism is the best philosophy for me to follow.
