For my song, I chose Fifteen by Taylor Swift. This is a very touching song, it talks about freshman year of high school, finding your first love and then they use you and don't love you back. The overall mood of this song is remorse. The persona of Taylor is that of a new freshman. Taylor uses figurative language such as “your head spin around”, “gave everything she had”, “look before you fall”, “time can heal most anything”, “feeling like flying”, and “Feeling like there's nothing to figure out”. Taylor is comparing a first kiss to a spinning head, and flying to a first date. Her figurative language enhanced the song because it made you feel how the person felt. ** The overall message of Fifteen is “look before you leap”, or, in Taylor’s words,
I have chosen to do two songs waiting on a woman by Brad Presley witch the whole song makes a gender stereotype about woman always making a man wait. The second song I choose to do is George Straits A fathers Love which enforces it’s hard to be a father and what a good strong dad role model is. Both songs spoke to me in different ways.
The title of the short story, “Four Directions” is symbolic for Waverly’s inner misconceptions. As she goes about her life, she is pulled in different ways by her past and her present. She is torn between her Chinese heritage and her American life. She never thought that instead of being pulled in four directions, she could take all of her differences and combine them. In the end she realizes this with the help of her mother. “The three of us, leaving our differences behind...moving West to reach East” (184), thought Waverly. Her whole life she misconceived her mother’s intentions. Lindo never wanted Waverly to solely focus on her Chinese heritage, but rather combine it with her new American ways. The idea of being pulled in four
My first song I´ve chosen is Sean McGee, song titled My Story. Mainly the song is about him facing different struggles, obstacles, and all the horrible things and situations he´s been in throughout his life. I can connect to this song and the lyrics for many reasons. One of his lines were ¨Do you know how it feels to be left out in the rain¨? And I have faced times like this when I feel like no one is there or have my back, and in the line he´s trying express how it feels to have nobody and be all alone. Also throughout this song he expresses how everyday you wake up your face with something rather it's just a minor issue or something that will greatly impact your life.
In the novel, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, he describes parts of his war experiences through the stories told throughout the book. O’Brien discusses the gory detailed chaos of the Vietnam war and his fellow “soldiers.” As O’Brien gives detail of the his “fictional” experiences, he explains why he joined the war. He also describes a time where his “character” wanted to escape a draft to Canada.
Tatiana de Rosnay used different literary tools to assist her writing in order to deepen the story, including figurative language, dramatic irony, and foreshadowing. The use of figurative language helps to clarify a description in order to place an image in the mind of the reader. Similes are the main type of figurative language used throughout Sarah’s Key, allowing the reader to see what is happening. Many images conjured up make comparisons as a child would make them, as much of the story concerns the innocence of a child, such as “[t]he oversized radiators were black with dirt, as scaly as a reptile” (Rosnay 10) and “[t]he bathtub has claws” (Rosnay 11). Other descriptions compare Sarah, and Zoe, to a puppy, a symbol of innocence, as children are known to be
Poetry conveys emotions and ideas through words and lines. Long Way Down gives the story about a boy named Will, who wants to avenge his brother. He believes that a guy named Riggs killed his brother. He takes his brother’s gun and leaves his family’s apartment on the eighth floor. On the way down the elevator, he is stopped at each floor and a ghost from his past gets on.
Rhetoric is defined as “the art of effective speaking or writing; language designed to persuade or impress; eloquence, way with words, gift of gab.” We see rhetorical devices being used in our day-to-day life. Sometimes we might not realize that it’s being used and other times it might be obvious. One of the most common example where rhetorics are used is t.v. commercials. Every commercial uses certain rhetorical devices to capture their audience’s attention and leave an impact on them.
In his book, “Into The Wild” Krakauer develops a position on McCandless through the use of figurative language in the way that he describes McCandless. Krakauer, although sympathetic to what McCandless was going through, failed to show McCandless as a misunderstood, noble young man. Instead Krakauer portray McCandless as immature and indecisive. He does this by including all of McCandless’ encounters with adult where he became dependent on someone's help and guidance. Also, he includes all the time that McCandless back and forth and even attempted to find a job. Although Krakauer may have intended to show the audience the softer side of Christopher McCandless, in doing this he has just push the audience closer to seeing that McCandless was nothing but a young minded
In this message by Jonathan Swift, he comes up with a brilliant idea to boost the economy and eliminate the burden of feeding hungry mouths of the poor Irish folk’s children, by selling and cooking their children like live stock. The author presents the argument with a simple, easy and cost efficient solution to the underlying problem. Swift ultimately presents that eating the Irish’s babies would solve the poor catholic Irish parent’s problem and would also be beneficial to the public as well. The author also collected data about how many children could to be sold by their weight and price, and the projected consumption patterns. ----Add more!!maybe?
For many of us, one of the most accurate and effective ways to express the feelings that really matter to us is through music. We don’t only grow to attached to songs that are catchy, but also those with lyrics that we can relate to. It is not uncommon to feel like sometimes, artists can convey the way we feel better than we could ourselves. The storybook-like lines you read at the start of this page are a collection of lyrics
Throughout history, poets had experimented with different forms of figurative language. Figurative language allows a poet to express his or her meaning within a poem. The beauty of using the various forms of figurative language is the ability to convey deep meaning in a condensed fashion. There are many different figures of speech that a poet can use such as: simile, paradox, metaphor, alliteration, and anaphora. These examples only represent a fraction of the different forms, but are amongst the most well-known. The use of anaphora in a poem, by a poet, is one of the best ways to apply weight or emphasis on a particular segment. Not only does an anaphora place emphasis, but it can also aid in setting the tone, or over all “feel” a reader receives from a poem. Poets such as Walt Whitman, Conrad Aiken, and Frances Osgood provide poems that show how the use of anaphora can effect unity, feeling, and structure of a poem.
In 2013 a truly inspiring song hit the charts across the world. A young Grammy Award-winning New Zealand performer by the real name, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, and by the stage name, Lorde, dropped her first single “Royals” in 2013 along with her first debut album 'Pure Heroine.' The song, written by Lorde herself and John Little, hit the number one charts in the UK and in many other counties. Lorde was only 16 when "Royals" hit the charts, making her the youngest solo artist in modern day music. In this essay, I will be analyzing the lyrics to her hit single "Royals.
Mark Rosenberg, mainly known as the front of Passenger, is a British singer and songwriter. Eventually the band broke apart, but Rosenberg kept the stage name of Passenger. In 2012, he released a song named “Let Her Go,” which became an international hit (Biography). The success of this song may have occurred because of its poetic style and figurative language. In combination with touching lyrics, they had created a deep song about a lost relationship which is told in the second-person point of view to appeal directly to the audience. The vagueness in the lyrics allows the listener to connect with this song and interpret it in different ways from a failed relationship to a passed loved one. These ideas are conveyed by Rosenberg’s use of poetic elements. The use of rhyme, repetition, and figurative language creates a strong emotional connection among Passenger and his fans.
In current society, almost each and every person has been told folktales from different cultures around the world. Though the stories may intrigue the reader; the main purpose is to get some type of point across. With each story, the reader can see the cultural differences, whether it be social classes, or their beliefs in religion to teach a certain norm or lesson that connects to their life. The story Our Lady’s Child better known as Mary’s Child, is a german folktale that incorporates the catholic church into the tale. It focuses on the idea of dishonesty and how the repercussions can hurt someone if they chose to continue the path of it.
I also think of lyrics that shout out my life story and I know that I am not the only one to feel this way which is why Swift has such a big fan base. Taylor Swift will leave a lasting impression on society to come. She is one of the few females on Forbes 40 list and makes more money than many other male artists. Not only is she an inspiration to females everywhere, but she is also an inspiration to her own fellow artists. Swift can be seen dancing at any awards ceremony she attends and has a genuinely good outlook on life. It’s crazy how she connects with her fans on such a personal level. I have been in concerts where there hasn’t been one dry eye in the arena because of the amount of emotion that Taylor Swift puts into her songs. Swift has been nominated as Time’s Woman of the Year because she is such a vibrant young woman (Dickey,
