What do you think of when you hear the word DARE? Do you think about the game Truth or Dare? I think about a class by the name of DARE. DARE teaches all sorts of important lessons that will help you with life. Some are dangers of alcohol, how to make safe decisions, and effects of bullying to name a few. I will be helping you learn about Dangers Of Tobacco, How To Deal With Stress, and Telling VS. Tattling. I hope you will learn lots from this essay about DARE! You know people smoke, but do you know how it destroys their bodies? Here’s why. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the brain. This could cause irrational decision making or slowing of bodily functions. It works because nicotine is like the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is responsible for muscle movements, heart rate and memory to name a few. It is also responsible for releasing the feeling of pleasure. That is why nicotine is soooo addictive. Nicotine is not the only drug out there though. Tobacco is …show more content…
popular in cigarettes. Here is an example of two people, Darrel who smokes and James who does not. Day 1: Darrel is feeling normal. James is feeling normal. Day 3: Darrel has a slight cough. James is feeling normal. Day 7: Darrel’s cough has severely worsened. He is also finding it hard to breathe. James is still normal. Day 13: Darrel is nearly always is coughing. He also is finding it extremely hard to breathe. James is hungry. Day 20: Darrel’s cough has gotten better and he finds easier to breathe. His fingers are seemingly turning yellow. James is tired because he only got 3 hours of sleep last night. Day 25: Darrel has been diagnosed with cancer. James is feeling normal. Day 50: Darrel is dead… James is feeling normal. Day 60: Darrel is a box of ashes. James is at Darrel’s funeral. Don’t end up like Darrel, be like James! So don’t let smoking ruin YOUR body! Stress can be stressful right? First of all what is stress? Stress is kind of like your body’s way of buckling under pressure. Your body releases chemicals into your bloodstream. We all react when we are stressed but there are some productive ways to let out stress too. Do deep breathing. Or you could also just flat out take a nap. Another good way is to laugh. Hey look a flying pig!! There are also bad ways that give short term relief. One of these is using drugs. You should know why… Overeating is also bad. On a poll 33% of people say they eat without thinking when they are stressed. Another 27% of people say they crave food with high calories when they are stressed. Also eating unhealthy foods raises your blood pressure. Now stressful situations can become even more stressful due to high blood pressure. Now with our new array of ways (and ways not) to deal with stress we can have a more stress-free life! You’ve heard your parents tell you not to tattle on your siblings.
But what’s the difference between tattling and telling? I’ll tell you. Tattling is when you tell about something that did not hurt anyone. For an example let’s say your friend John called you a loser and you told the teacher. This would be tattling because nobody was physically hurt by this. There was also nothing severe he said. He might have even been joking. You don’t normally get mad at your friends for joking right? So now you know what tattling is but what’s telling. Telling is when you tell about something that has hurt or endangered someone. As an example let's say you see Bobby shove Little Timmy on the playground. Timmy falls and breaks his arm. If you told the teacher this would be telling because you saw Bobby hurt Timmy. Also Timmy needed medical attention so you would tell about that anyway. So there’s telling for you. Now that we know the difference between telling and tattling let’s all try not to be tattle
tales. Now that we learned about these three lessons from DARE lets recap what they said. DARE has taught us that drugs can kill you. We also learned bout good ways to deal with stress. Writing this essay has been stressful. Let’s take a break from all the stress and j- Hey look the pig is back! We learned the differences between telling and tattling. You don’t want to be a tattle tale do you? Tattling can be annoying, so let’s tell not tattle. I hope you have learned as much from this DARE essay as I have. I pledge to stay off drugs. I will also not let stress take over my life, and not be a big fat tattle tale.
Dweck also promotes that a lesson can be something that can something creative that its only purpose is to develop a growth mindset in students. These creative methods can be something so simple as playing a video and followed by class discussion to group discussion about their own thoughts/meanings or a simple game of “Memory” in order to engage students to learn in a fun
Learning is important for countless reasons, the most important reason being that it molds a person into who he or she is. What people choose to learn, and also what they choose not to, create the core of their opinions as individuals. Though people do not admit it or openly declare it, it is fair to say almost everyone is self centered. Because of this, and the fact that learning dramatically affects a person, learning is not only thrilling, but also expressive. Furthermore, since learning is expressive, its meaning varies from person to person, therefore making each person’s experiences with learning unique and life changing.
Nicotine is a highly toxic substance (LD40) which can affect the brain, central and autonomic nervous system
Cigarette addiction is responsible for over four million deaths every year. The question most people ask is why don’t people just put down their cigarettes? Well, the answer to that often asked question is nicotine. Nicotine is a neurotransmitter that targets certain receptors in the brain. It is a chemical messenger that induces feelings of pleasure. When someone takes a hit off of a cigarette, they ingest the harmful chemicals that can cause cancer and other serious health threats. They only inhale these chemicals to get one thing and one thing only, nicotine.
...e compulsive disorder, antisocial disorders and paranoia have all been linked to those who are nicotine dependant” (Grant, Hasin, Chou, November 2004). Those are all mental side effects of nicotine. Physical side effects of nicotine are anywhere from increase in blood pressure to cancers of the heart and lungs. It impairs particularly your senses of taste and smell. In fact, “smoking is the largest cause of preventable death in the United States” (Grant, Hasin, Chou, November 2004), with “1 out of every 5 deaths caused by it” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, June 5, 2013).
Mueller wrote, “someone is getting beaten and someone else is doing the beaten”, this is an example of how a situation not only causes but also affects a person’s behavior. A person who is abusive often times has a tremendous amount of built up anger and aggression. Someone who is abused often times feels empty, hurt or confused whereas the abuser may feel powerful, relieved or even guilty. What may inspire one person may break another. There is no exact code or reason for how a person is affected by a situation.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Based on John’s progress in the report card no changes to diet or exercise were needed. At the end of the two month period he had lost 21 pounds. He reported feeling healthier, happier, and his blood sugar and blood pressure levels had decreased substantially. For his second goal to achieve a support system he had only made one friend, which was a neighbor that sometime came over to check on him occasionally throughout the two months. In order to do get John more support I researched some 55 and up communities for John and his wife who stilled lived in the same home that they raised their child in. John was open to the idea of moving to a 55 and up community and downsizing his home and bills. After researching various communities and prices
Which uses student voted peers to lead classroom discussions and activities, taking the DARE officer out almost completely. DARE PLUS is a ten session class for middle schoolers that “provides skills in recognizing and resisting influences to use drugs and to handle violent situations. It also focuses on character-building and becoming a citizen in our communities,”(Perry et al 3). The first part of the program is classroom based while the second part is after school activities. Students help create and decide which activities they will be doing to keep the program student driven. Activities such as: neighborhood watch clubs, working with local police officers, creating positive messages around the school, etc.. Students were shown to be 50% less likely to experiment with drugs most likely due to the fact that they had people to fall back on in time of need. These activities built great relationships with other students and members of the community(Perry et al). This is exactly what should be done, this pared with the drug education from required health classes and standard fifth or sixth grade classes is the best way to
Smoking reduces stamina, endurance, and strength, diminishes health, and deteriorates organs as well as the nervous system. People who smoke often claim that smoking reduces their stress and helps them relax.
So how does smoking actually affect your health? They are many reasons why smoking cigarettes affects you, what your body needs is food, water, sleep, and exercise not all the poisons in a cigarette, each time you smoke your body is gradually dying in the insides, smoking is responsible for 1 out of 5 deaths. Smoking can just cause bad skin, bad breath, bad- smelling clothes and hair, reduced athletic performance, greater risk of injury and slower healing time, and increased risk of illness, and that’s just for what smoking can cause before the long run, not at all the worse things that would happen to your body in the long
The bottom line is that the drug nicotine can be very harmful to one’s health. This has been a wide range fact for quite some time. The health risks of smoking are displayed through advertisement’s daily. Despite scientific value related to smoking, the risks and dangers are too strong to make a valid argument in favor of smoking.
Smoking cigarettes is a very deadly addiction that, unfortunately, affects 42.1 million adults in the United States and 6.4 million children. The reason why so many people get addicted to cigarettes is because of nicotine. Medicinenet.com says that nicotine is “made by the tobacco plant or produced synthetically”. Nicotine has powerful pharmacologic effects (including increased heart rate, heart stroke volume, and oxygen consumption by the heart muscle), as well as powerful psychodynamic effects (such as euphoria, increased alertness, and a sense of relaxation). Nicotine is also powerfully addictive.”
There are many causes which make people smoke, however it can be divided into two main causes: physical and psychological. First cause which is physical concerns the human body’s needs. Nicotine contained in cigarette is an addictive substance. It is the chemical which causes addiction. Nicotine reduces tension in the muscles and allows smokers to relax so they feel that they can relieve stress by smoking. Nicotine can also have a calming effect on people who are anxious and worried. This is why it can bring a feeling of tranquility and help smokers to cope with stress. Thus, people smoke when they are depressed, lonely or bored. Nicotine is absorbed by the smoker’s lung and intestines. Very quickly, nicotine can stimulate brain and certain types of nerves so heart rate and blood pressure go up; respiration increases. A little nicotine makes smokers feel more energy and improve concentration. As a consequence, these physical effects created by smoking play an important role in making people feel the need to smoke.
It’s not that easy to quit smoking cigarettes, it can be very hard especially for many people who have been smoking for years. Many people are addicted to this drug because of the nicotine that’s in the tobacco, which is very addictive. Nicotine is the most common word that most smokers use and is there excuse why they can’t stop saying “it’s so addicting”. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal (Smoking). Nicotine is the main addictive ingredient in a cigarette that activates synthesis of a chemical called dopamine in the brain (Naturstopp). This is just one of the chemicals that are in a cigarette, there are over 599 more chemicals that are in a cigarette. To name a few there is acetone, ammonia, tar, benzene, cadmium, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides etc (Naturstopp). Some of these chemicals might not seem harmful, but it’s the burning of these chemicals that produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds more than 4000 of them (Naturstopp). Smoking cigarettes can be devastating; especially with each inhale you exhale.
