My fondest childhood memories involve the Livermore Rodeo, and I simply cannot remember a day in my life where I was not completely in love with this great rodeo. The 2nd weekend of June has always been my favorite time of year and from a very early age, I wanted to help in any way I could. My whole day was easily made anytime I was given a task that would allow me to help out the wonderful directors and volunteers I dreamed of being when I grew up. Being apart of the group that makes Livermore Rodeo possible was just about the coolest thing little me could dream of… besides being Miss Livermore Rodeo Queen of course! So I started helping with little tasks like tying bows on silverware for the queen dinner, moving chairs, wrapping hot dogs, and trying to sell tickets to all my friends at school. Then a day came where I was lucky enough to be apart of S.P.U.R.S. I had already know that I wanted to spend the rest of my life helping to keep the sport of rodeo and the western way of life alive, S.P.U.R.S gave me the opportunity to start helping out my most favorite rodeo in greater ways at a younger age. Whether in the spotlight as Miss Livermore Rodeo Queen, or behind the scenes cleaning up after an event on a hot summer day, it was, is , and always will be my honor and my pleasure to serve rodeo in any way I can. If I am chosen as the recipient
...Maine. More than 80,000 fans show up to these events. These events are usually the cause of huge traffic jams and a three day party. People come from all over the world just to experience the sense of community, as well as the intriguing music.
After over three decades of broadcasting from the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry, a live country radio program, moved about nine miles out of the city to Opryland U.S.A. A few months following the move, hostess Carolyn Holloran said “Country music is wherever the soul of a Country music fan is!”1 This quote was spoken in reference to the relocation of the Grand Ole Opry. Nevertheless, it can transcend this context to further describe the genre of Country music. From its roots in the Appalachians, to its commercialization and crossovers, Country music has come to represent the culture of the Southern United States. Through this music people have formed a collective identity which respects the past and hails the future. It is a genre that has grown and changed with its people.
After reading the poem entitled “Youth”, I felt that James Wright was not only describing the life of his father but also the lives of the many other factory workers in the Ohio Valley. Many of these workers had either dropped out of school or went straight to the factories after high school, never really getting a chance to enjoy their lives as young `````adults. I think that has something to do with the title of this poem. It’s clear that Wright knew his father and the other men were not satisfied with their jobs and just chose not to speak about it. These factory workers slaved away and then came home “quiet as the evening” probably because they were content to just be relaxing at home with their families. They knew that this was their way of life and they had to do it, even if they had big dreams to someday get away. I think that Wright was also trying to make a point that these men who worked so hard every day were not valued as much as they should have been. These men did not have the education to get a higher paying job but they did have the proper skills and knowledge to work in the factories. I like that James Wright mentioned Sherwood Anderson in this poem as I enjoy his work. Anderson left his Ohio hometown for Chicago to pursuit bigger and better things because he knew if he stayed in the area, he would be unhappy. However, it is a little ironic that Anderson one day just got up and left in the middle of writing and was said to have a mental breakdown.
Along with the peak of several movements music began to reach a point of climax. Rock specifically began to flourish in the 1960’s, while expressing the voice of the liberated generation. It is the power of such trends that overall lead to what is known as the greatest music festival of all time: Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The festival started on August 15, 1969 on Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York. Appealing to the time period, Woodstock was designed to be Three Days of Peace and Music. However, many argue that it was more than just a musical art fair of peace, but a historically significant event that shifted American culture. While some regard Woodstock as the beginning of a cultural advancement and the end of a naïve era, others view it as ridiculous hippy festival infested with illegal drug usage. Woodstock cost over $2.4 million and attracted over 450,000 people (Tiber, 1). Despite the debate of whether Woodstock produced a positive or negative effect, it is clear that a note worthy impact was made. When discussing the overall impact of Woodstock it is important to look at the influences and creative plan and the positive and negative effects produced from the festival.
The debate whether commercialism has stripped country music of its authenticity is one that requires further examination into who ultimately holds the power. The sometimes-drastic changes made in music leaves people questioning the tastes of consumers when in fact they are the bystanders of an overpowering industry. Fans are people who buy the albums, go to concerts, and request songs on the radio, not the execs that market the music, and yet their opinions/tastes aren’t taken into consideration. Fans carry a lot of clout in regards to what they define as commercialism gone wrong and acceptable country music. Despite what may seem fair, those who are financially invested in its success drive the commercialization of music.

Country music has long been a genre of music that speaks to millions of people. Over the years country music has transformed from the traditionalism of its roots, to the modern pop culture inspired country we have today. Today country music artists are consumed with becoming famous and with making profit. But has this modern country music, which some refer to as sixth genre country, become too consumed with pop culture. For those who enjoy this genre, we must also ask if it has lost touch with the traditionalism it once had. Perhaps the country that is produced today wants to stray from its origins and become a new genre in and of itself.

Country music has been an ever changing genre that evolves along with the lives of the people that listen and the artist that perform it. Today’s country music contains a wide variety of artists who have been influenced by the different subgenres that came before them. According to The Bedford Book of Genres “A genre is a composition’s kind, category, or sort. Genres give us a way to categorize or describe types of compositions”. (Braziller and Kleinfeld) Exactly what country music is today can be hard to define, but a look back at the history of the genre shows how it has adapted to the audience that listens to it and how current artist draw inspiration from it. There are two things we need to know

Country music is typically associated with or discusses the conservative south. This is because country music of today and yesterday discusses rural southern living in its lyrics. Audiences also associate country music with the south because they believe all country artists are from the south. The cause of this logi...
