Tale of Two Cities is a classic novel that was written by Charles Dickens, who had a personal experience with the events in the book and wrote it for many reasons. He wrote it to inform people across the world about what was going on in France and England, as well as to shine a light on how much power the wealthy had over everyone else in society. Charles Dickens was born in 1812, in the midst of the Industrial Revolution in England and was forced to deal with the struggle of the revolution. He grew up during a time where a poor working class family like his had to deal with many hardships throughout daily life. France and England were both experiencing major revolutions, The Industrial Revolution in England and the French Revolution in France. These major events severely impacted common life in these countries. The French Revolution was a revolt of the lower and middle classes against the overpowered and wealthy upper class. The upper class had certain luxuries that the lower and middle classes could not afford like paying less taxes while the less wealthy were forced to do all the dirty work. This revolt led to the overthrowing of the French government which had completely shook the social and political structure of France. The Industrial Revolution was the transformation of the style of manufacturing goods in England. This led to the establishment of many factories which needed workers to keep up with the growing economy. These worker were often members of the lower class and young kids who worked for hours with little pay to support their families.
