Zeami Motokiyo, one of the best-known nō writers, is the author of Tadanori. The setting is in Suma during the season of autumn. Tadanori is considered a warrior play, shura mono, because the story deals with a warrior who died in battle. This, however, is the not the main focus of the drama. Due to his untimely death and the defeat of the Taira clan, Tadanori’s spirit lingers on in the world for wanting a poem to be in an imperial anthology with his name as the author. He struggles with this and thus ask the wandering monk to help him fulfill his dreams and to pray for him as well. The cast in Tadanori is as follows: the monk is the waki, the companions are the wakizure, the old man, who is the unidentified Tadanori, is the maeshite, the villager is the ai, and lastly Taira no Tadanori is the nochijite. This list and order follows the sequence of a typical nō. It generally starts with a travelling monk who meets an interesting character. The monk would then notice a symbolic object, which in this case was the Young Cherry Tree. Next the background information would be given by a person such as a villager. Finally the monk would meet and discover the identity of the wandering ghost in need of prayer. Tadanori’s jo-ha-kyū contains the intro jo, three ha’s, and a kyū. This is typical arrangement in nō dramas. The jo starts from the beginning of the play with the background information about the monk up until the old man appears. From there on is where the first ha begins. The second ha is when the villager comes along and talks to the monk about the story of the Young Cherry Tree and the significance behind whose grave it belonged to. When the villager leaves and Tadanori appears, Tadanori talks about his desire and reason wh... ... middle of paper ... ... the blossoms” and again when “the flower again shall seek his root.” I thought then perhaps although the main story was about the monk helping Tadanori, Tadanori also helped the monk. At the start of the story the monk states that he was “one who no longer loves even blossoms” meant that he no longer loved poetry. On the next page though I thought it was strange how he said, “let us rest awhile and look at the cherry blossoms”. “These blossoms, O monk, drew you on to seek lodging here, because I wished that you should hear my tale.” Although Tadanori did it for his own reasons, in the end, it showed the monk that he could not leave poetry (266-267, 271,276). During the summer, I read a novel entitled Nilda written by Nicholasa Mohr. I found the novel interesting and different from ordinary novels because Nilda had a different style of writing, a journal-like style. The story is mainly about the life a young Puerto Rican girl named Nilda during the years of World War II. Nilda goes through numerous experiences that are both good and catastrophic. From camp to miracles and new friends to losing loved ones, Nilda is a novel of surprises waiting to be uncovered.

The graphic novel “This One Summer” by Mariko Tamaki displays a relevant modern-day manner of teenage conversations, dilemma, and emotions in the 21st century. The novel did an accurate illustration in presenting the modern-day concern, curiosity and interest of children and teenagers as one example on page 22, when Windy asked Rose “do you have a boyfriend?” it displays the curiosity of a child in their relative/friends love affair, which most teenagers are mainly concern of nowadays. Body image also takes part on the graphic novel as Windy and Rose talks about the size of their breast on page 35, and comparing it to other people as Windy shares the story “this girl in my dance class is ten and she’s like a D cup. Maybe a G.” The novel illustrates some of the concerns a modern teenager might have, which can be relatable to most young teenage readers as they share the same concern or discussions they have with their friends. The dialogues and conversations that is shown in the book are very vulgar as one example on page 39-40 when the Dud’s friend and the adolescent girls exchanges the words “sluts and assholes”. In the poem pride, Dahlia Ravikovitch uses many poetic devices. She uses an analogy for the poem as a whole, and a few metaphors inside it, such as, “the rock has an open wound.” Ravikovitch also uses personification multiple times, for example: “Years pass over them as they wait.” and, “the seaweed whips around, the sea bursts forth and rolls back--” Ravikovitch also uses inclusive language such as when she says: “I’m telling you,” and “I told you.” She uses these phrases to make the reader feel apart of the poem, and to draw the reader in. She also uses repetition, for example, repetition of the word years.

The noh play, Atsumori focuses on Atsumori, a small but prominent character from the Tale of Heike. Atsumori is the son of Taira no Kiyomori whose death is tragically depicted in chapter 9.16 of the Tale of Heike. After the Taira have been defeated by the Minamoto, Atsumori fails to join the fleeing Taira fleets and is stopped and killed Kumagai no Naozane, a warrior serving the Minamoto clan. Naozane is beside himself with remorse after killing Atsumori and in the Tale of Heike vows to become a monk and in the Noh play, becomes a monk. The Tale of Heike focuses on the perspective of Naozane as he takes Atsumori’s life whereas the noh play focuses on the perspective of Atsumori’s angry spirit. Michael MacDonald’S All Souls is a heart wrenching insider account of growing up in Old Country housing projects located in the south of Boston, also known as Southie to the locals. The memoir takes the reader deep inside the world of Southie through the eyes of MacDonald. MacDonald was one of 11 children to grow up and deal with the many tribulations of Southie, Boston. Southie is characterized by high levels of crime, racism, and violence; all things that fall under the category of social problem. Social problems can be defined as “societal induced conditions that harms any segment of the population. Social problems are also related to acts and conditions that violate the norms and values found in society” (Long). The social problems that are present in Southie are the very reasons why the living conditions are so bad as well as why Southie is considered one of the poorest towns in Boston. Macdonald’s along with his family have to overcome the presence of crime, racism, and violence in order to survive in the town they consider the best place in the world.

There is a large cast of characters including the priest Sarastro (a very serious, proselytizing basso), the Queen of the Night (a mean, angry, scheming coloratura), and her daughter, the beautiful and courageous Pamina. There is the handsome hero, Tamino, on the quintessential road trip, and his cohort in misadventure, the bird seller, Papageno. Papageno ultimately finds his Papagena (who starts out disguised as a crone), Tamino ultimately wins Pamina, Sarastro presumably wins a passle of converts, and everyone goes home humming the catchy Mozart melodies. It is all presented in a plot complicated by a dragon, a threesome of warbling ladies in service to the Queen of the Night, another threesome of boy-angels, even a bully - Monostatos, guard for the Queen. It is lightened by such elements as locked lips, charmed animals, and, of course, a magic flute.
In the last line of the second stanza, the subject enters dramatically, accompanied by an abrupt change in the rhythm of the poem:
