Today’s advanced technology allows many at-home residents more access to the outside world than most average citizens expect. Many of these at-home residents are not even aware of how intrusive they are due a lack of enforcement. Their ignorance is magnified by many individuals who knowingly support free use of copyrighted material. Those who are cognizant of their illicit actions have been allowed a certain amount of leeway up until recently. Even so, there are many problems involved with copyrighted and pirated productions. For instance, a middle school student can download a copyrighted YouTube video through an online converter. This scandal robs many artists of their rights as the producer of that music (France). The artist, or producer, of the music copyrighted his/her work, so that he/she can make a profit. While, the “Big Money Producers,” as the public calls it, do not need the money to make a living, they did compose the music using their own talent and skills. Those who support free use, argue that since the video is free to Stream, it will not be harmful to download (Resnikoff). The fault in this argument is that the supporters falsely believe that money is not being made on the music video. In fact, money is made when average people buy the music from distributers such as iTunes and Google Play. Many companies use YouTube, not so people can listen for free, but to promote their music. If someone finds it on YouTube, they may listen to it because they are interested, and if the possible customer likes the music, he/she should buy it from a distributer.
