Sleep is something we all partake in, unless you have Fatal Familial Insomnia. But why do we need sleep? Why do we feel tired? How do we wake up? These are all questions that have not been answered directly and completely, but have theories and ideas for why these actions happen.
When one wakes up, it is more likely that they have awaken themselves. Circadian rhythms are patterns that repeat every 24 hours that partake in the sleeping and wake cycle. The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the part of the hypothalamus that recognizes changes in light and produces hormones in response to said changes in light. Another possibility is that an individual’s circadian rhythm is out of sync and cannot accept the correct changes in time. As someone with insomnia, it is reassuring to know the basis of why these things occur, and many others could benefit from this knowledge. I have been able to not only understand myself, but comprehend why others are the way they are. Although it is cliché to say, I am truly beginning to understand why these topics are so important. We all consist of brains that function in the same way, but not necessarily in the same way. We have the same “bare bones” structure, yet we are all incredibly different. There are no two people alike, and once society can understand that we are wired to be different, we will be able to all be of one culture.
