Economizing Education Essay As once stated by Franklin Roosevelt, “The school is that last expenditure upon which Americans should be willing to economize.” I completely agree with this statement. Schools, no matter how big or small, all need funding and support in order to provide the best learning environments for their students. I am a firm believer that our schools should be well funded, just as FDR said it’s the last expenditure we should be choose to cut costs on. I do not necessarily believe our government is wanting to economize our school systems, but they aren’t doing very much to help increase our funding. No, it does not, but it can be a start. Many people disagree with the claim that increased school funding has an positive impact on student academic success. I believe it can vary from school to school. If a school is in dire need of funding and it gets that funding, it may take a while to see the results. Where in other cases schools that receive that much needed funding are able to show their positive results immediately. Just like each and every student is different, so is every school in every community. Whether it is a little or drastic difference, money can make a difference. For example, a little difference could be buying new school supplies. Does buying the supplies make a huge difference to the school system and student’s academic success? Probably not, but it would have a difference and positive affect on the student whose family could not afford to buy the supplies for their child. There are also other impacts that funding can influence. By increasing funding to hire certified teachers, buy new textbooks, or increase technology the student success rate would increase as well. As Cory Turner (2016) states, “And what they found is yeah, actually school money can make a big difference, specifically for low-income kids. I'm talking about increasing the likelihood that they would graduate from high school by 10 points and a nearly 10 percent increase in their adult earnings. Now the benefits were statistically insignificant for non-poor kids, but I think coming full circle, to answer the question we started with, for low-income kids yeah, money can make a difference.” After studying spending gaps in our schools and the impact it has on our students, Turner was able to make the claim that yes, funding will have a big difference in the lives of many children. It may not fix all the problems that go on in our school systems but by increasing funding it is a start to making better educated and prepared
