Numerous news headlines and articles can be found today preaching the importance of mental health, and how many people it affects in the world. People tend not to consider, however, where these problems may originate from, especially not at such a young age. The amount of homework assigned to students in today's time has taken what many would agree is a dangerous increase, and the consequences are being debated across the world. Excessive workloads in today’s time should be decreased to a more manageable amount, because it adds unnecessary amounts of stress and can cause students to miss out on important life experiences. An increase in homework means much more than a student simply spending extra time hunched over their desk. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Education states that: “56% of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their lives. Responsibility and time management are highly desirable qualities that benefit students long after they graduate.” Although it is a valid point, the negative side effects of homework begin to outweigh these benefits when the amount becomes larger and seemingly uncontrollable. Despite the world being full of diverse people with varying accomplishments and skill sets, people oftentimes assume the qualities and traits of an individual based purely on the stereotypes set forth by society. Although these stereotypes are unavoidable, an individual can be liberated, empowered and ultimately overcome these stereotypes by obtaining an advanced education.
It is said that Western civilization had been primarily male dominated and as a result as diminished the feminine. Women’s roles in society have changed drastically over the past decades. While it took much time, progress for women’s rights has blossomed. Influences in civilization have affected view points of the commonly held mores, expectations, and stereotypes which define gender.
Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.
Did you know that the average high school student in today’s society has the same levels of anxiety as a psychiatric patient in the 1950s? According to psychologist Robert Leahy, school these days can get a little tough– especially when most students’ first response to a heavy backpack full of homework is to worry over whether or not it can be done. In the past decade, Leahy and other psychologists have noticed a steady nationwide increase in the amount of stress caused by schoolwork among high school students (Slate Magazine). What does this mean for tomorrow’s leaders and future generations of dignitaries? Scientists have concluded that sleep deprivation, long-term health problems, and declining overall academic achievement are lasting effects of homework-related stress on the average student, and they should not be ignored.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.

However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. In today's world many people are impacted by society, either by language or physical movements. Writers use language to inform the problem and needs in society, and how they have been affected by it over time. Writers and authors spread the word about hate, love, war, discrimination, and other topics through literature; books, art, articles, textbooks, and websites. They have one goal though, that is to inform the reader about the situation or the problem, and inspire the reader to take a stand, The goal is to also persuade the reader to lean on the side they favor or think is better, and to impact their lives by the piece they have made. As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. According to scientists too much homework can cause “brain damage to student and multiple students have nervous breakdowns or too much stress” (google news). And other Study show that some student even talked about getting depressed because of all the homework in school and depression can even lead to suicide.” Therefor Munster High School should consider what is important to our life.
Today, many students report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts found that 58% of the students surveyed reported between a great deal of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students in today’s time, have so many things to do that it is difficult for them to come home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after school activities and technology, only adds to the stress that is put on students.
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Michellea, a mother of a middle school student, says that some work can reinforce certain skills, but hours of homework are unhealthy and unproductive. Mominseattle agrees. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. Being born in the Philippines, my uncle would always blast the stereo around the time of December and I would regularly peer at the window on the second floor to look at the fireworks while also checking to see if my mother came home. Since Filipinos love to celebrate Christmas with their families, numerous amounts of people would gather in a group to perform or listen to music.
