Syntax was presented as the last part of the story that gave this selection its final touches to change the story. This can be proven because in paragraph 7, he says, “I got to my feet, stomach taut, mouth tired of chewing, and flung my Frisbee across the street, its shadow like the shadow of an angel fleeing bad deeds. I retrieved it, jogging slowly. I flung it again until I was bored and thirsty.” The way that the sentences are structured makes you think about how he felt after eating the pie that he stole. It also gives the story a sense of emphasis on what Soto did as a 6-year-old boy. He also states in the last paragraph, “I lay until I was cold and then crawled back to the light, rising from one knee, then another, to dust off my pants
and squint in the harsh light I looked and saw the glare of a pie tin on a hot day. I knew sin was what you took and didn’t give back.” The way that these few sentences are written make you pause to take in where he was and what he did. It also shows how powerful his last few words are and how he felt about stealing the pie. Syntax is the last thing that was shown in such a strong way that it helped alter the way the reader reads the story.
When it comes to analyzing the “banana massacre” scene in chapter 15, I found three narrative techniques the author used to describe this scene. Therefore, one can notice that this part of the book is the climax. As a result, one infers what the author is trying to say about Latin American history and politics.
Contrast is used when Soto compares himself to Eve, a biblical character, when God punished her for stealing an apple from a sacred garden. Also in the first line of the story Soto explains he “knew enough about hell to stop me from stealing”, but later in the story he states that, “the best things in life come stolen.” It is obvious these two statements contrast each other. Soto also uses repetition in this story and starts off with the driver, Mrs. Hancock, and his mom who all “knew” that he had stolen the pie. The thing is “knew” is repeated too many times in too little writing. Also though I think using “knew” so many times brings out the element of diction into the narrative because by using the word so many times, it is obviously used to show how paranoid Soto was. The word pie is at least 14 times while “I” is also used at least 42 where in the third paragraph it is used to begin the last three sentences.
...ition is when Soto is sitting on his lawn after eating the pie, and he looks around. "A car honked, and the driver knew. Mrs. Hancock stood on her lawn, hands on her hip, and she knew. My mom, peeling a mountain of potatoes at the Redi-Spud factory, knew." The repetition of knew shows how paranoid Soto is that people are going to find out that he had stolen the pie. Paranoia almost always comes out in people when they are feeling guilty about doing something. It also shows that Soto is not very good at disguising the guilt that he feels.
Author’s Techniques: Rudolfo Anaya uses many Spanish terms in this book. The reason for this is to show the culture of the characters in the novel. At a young age Luis Rodriguez started writing about his life story which becomes a big feat for him because of not getting education in school, gang related problems, and being a leader in school for his fellow classmates. He clearly goes against a stereotype he faces which is Hispanics are illiterate by, writing a book despite getting without help in his circumstances and writing becoming very popular throughout the years. As a result of his hard work he put into his stories and poems, thanks to one of his teachers Mrs. Baez, the stories and poems were edited and sent to many literary contests.

In paragraphs 10- 12 the tone the author was attempting to convey was a humorous and witty tone. The author is striving to make a point of how the lawyer is clever and funny by having him make a mockery of the situation. The use of vivid language also helps display the point. “There was a roar of laughter in the courtroom.” gave us a clear image of how the jury viewed the lawyers clever point. The authors used a phrase to show how ridiculous the trial was. The phrase "I lost track of time while I was boiling two bushels of corn and planting them in my field this morning." is to make sense of the previous statement made by the innkeeper, " and if those had hatched, I would have had ten chickens. They, too, would have laid eggs, and so on. I
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
This week’s reading had so many definitions to memorize. Although, it was interesting to learn about Euphemism and how it is suppose to be intended to spread positive attitude. Just by changing a few words can make the whole expression have a completely different outcome. For example, rather than saying a person has died, you can say departed to make the situation appear better. We use rhetorical devices like Euphemism, to make everything have positive results. While dysphemism is the complete opposite, it’s purposely used to produce a negative effect on someone’s attitude. Chapter four provided many rhetorical devices, which will help in writing better. After the dentist extracts the mayor’s tooth, Marquez ends his story shortly after the climax. The quick shift after the treatment is a technique used to portray how the mayor’s overall influence is infinite and everlasting. Though the dentist took advantage of the mayor for a brief period, the real control will always reside with the head of the town. This represents how this certain society is unfair. Only one person, in this case, has total authority.
