...y away from women, Norman seems to lusts after Marion, and “Mother” did not approve of it. Of course at the end of the film we discover that the mother is actually also Norman, who “transforms” into his mother whenever he experiences sexual desire for other women. Norman’s mother’s personality that consumed him would kill those who threatened to come between them. After listening to the manner in which Norman’s mother spoke to her son, Marion can't believe that Norman is traumatized so harshly by his mother and suggests he should break away from her. She overstepped her boundaries when she suggested Norman place his mom in an asylum. Marion insists that he can free himself from the traps that he feels have possessed him. The fact that Norman lusted Marion and Marion threatened the relationship between him and “mother’s” served purpose enough for her murder.
Grant Wiggins is the narrator of the novel. He was born in the plantation just outside of Bayonne, Louisiana. He lived there until he went away to college, and when he went back home, he was detached from the people in the town because of his education and different religious beliefs. He is easily angered and often very selfish. This is seen in the way that he acts towards Vivian. He consistently does not give her the attention or respect that she deserves. He refers to her children as simply, “the babies,” and only cares about the names of his and Vivian’s future children. Grant goes from shallow and selfish at the beginning of the story, to caring and loving at the end.
He falls in love with Elizabeth, his adopted sister, and all is well until his mother dies of Scarlet Fever. This tears him apart as they were very close and influences him and his future greatly. This leads him to Ingolstadt University where he is further influenced when he finds out that one of the professors there has also experimented with creating life. He uncovers the truth and ignoring all warnings, begins making his creature from the parts of dead bodies.
