In the story A Rose for Emily I did not find Emily’s character to be fully twisted or grotesque. In my eyes I found her to be someone who took her fathers word very highly no matter what anyone says. Though she might have had some weird fantasy, she definitely went through a lot, which probably played a factor in some of her decisions in life. You definitely can find Emily’s character to be looked at as sympathetic. Faulkner says certain things to show sympathy for Emily. Not only just her father passing showed Emily to be a sympathetic character, she also gets sick and could never find love. Due to Emily taking her father words very highly, she couldn’t find love because her father felt as if know one was good enough for his daughter. Emily
didn’t really have a support system behind her to help her overcome everything she was going through. For example, when everyone in town had seen Emily the summer after her father had passed, “ she carried her head high enough – even when she believed that she was fallen.” Faulkner to me was trying to show that everyone expected her to be depressed and sad, but she was able to keep her head up.
William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily tells a story of a young woman who is violated by her father’s strict mentality. After being the only man in her life Emily’s father dies and she finds it hard to let go. Like her father Emily possesses a stubborn outlook towards life, and she refused to change. While having this attitude about life Emily practically secluded herself from society for the remainder of her life. She was alone for the very first time and her reaction to this situation was solitude.
William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is a story that uses flashbacks to foreshadow a surprise ending. The story begins with the death of a prominent old woman, Emily, and finishes with the startling discovery that Emily as been sleeping with the corpse of her lover, whom she murdered, for the past forty years. The middle of the story is told in flashbacks by a narrator who seems to represent the collective memory of an entire town. Within these flashbacks, which jump in time from ten years past to forty years past, are hidden clues which prepare the reader for the unexpected ending, such as hints of Emily's insanity, her odd behavior concerning the deaths of loved ones, and the evidence that the murder took place.

The story is based on the life of Emily Grierson and how it connects with the South after the Civil War. There are many parts in the story that show symbolism in varieties of ways. Some of these symbols include Emily's house, her hair, her clothing, and even the "rose" that is brought in the story. Symbolism is shown throughout many different ways through all forms of literature. It is mainly shown through the main theme as well as the smaller themes that are throughout the story. Symbolism is used to represent ideas or qualities through the use of symbols.
Emily Grierson, referred to as Miss Emily throughout the story, is the main character of 'A Rose for Emily,' written by William Faulkner. Emily is born to a proud, aristocratic family sometime during the Civil War; Miss Emily used to live with her father and servants, in a big decorated house. The Grierson Family considers themselves superior than other people of the town. According to Miss Emily's father none of the young boys were suitable for Miss Emily. Due to this attitude of Miss Emily's father, Miss Emily was not able to develop any real relationship with anyone else, but it was like her world revolved around her father.
The essay that I´m going to do is about A Rose for Emily, which was written by William Faulkner and was it was his first work published in a national magazine. In the introduction of the essay I´m going to stablish the context in which we can find A Rose for Emily. It is a short story included in the collection called the Village, collection that also includes several works like DRY SEPTEMBER, HAIR OR THE EVENING SUN. The works in this collection have three things in common, the community, which as we are going to see a very important character as a whole, the solitude of human beings which in the case of Miss Emily is what makes us sympathize with this woman, but also is what makes us see her as a victim. Finally, something these works have in common is that they are built by the point of view of an uncommon narrator.
William Faulkner pioneered a largely philosophical literary style, which went on to influence for years. Unlike many writers of his time, Faulkner experimented with philosophical and psychological material as it applies to society. Although he created his own imaginary society, it was largely based off of actual people and ideas. Especially due to his uniqueness, Faulkner had his own ideas about writing, which he presented in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. In this speech he specifically stated that a writer’s duty is, “…to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.” (Nobel 829) Faulkner writes about his concern
Southern decadence was famous and iconic back when the story, "A Rose for Emily" was set. It was caused by the end of the Civil War and the forced change upon the antebellum south. Decadence defined the south before the Civil War, including obscene wealth and slavery, and the aristocracy, of which Emily and her father were a part, never had to lift a finger. Emily ends up not only in deep denial, making her able to disregard the reality of her life, but also causing the townspeople to participate in her denial as well. William Faulkner grew up in this southern and self-indulgent environment, making his outlook true to life, and well illustrated in this story.

Emily Geierson was once a cheerful and bright lady who turned mysterious and dark through a serious of tragic events. The lost of the two men, whom she loved, left Emily devastated and in denial. Faulkner used these difficulties to define Emily’s fascinating character that is revealed throughout the short story. In Faulkner’s tale “A Rose for Emily” there are many historical elements throughout the story; Faulkner uses them to give an authentic feel to the story and to add to the setting. A recurring theme that I found was reference to the reconstruction of the South after the Civil War. The setting of the South after their demise in the Civil War adds character to the story and to the characters. The attitudes people had and the way people treated Emily with respect was a tradition of the “Old South” that is presented throughout this tale.
While one of the most traditional interpretations of “A Rose for Emily” is the variety of meanings for the “rose” presented in the title and how the “rose” fits in with the story. Laura Getty states in her article many varied perspectives that many could ponder when identifying what the “rose” stands for. She states many possible theories that depict what the “rose” means, including theories of other writers that help support her own theory and also that adds another way that most might not consider at first. Most of the interpretations of the rose are all focused on the “internal elements” (Getty 231) rather than the actual rose itself. Getty theorizes about certain characters, buildings, anything that symbolizes a rose in the story as the possible meaning of the “Rose” in the title. As Getty states her own theories and those of scholars, she theorizes that “if these various symbols [Homer’s body, Emily’s state of mind, the narrator’s tribute] in the story are petals in the rose, it is important to note that the ‘Rose’ of the title gathers all of these references together in a way that moves beyond any one source” (231). This quote simply means that all of the symbols that have been derived from the story could be the petals to the “rose” that make up the actual rose itself. “The story is, after all, a literary construct, and it is constructed under the title, or in this case sub rose” (231) which is another position Getty states. However, since we do not actually know what the rose stands for, maybe that is how the author wants it to be: a secret kept in complete secrecy. Getty quotes Hendrickson who helps support Getty’s theory of sub rosa, saying:
Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet, in a short story once exclaimed, “Always! That is a dreadful word. It makes me shudder when I hear it. Women are so fond of using it. They spoil every romance by trying to make it last forever”. Stretching back eons, humans constantly search for love and romance, and it is the center of instrumental literature such as Romeo and Juliet. However romance and love isn’t built to last, and inescapably decays. Most individuals rebel against the thought that romance is unable to last forever, because the alternative is that one is truly alone in the cruel world. It is important to note that love and romance doesn’t always involve two human beings, one can feel love and romance for a nation, idea, or organization.
Through the use of setting, characterization and theme Faulkner was able to create quite a mysterious and memorable story. "A Rose for Emily" is more than just a story though; her death represents the passing of a more genteel way of life. That is much more saddening than the unforgettable scene of Homer's decaying body. The loss of respect and politeness is has a much greater impact on society than a construction worker who by trade is always trying to change things. Generation after generation Miss Emily happily escaped modernism by locking herself in her house the past.
