There are many important symbols in The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho. The first important symbol is the oasis. The oasis is an important symbol in the book because it represents love. The story states that, “The boy couldn’t believe what he was seeing: the oasis, rather than being just a well surrounded by a few palm trees - as he had see once in a geography book - was much larger than many towns back in Spain. There were three hundred wells, fifty thousand date trees, and innumerable colored tents spread among them… They were surrounded by children, curious to look at the animals and people that were arriving. The men of the oasis wanted to know if they had seen any fighting, and the women competed with one another for access to the cloth and precious stones brought by the merchants” (p. 90). This piece of text evidence supports that the oasis is an important …show more content…
Urim and Thummim are an important symbol in the book because they represent the omens. Santiago wanted to know if he was going to find his treasure or not by asking a man in Tangier, so the story states that, “He stuck his hand into the pouch, and felt around for one of the stones. As he did so, both of them pushed through a hole in the pouch and fell to the ground. The boy had never even noticed that there was a hole in his pouch. He knelt down to find Urim and Thummim and put them back in the pouch But as he saw them lying there on the ground, another phrase came to his mind. ‘Learn to recognize omens, and follow them,’ the old king had said” (p. 44). This piece of text evidence supports that Urim and Thummim are an important symbol in the book because it shows that Urim and Thummim can tell omens. Urim and Thummim are a part of the significance of the book because they can represent multiple omens while telling them to people and without these stones, Santiago wouldn’t have been able to find multiple omens across the
One symbol appears throughout chapter three, the turtle. It is a symbol for the migrants and how some people will go out of their way to knock them down, “the driver saw the turtle and swerved to hit it” simply because they want to, they want to feel like they are powerful (Steinbeck 22). However, some of the people go out of their way to avoid hurting the migrants, “she saw the turtle and swung to the right, off the highway, the wheels screamed and a cloud of dust boiled up” because they know that it would be immoral to hurt something, although they have more power (Steinbeck 22). Another example of a symbol is Rose of Sharon’s pregnancy, it holds new life for the family, except when the baby is born it is “a blue shriveled little mummy” that “‘Never breathed’ said Mrs. Wainwright softly. ‘Never was alive.’” symbolizing how the Joads never really had a chance (Steinbeck 603). They believe in their hearts that they persevere throughout their trials, but in the end they realized their certain doom as soon as they left for California, maybe even
The Pigman by Paul Zindel is a book that has many symbols, and means of those symbols can be explained to the farthest extent. This will talk about some of the many symbols that are used in this story.
The presence of symbolism throughout the novel is undeniable. Each of the symbols in the work are representative of a certain aspect of the characters lives. Dreams showed readers the desire of characters to escape their realities. The twins that Senora Valencia gives birth to are clearly meant to represent the neighboring nations of Haiti and The Dominican Republic. Water is primarily symbolic of life and death, but in this case readers are expected to come to their own conclusions regarding the river. Using these symbols allows the author to make discrete yet important additions to her writing without disrupting the format of the novel. Aside from serving as a benefit to the authors writing style, they can also be seen as an artistic addition which brings the entire novel to a different level. The use of symbolism in The Farming of Bones is not only extraordinarily well written but also completely essential to the story as a whole.
...ic meanings that still are puzzling art historians today. Some of the key symbols that Stokstad points out in the text is the dove, representing the Holy Spirit; the white lilies as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. She also points out, two rather unknown symbols to the sacrilegious, the date of the Annunciation in signs of the zodiac on the floor, as well as the lone stained glass window that is symbolizing God rising above the three windows that are placed in the background behind Mary. These three windows represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a story about a band of patients in a mental ward who struggle to find their identity and get away from the wretched Nurse. As audiences read about the tale, many common events and items seen throughout the story actually represent symbols for the bigger themes of the story. Symbols like the fishing trip, Nurse, and electroshock therapy all emphasize the bigger themes of the story.
The triangle symbolizes hope. Jonas finds himself frustrated frequently in this film. The symbolism is very much present when Jonas kisses Fiona inside of the triangle waterfall structure and again when he is over the edge and finds the rocks shaped like a triangle. In the first instance Jonas is frustrated with the people in the community do to the fact that they are so blind to what is actually going on but once he is in the triangle, he finds peace and hope when he realizes Fiona listened to him and has feelings for him. The audience doesn’t realize that this symbolic until they put both instances together. The second example, the triangle brings him hope when he sees the triangle of rocks because he is one step closer to freeing the memories. Although this symbol is subtle, it is very significant to the
According to Reilly, the main purpose of the Olmec-style symbol system was to present a “visible charter for rulership within the Heartland”(6). In addition he explains, these symbols “allowed people who were literate in the symbol systems, no matter what their language, to recognize there rulers’ public proclamation of their supernatural power”(6). The best analogy that encapsulates what Reilly is saying is that these figures were used as political propaganda. Beyond the superficial level of political meaning the symbols and the figure itself held a great significance to the supernatural.
Now that it can be read by all, the symbols within it can be found, which makes the story easier to understand. Three examples of symbolism are the mead hall, Grendel's head and claw, and the Dragon's treasure trove.
From the very first chapter, symbolism is used often and carried throughout the story. Emphasis is put on some specific pieces of symbolism when they are used multiple times throughout the novel. Death, the danger of time, and animals are all heavily symbolized in J.K. Rowling’s, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

John Steinbeck uses symbolism to give alternate meanings to his short story “Chrysanthemums.'; A symbol is a device used to suggest more than its literary meaning. He uses these symbols to look further into the characters and their situations. The character Elisa has a garden, which is more than just a garden, and the chrysanthemums that she tends are more than just flowers. There are actions that she performs in the story, which also have other meanings.
There all represent something different, but are intertwined by the journey of our narrator, the Time traveler. Fire is a very important symbol in this book and is commonly shown, this quote further illustrated when the Timer Traveler says,"What a rare thing flame must be in the absence of man" (9,376).This means, it's people who make fire. The tools we have is one thing that sets us apart from other animals, and fire is one of our most important, and our oldest tool. The second important symbol is the White Sphinx, this idea is derived from greek mythology, the Sphinx asked a riddle and ate people who failed to answer it correctly. The Time traveller relates the riddle to find his time machine directly to the Sphinx, because if he does not solve the riddle he will die. This life or death situation is further explained by this quote "It seemed to me that I had happened upon humanity upon the wane. The ruddy sunset set me thinking of the sunset of mankind" (4.24).This quote implies there is a connection between the riddle of the Sphinx, and the Time Traveller observing the aging of the human
