Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” a nineteenth century play successfully uses symbolism to express many characteristics of Helmer’s life, together with the way that the main character Nora feels towards her marriage at the end of the play. Ibsen’s use of symbolism to convey about the social setting, including the harsh male-controlled Danish society, seen mostly in Torvald in the play and the role of women, signified mostly in Nora. These symbols act as foretelling before the tragic events at the end of the play, as they show the problems which lead to the demise of the Helmer’s ‘perfect’ family life.
The name of the play itself ‘A Doll’s House’ is symbolic in itself. In the Helmer’s household, as it reflects Nora’s position as the ‘doll’ in Torvald’s doll house. It is clear from this that Nora is seen by Torvald as an accessory or pet, which is simply for visual purposes—"The squander bird’s a pretty little creature, but she greets through an awful lot of money. It’s incredible what an expensive pet she is for a man to keep." Torvald’s constant referral to Nora as a small creature, such as ‘songbird’ and ‘little squirrel’ highlight her fragility and is also symbolic of the fact that he does not see her as his equal, and as something he is superior at. The play is set at Christmas so the presence of the Christmas tree is inevitable. The tree is symbolic of joy and celebration, much like Nora’s character. Conversely, the tree is most descriptive of Nora and Torvald’s marriage.

Finally, these symbols are all successful in conveying a modern domestic tragedy to the audience as they all prepare the audience for Nora’s ultimate decision at the end of the play. It is also because of this build up that creates a sense of catharsis as Nora leaves, which is vital in modern domestic tragedy.
At the end, the fact that a middle-class family is portrayed makes the entire series of events relatable to a modern audience and is effective in evoking a reaction and truly portrays the genre. The symbolism used shows the fatal flaw of the tragic heroine, the issues in society Ibsen wanted to be tackled and the death of an individual as well as the death of a family, therefore, conveying the key components of a modern domestic tragedy.

Nora clearly represents the doll of the house and Torvald's dehumanization of her is flagrant throughout the story. He relentlessly refers to his wife through the use of pet names such as "my little skylark" and "my helpless little squirrel." Throughout A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen illustrates through an intriguing story how a once infantile-like woman gains independence and a life of her own. Ibsen creates a naturalistic drama that demonstrates how on the outside Nora and Torvald seam to have it all, but in reality their life together is empty. Instead of meaningful discussions, Torvald uses degrading pet names and meaningless talk to relate to Nora. Continuing to treat Nora like a pampered yet unimportant pet, Torvald thoroughly demonstrates how men of his era treat women as insignificant items to be possessed and shown off. While the Helmer household may have the appearance of being sociably acceptable, the marriage of Torvald and Nora was falling apart because of the lack of identity, love, and communication.
