Recommended: Use of Symbolism
Symbolism Shield Project To create a shield that best represents who I am as a person, I had to dig through countless photos and memories that show me as a whole. From future goals, challenges, values, and my own identity, fitting all of those symbols onto one shield was a little difficult. However, I managed to accurately represent myself in this shield, and overall I believe that it shows a smaller, more condensed version of who I am as a person. The first of four sections on my shield represents the values aspect of myself. I value my family more than anything in the world, and I chose to take mementos and pictures from years past to accurately portray this. I have a picture of my parents on their wedding day, I have a picture of
me and my mom, and a picture of myself, my brother, and my sister. These pictures show the happiness and joy that my family brings me, regardless of fights or disagreements. The collage of these pictures allows me to show all of my family members while adding creativity to my shield. Family is the most important part of who I am as a person and it will always describe me. The second section on my shield represents my future dreams. My goal in life, in the next few months, is to begin attending Western Carolina University and join the class of 2021. I have already toured, found my roommate, and paid my deposits. When I first visited this college, I immediately fell in love with the whole campus and the school as a whole. Following my decision, this school and my future have become my life, and I eagerly await move-in day on August 18th. Western Carolina is a part of who I am and who I hope to become in the upcoming months, and I take pride knowing that I am a future Catamount. The third section on my shield represents my challenges. Ever since I can remember, I have swam competitively, beginning with a summer league and slowly transitioning to larger teams, like the swim team here at Piedmont High. I love to swim, and most of my life is based largely on that basis. I was the senior captain of our high school’s swim team this year, and I took great pride in that. I love being in the water and competing at meets throughout the season. Swimming is always challenging for me, because there are times I can do better, and times I have achieved what I have worked hard for. Overall, swimming is a large part of who I am today, and accurately represents my personality and who I am. Finally, the fourth section on my shield represents my identity. For the past two summers, I have been a lifeguard in Indian Trail, in the Village of Lake Park. I love my job as head guard, and as the job has provided income for me throughout the past two years, it is something I enjoy to do. I worked a lot over the summers, especially while working between 40 and 50 hours per week this past summer. I enjoy my coworkers and the patrons of the pool, and I eagerly await this upcoming season at the pool. To conclude, being a lifeguard describes my identity today and shows who I am and what I am like as a human being and distinguishes me from others. In conclusion, everyone is different from one another in various ways, and I believe that my shield shows the ways that I am my own person. From attending college in the upcoming months to working during the past summers at the pool, I am a unique individual who can be represented in many interesting ways. I am my own person and I believe that my shield portrays this as best as possible.
As probably the best courtroom dramas of the twentieth century, Inherit the Wind is based on the famous, Scopes Monkey Trial. The play was printed virtually thirty years afterward and takes original authority in varying the true-life elements of the court case. The central conflict of the play is based on the Scopes Monkey Trial itself. Several themes are presented throughout the play, for example when Brady argues for religious values while Drummond argues for natural values and freedom of thought. The definition of a theme is an implicit or recurrent idea. We also see a theme of man versus society, furthermore, Bertram Cates versus the small town of Hillsboro. A third theme is appearance versus reality, or the difference between outward pretext and the basic truth. There are also quite a few symbols all the way through the play. A symbol is something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible. A symbol can also be an image that has multiple interpretations. For instance in Inherit the Wind, the small town mentality concept is greatly represented. The widespread significance of the court case is symbolized by the radio broadcast during the trial. External beauty is also significant when it is symbolized by the means of the rocking horse we learn about from Drummond's childhood. During the decade of the Scopes Monkey Trial, the conflict of evolution and the bible has massive relevance to the municipal and philosophical surroundings.
Set in the “not-too-distant future,” GATTACA, directed by Andrew Niccol, shows us a society where DNA determines your status. The film explores the significant idea of discrimination which is shown through Vincent’s character. The director’s use of techniques helped influence my understanding of the consequences of discrimination within society. Society discriminates against “in-valids” because they believe invalids aren’t as good as valids.

Throughout the novel, the reader is presented with various symbols. The symbols are clearly made evident by Holden’s constant repetition of their importance. The symbols are so important and their symbolism is directly related to the major themes of the novel.
In The Veldt, Ray Bradbury uses symbolism and repetition to foreshadow and reveal hidden messages that will help the reader better understand the story. Throughout his writing, important details are repeated to give hints of what is to come. Some argue that descriptive language is the most significant craft used. Although Bradbury does use a great deal of descriptive language, it doesn’t lead the reader to the moral of the story. Symbolism also plays a big part in The Veldt. It allows the reader to dig deeper into the story and recognize what certain objects represent.
In the dystopian novel, Brave New World, Huxley uses symbols to create meaning and to get his agenda across. The use of sex and reproduction, and Shakespearian writing and religious texts, as symbols in the novel help to push Huxley’s agenda that total government control is devastating, and the inner human drive to be an individual can never be suppressed. Also, the fact that the novel was written in 1931 shows that Huxley was attacking the newly forming Socialist nations.
Chapter three of the text, Inside Social Life by authors Cahill, Sandstrom and Froyum; discusses the importance of symbolism and how each individual within society comprehends the realities which surround them. Humans have the capacity to relate, internalize and interpret in their own words; the objects they visualize, smell, taste, hear and see on a daily basis. The chapter discusses how symbolism helps regulate human life and activity; alongside forming cohesion and stability within society. For example, if humans stayed at the level of sensation, experiencing everything around them; soon all would become overwhelmed and utterly distracted. (Sandstrom, 2014). This short paper will aim to critique and analyze author Sandstroms’ chapter on Symbols and the Creation of Reality. Discussed within the paper will be points which to the reader are deemed as ones of great value; in conjunction with points which may have brought the chapter to lose its major emphasis.
The Odyssey relates to the poem “Ithaka” through symbolism. Poseidon and the cyclops represent obstacles to overcome in life. When Odysseus first arrives to the island of the cyclops, he is curious to see this beast so he takes 12 of his best fighters and leaves. This is how he prepares for his obstacles. To achieve your goals you must overcome obstacles and try to prepare your best for them. At first he was curious to see this beast but only to be trapped by it in a cave with his men. Two of Odysseus’s men are eaten by the beast, but Odysseus recognizes that the beast is all outward power, meaning strong but stupid. Odysseus and his men are then trapped in the beast's cave and Odysseus plots his escape. Homer demonstrates how clever he is because he knows not to kill the beast in the cave otherwise him and his men would be trapped there forever. So when the cyclops had returned to the cave and removed the boulder blocking it that set the plan into place. Odysseus at first tells the cyclops that he has no name he now tells the beast that his name is Nobody. Odyssey then proceeds to offer the best wine and they catch him off guard and him and his men stab him in the eye. As the beast screams for help other beasts
Nguyen, Amanda. Hood History, Period 5 28 October 2016 Alter-Ego Biography Project I chose to read about Martin Luther King Jr. because he is a symbolic icon. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His name was actually Michael King along with his father, but it was changed to Martin Luther when he was around five years old. He spent his childhood in the Auburn Avenue neighborhood.
Iconography, in art history, the study of subject matter in art. The meaning of works of art is often conveyed by the specific objects or figures that the artist chooses to portray; the purpose of iconography is to identify, classify, and explain these objects. Iconography is particularly important in the study of religious and allegorical painting, where many of the objects that are pictured—crosses, skulls, books, or candles, for example—have special significance, which is often obscure or symbolic.
Color is used very effectively as a tool of symbolism in Heart of Darkness. Colors, especially black and white, are used to symbolize evil (black) and good (white). Other colors are also used, although less often than black and white. Throughout the story, people are thought to have white souls or black souls depending on their innate “goodness” or “badness” or the role they are fulfilling at the time. The color of a person’s soul is often contrasted to the color of their skin. A black- souled, white-skinned person is thought to be evil and dishonest. “I met a white man in such an unexpected elegance of getup…” (Conrad p.21). This demonstrates how a white man was not expected to be a good person. Elegance of dress was unexpected because the man was white. In comparison, a white-souled, black-skinned person is thought to be truthful and full of integrity. “An athletic black belonging to some coast tribe and educated by my poor predecessor….thought all the world of himself.” (Conrad p.45). People are described as black with hatred regardless of skin color. This is further evidence of black being used synonymously with evil. Black isn’t just used to describe evil people. “Often far away, I thought of these two, guarding the door of Darkness, knitting black wool as for a warm pall…” (Conrad p. 14.) The symbolism of black wool at the door of Darkness is clearly pointing to evil, and further supports black as evil. Heath 2 Colors other than black and white are used to describe moods and attitudes past the basic good and evil. Red signifies industry. “There was a vast amount of red - good to see at any time because one knows that some real work is done in there.” (Conrad p.13). Yellow is seen as a cowardly color. “I was going into the yellow. Dead in the center.” (Conrad p.13). Pale denotes Death. It is also used this way in the Bible, “the Pale horse and his rider Death”, Revelations 6:8. “She came forward, all in black, with a pale head, floating towards me in the dusk. She was in mourning. It was more than a year since his death…” (Conrad p. 72-73). The use of color is effective in the story for a variety of reasons. First, it is easy to understand.
The book The Other Side is about a black girl who sees a white girl sitting on a fence almost every day. The black girls name is Clover while the white girls name is Anne. Clover asked Anne, “why are you sitting on the fence.” “You can see everything from up here.” Anne replied. The fence separated whites from blacks. Clover and Anne’s mothers said you can’t go across the fence.
The logo represents a combination of self-perception and social-perception. Although they represent my diversity, the whole emblem links up in a chain like structure. The steps to creating the logo, the outcome, and what I plan to, or hope to do with my logo helped my understanding to who I am as a person.
In O’Connor’s short story, “The Misfit”, a grandmother, her son, and his wife and children go on a family field trip. There is a criminal on the loose but the family decides to proceed with their plans anyway. The criminal is called the Misfit, and as with the rest of the story, this is full of irony. The thwarted family road trip might symbolize the choices a person makes and the consequences they bring.
