“The founding fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the Bald Eagle as the emblem of the nation. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America” –John F. Kennedy (Home). Bald Eagles have a unique way of living that makes them a strong symbol of the United States.
First, the Eagle has certain traits about it that makes it such a unique and majestic bird. The bird’s Latin name is the Haliaeetus Leucocephalus which translates to “Sea Eagle with a white head” (Bald). As far as the bird goes, it has a life span of about 30 years living at the top of the food chain. An Eagle has a few weapons for hunting that make them a dangerous predator. Those weapons include the beak and talons which are both made from the substance human fingernails are made of; Keratin. The beak has a hook at the tip which is used for tearing, which creates a “scissor effect”. The talons are a powerful weapon, yet they are delicate enough to groom and feed their young. Talons are also used to kill the Eagle’s prey by penetrating its fle...
In 1776 the United States of America became a great nation, free from Britain's rule. We became a nation full of freedom and opportunity, symbolized by many great icons. The Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, this great nations capitol, the District of Columbia, and the greatest of these icons, our American Flag. Our flag symbolizes to the world our strength, determination, and the rights and freedoms of our people. The very sight of it has given men the courage and willingness to sacrifice their own lives in order to protect what it symbolizes. But where did it come from? For more than a century it has been disputed by historians that the story of Betsy Ross, a widow from Philadelphia could be given the honor of handcrafting the first American Flag. So is it fact or a delightful fable that has weaved its way in as part of our American history?
Logos is the sense of reason. The Declaration of Independence has a whole list of things that the king did wrong. One such crime the
“Land of the free and the home of the brave.” This line has represented the United States for decades. These words were captured in The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key and since 1913, the United States has adopted The Star-Spangled Banner as its national anthem. We have used the Red, White, and Blue as one of our nation’s symbols. It has fifty stars, to represent the number of states we have in our Union. The military pledges its allegiance to the flag and the country which it represents at all costs. We are the land of the free and the home of the brave, and we are proud to show it.
The Awakening and “Mad Men” both utilize birds as symbols of freedom to contrast with the constrainment of Edna and Betty’s lives. The birds are initially caged, similar to how Edna and Betty were first kept under control as housewifes by their husbands, but when the doors to the bird cage were opened, the birds were able to fly free. When Edna and Betty had an opportunity for independence, they were unable to move on the ground. Birds in both the Awakening and “Mad Men” symbolize the freedom and independence Edna Pontellier and Betty Draper yearn for, yet are unable to attain which highlights the immobilization of women in society.
...o captivating. Additionally, it does make an extensive number of appearances at various ceremonies and great events, such as the opening ceremonies of sporting events and national holidays such as Independence and Memorial Day. However, “The Star Spangled Banner” embodies a much broader and more abstruse, cryptic connotation. It illustrates America’s attitude of perseverance when facing seemingly indomitable adversities or unachievable ambitions. It represents America’s unfaltering faith, traditional values, and ethical laws that have come to characterize America’s individuality. It signifies America’s past, a historic reminder that unites the people and instills, in their hearts, a profound sense of patriotism and glory. Most of all, “The Star Spangled Banner” symbolizes the truth of what America truly means–“the land of the free and the home of the brave”.
What is the American flag and what does it represent? For many Americans the flag represents freedom, pride, and justice. Our flag stands for freedom because of the many lives that had to be lost throughout history for us to be the nation we are today. The American flag stands for pride because of the many American soldiers men and women who lost their lives for us. The bald eagle was finally adopted as the emblem of the United States in 1787 because "its long life, great strength, and majestic looks, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent." The bald eagle has survived for many years. It was almost lost at one point, and finally now is on its way back and the numbers are rising thanks to many efforts by various foundations. The Bald Eagle is more than a just a bird like every other species it too has a special part in keeping the food chain going.
The American Flag may not look like much but it stands for the loyalty that every citizen in America has for their country. It resembles many people's love for the place they live. It also stands for the knowing that many people would die fighting for our nation. People have been loyal since America was founded and there will always be somebody that will pass on that loyalty to the flag. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (90). Although the title of the novel has little literal connection to the actual storyline, it holds a huge amount of symbolic weight in this tale of innocents wounded by the evil surrounding them. The ‘mockingbird’ represents various characters in the novel that are harmed one way or another, particularly by the judgmental, prejudiced ways of the Maycomb townsfolk. Throughout the course of the book, the innocence they once had is destroyed, figuratively ‘killing’ the mockingbirds.
The American flag has produced different reactions in people. Here are some people’s opinions; President Woodrow Wilson expressed in 1917. “This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thoughts and purpose as a nations.” John Lindsey, former New York
To Kill A Mockingbird is a bildungsroman novel by Harper Lee. In this novel there are many important and striking symbols. The repeated image of the mockingbird creates a strong and highly effective motif. Harper Lee first introduces the mockingbird to the reader in Chapter 10, when Atticus refuses to teach Scout and Jem how to shoot saying, ‘Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird’. Harper Lee emphasises Scout’s curiosity at her non-judgemental father expressing it is a ‘sin’ to do something, as she consults Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie tells Scout that, ‘Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.’ Harper Lee allows the reader to explore this motif through the use of characters in the novel and the prejudice and morally wrongdoings in the fictional town of Maycomb.
