The French film Rosetta, uses symbolism as a conduit to portray the cover up of a shameful life, and the laborious struggle to burrow to a normal life with no light at the end of the tunnel. Although Rosetta loves her very much, anguish is augmented by the unprecedented lifestyle of her inebriated mother. Rosetta is steadfast to keep a real job, and loses her only friend in the process of doing so. Through trials and tribulations she realizes that a normal life consists of much more than a job and the cloaking of her family and paucity. Physically, Rosetta is extremely tough, but emotionally she is a timorous. Her story begins with her termination at a factory. She pleads with her boss and begins kicking and screaming. I was aware of Rosettas shame when she got off the bus. She crossed roads and crawled through bushes to enter her trailer park from the back. Dress shoes were exchanged for mud boots expressing the paltry standards of her home. She slipped through a homemade opening in the fence as if to sneak past the eyes of normal society. The maternal inefficiencies of her mother were exposed with an argument over here intoxication. Rosetta knows that her mother slept with the landlord for some liquor. The ideals of a normal life are further shattered as they duel over a fish given to her mother by the same landlord. Rosetta puts her pride before begging and food for that matter. Rose Mary is a selfish woman and decides not to go to school some mornings because she does not feel up to it. Jeannette takes the initiative in making sure that her mother is prepared for school each morning because she knows how much her family needs money. Even though Rose Mary starts to go to school every day, she does not do her job properly and thus the family suffers financially again. Introduction Gattaca is an American science fiction (sci-fi) film directed by Andrew Niccol in the year 1997. In this story, people are divided into two races: they comprise of the Valid, which are born with superior genes, and the Invalid, which are born naturally with normal genes, they are also seen as inferior to Valid. The protagonist of the film, Vincent, born as an invalid is granted the identity of Valid from Jerome, who is half paralyzed to fight against discrimination in the civilization and fulfilling his dream. The director uses bars as significant symbolic barriers which represent how discrimination affects people in a society. In the earlier scenes of the film Vincent is seen in the shower, there are some bars which represent that Vincent is trapped in the discrimination of society.
Light, especially fire, and darkness are significantly reoccurring themes in Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag, the main character, is a fireman, but in this futuristic world the job description of a fireman is to start fires wherever books are found; instead of putting them out. Montag takes a journey from a literary darkness to a knowledgeable light. This journey can be compared to the short story Allegory of the Cave by Plato, in which a prisoner experiences a similar journey. An example of light, in reference to knowledge, occurs just after Montag meets Clarisse for the first time. "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing" (9). Since Montag had rarely seen that many house lights on, I interpreted those lines as saying "that house is full of knowledge and enlightenment; not like the rest of the houses around here which are always dark." Clarisse went on to explain to Montag that her mother, father, and uncle were just sitting around and talking. This was also something that wasn't very commonplace in the city. Fire is an important element of symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. Fire consumes minds, spirits, men, ideas, and books. Fire plays two very different roles in this book. The role of a destructive, devouring, and life ending force, and the role of a nourishing flame.
Set in the “not-too-distant future,” GATTACA, directed by Andrew Niccol, shows us a society where DNA determines your status. The film explores the significant idea of discrimination which is shown through Vincent’s character. The director’s use of techniques helped influence my understanding of the consequences of discrimination within society. Society discriminates against “in-valids” because they believe invalids aren’t as good as valids.
William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" hold numerous similarities. Both stories show the influences of society and the slow decay on a particular woman. The title of each piece becomes important to the plot and ultimate outcome. In several ways, each title takes shape to portray symbolism in one sense or another. The references to color identify contradictory messages to those who have not heard of these stories, while the title itself takes physical form and is "living" at some point in the piece.

William Faulkner's, "A Rose for Emily," is a short story that is narrated by an anonymous character to be considered as the voice of the home town and tells the story out of order. The story is based on the life of Emily Grierson and how it connects with the South after the Civil War. There are many parts in the story that show symbolism in varieties of ways. Some of these symbols include Emily's house, her hair, her clothing, and even the "rose" that is brought in the story. Symbolism is shown throughout many different ways through all forms of literature. It is mainly shown through the main theme as well as the smaller themes that are throughout the story. I started watching movies of Al Pacino when I got serious enough about films. The first movie which I saw was ‘Scarface’. It really opened my eye as to what impact, communism could have on a young rebellious delinquent completely altering the course of his life. The movie was full of violence with overt drug and sexual indulgence, but the part which was really amusing is the caricature of the character. It is almost like a dynamite waiting to explode any second. The making of the character; truly symbolizes the personality of a Cuban revolutionist .His acting uncovered a craft which looked so unique and unrivalled. It is only then, that I started watching his films with more interest.

Miss.Strangeworth never gave any of her roses away, although the tourists often asked her for roses. The roses belonged on many pleasants streets and it bothered Miss.Strangeworth to think that many people would be wanting to carry them away.She was a very stingy old lady who would never give any single rose away. Though the film is abundant in techniques, the prevalence of contrasting characterisation and symbolism allows Niccol to explore and emphasise the respective ideas of the burden of perfection, conformity versus freedom and achieving one’s dreams to the audience.
