First of all, The Final Four by Paul Volponi was a great book for me because I like playing basketball and also like watching March Madness and this book made it an intense game between the Michigan State Spartans and Troy University Trojans and I imagined that I was actually in the stadium watching the game. So after I was done reading my book there was a lot of literary devices, but the one that feels important and stands out more to the book is symbolism. The symbol of this book are the characters and these characters stand out as a symbol, like the sun shining out during the day. The main important characters are Malcolm McBride, Roko Bacic, Crispin Rice and Michael Jordan and these people show a meaningful symbol in the story.
First, Malcolm McBride who is a freshman point guard for the Michigan State Spartans and is from Detroit, Michigan and plays street ball for a living. Being at Detroit, Malcolm didn’t really live in a very nice house and so he had to work hard to support his family and he really cares about his sister who passed away, so he always wants the ball all the time (Ball Hog) to make his sister proud. Malcolm symbolises what could happen when tragedy strikes but

you keep everything in the inside. It means that for him that it was a tragedy that his sister passed away, but he had the keep that sad emotion inside and put his head in the game and do it for her sister. In reality, if you have a total melt down before or during a game, don’t let it get it in your head or else you will lose focus. Also, a character named Michael Jordan, not like the All-Star Player Michael Jordan from the NBA, is a junior for the Michigan State Spartans as well, same as being a street baller but not in Detroit.
He is a meaningful character to his team and he symbolizes that patience is the key to success and that when an opportunity comes don’t let it pass by you. So this symbol means that in the story, Michael Jordan says that he mostly never misses a shot for his team. This is because Michael Jordan has the patience when to shoot the ball, not when you get the ball and then shoot right away, and when he has that patience he finds an opportunity to make a shot, in which he does. So patience and opportunity is an important symbol relating MJ and to people who play basketball or any other
sport. Next, is a character name Roko Bacic who plays for the Troy University Trojans and is their best defender during games. Roko Bacic is from Croatia and he moved to the United States because there is a civil war going on in his country and so he went to live in the U.S with his Uncle Drazen. When Roko and Uncle Drazen came in to live at the US, Roko already started practicing basketball with his Uncle Darzen and he teached Roko how to play good defense during a game and he wants to play basketball because to show pride for his parents and his country, Croatia. He is an important character to symbolize because he symbolizes that it takes more than one to accomplish any goal that is big or small. It means in the story, Roko wants to accomplish his goal by winning the March Madness for his country and family, but it doesn’t take one thing which is himself as being a good basketball player to accomplish it, there are many things to accomplish his goal like believing and trusting yourself and your team, make yourself accountable, and seeking out challenges (Facing Michigan State Spartans). Last, we have a character named Crispin Rice who never backs down, good at grabbing rebounds, plays good defense, and also plays for the Troy University Trojans and who is from a town called Vinemont, Alabama. After when he hit the buzzer beater to win the game and advanced to the Final Four, he proposed to a Trojan Cheerleader named Hope Daniels. Roko Bacic is a character that symbolizes that you shouldn’t rush into things. This means in the story, when Roko and Hope are engaged, Roko took their relationship to fast. For example in the story, Roko would always hurry and leave basketball practice early when it’s March Madness just because to see Hope and telling Hope that they should get an apartment. But then Roko realized to take things slow with Hope and knowing that there is time and it is not the end the world. In Conclusion, these four important characters show and have a meaningful symbol and that each symbol had a great point referring to the players during the story. Also for me as a basketball player, I can refer to these lessons that the players had when I play basketball too. Citation: Volponi, Paul. The Final Four. Viking, a member of Penguin Group Inc, 2012
African-American players are often negatively affected due to the prevalence of racism in the town. Ivory Christian, for instance, is a born-again Christian with aspirations to be a famous evangelist, but he is unable to pursue his dream due to his commitment to the football team. Because of this, the townspeople have unrealistic expectations of him and assume that he will put all his time and energy into football. Furthermore, there is a greater pressure on him to succeed...
Michael Jordan, in his prime, was thought of as one of the greatest basketball champions of all time. A shooting guard, standing at six-six, Jordan was able to out play anyone in his position. He started his career at the University of North Carolina, where he helped his team win a national championship. He then was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984-85 season. While playing for the Bulls, Jordan received many awards such as, MVP, five championships, Olympic gold medals, slam dunk contests, and many more defensive and offensive awards. Jordan simply dominated the nineties and left the game as a NBA Finals winner in 1998.
Your dreams of being someone may not turn out the way you think they will. The documentary Hoop Dreams is a story about two boys from the ghetto that want to play in the NBA. Arthur ¨Man”Agee goes to Marshalls and William Gates goes to St. Joseph’s which are both situated in Illinois, where their dreams of becoming a pro basketball player vanished. Both of the boys face obstacles that are outside of themselves. Arthur´s family struggled with money, education, and pressure from others hurts him. Also, William struggled with balancing his family with basketball, the pressure from others, and education.
The poem is narrated in a limited third person perspective of a player that gains possession of the basketball after a rebound. The poet focuses the narrative on the actions directly following him gaining possession of the basketball. The determination the poet feels to keep the ball in his team’s possession and make a shot is felt strongly through the poem’s lines 3-7:
The picture I chose is a very deep picture, it is Michael Jordan's first National Basketball Association Championship that had eluded him for the previous seven years. He was the most valuable player in this championship series which means a lot to any professional player who wins it. His father, James, is the other man in this picture, showing great pride in his son knowing all of the hard work he put into this championship and his career. Even though he struggled to win the trophy, he is overwhelmingly happy and expresses great triumph.
Michael Jordan, what comes to your mind when you hear that name? Michael had played for the bulls and had gotten 6 championship rings with the team. Well, is it just me or does that sound like a lot of time in the game of basketball? In 1982 he took a big step up from highschool to college, where he wanted to pursue the basketball dream. He went to college at North Carolina where he played NCAA basketball for just one year before he was drafted in 1984. All eyes were on him when he went on the court, because that just how good he was at the game of basketball. Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in NBA history, maybe even the greatest of all time.
To conclude, the poem “Ex-Basketball play,” is a poem that shows the reality of life. It reflects the nature of life in the real world and it helps people who have a dream and want to pursue their goals to go for it. The poem was formally organized and provides a number of figurative languages that helps to bring out tone of the poem.
Thesis Statement: Michael Jordan set records and has set the example of what the greatest basketball player can accomplish and really set the standards of what a hall of famer basketball player looks like.
Jamal Wallace is introduced in the film as a typical black teenage male who goes to a low class school in the Bronx and really excels on the court as a basketball player. He always plays basketball with his friends in the parking lot. Jamal is dared to go into the apartment of a recluse who watches them play through binoculars. Jamal is caught, running away in fright. Not too many people thought of him as being anything more than that, due to the fact that Jamal makes mediocre grades in his school in the Bronx, he does just enough to get by and to maintain a “C” average.
Jordan helped revolutionize the game of basketball, the marketing brand of the NBA, and became one of the most recognizible humans on the face of the Earth. Through the Civil Rights movement, America's involvement in the Cold War, and a period of transition in America, Michael Jordan entered the NBA at a time of cultivation. All the hard work that Jordan did through his life, and all the hard work society did to progress as a whole colloborated in the 1980's, and allowed Michael Jordan to become a revolutionary. Michael Jordan is an iconic symbol of not just basketball, but American change and progress and it's influence throughout the world.
When I began my report I didn’t know much about Michael Jordan, but I did know that he was “undoubtedly the greatest player in the history of the NBA'; (“Michael Air Jordan'; 1). It seemed like every time I heard the word basketball I also heard the name Michael Jordan. There’s just no avoiding him. If you are watching television you might see him playing basketball or golf. If you were reading a magazine there will probably be an advertisement with his picture. If you were walking down the street you might see a kid wearing Air Jordan shoes or a Bulls jersey with “JORDAN'; on the back of it. This man is probably as recognizable as the Pope.
In almost every story, one can find symbolism throughout the text to help the reader better understand what the writer wants the reader to takeout from his/her story. Symbolism is something that must be analyzed and explored to experience a deeper meaning to the story. Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. In some instances, symbolism can leave a reader to ponder what the writer is trying to express with the symbolism used in the story; for symbolism can be interpreted differently and can have many layers of meaning to it. Some good examples of short stories that use symbolism to extend the meaning behind the story line are “The Lottery,” “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” and “The Jury of Her Peers”.
