From Fire to Ash: A closer look at "Smoke Signals" and "This Is What It Means to Say Pheonix Arizona" Sherman Alexie's literature often uses symbolic features relating to Native American culture. His characters tell their stories while Alexie tells his own story simultaneously. His 1993 short story, This is What It Means to Say Pheonix Arizona and later film adaption Smoke Signals focuses on two young native American men, Victor and Thomas on a journey to collect Victor's father's ashes. Throughout the journey, Victor reflects on previous events that relate to the death of his abusive father. In the first scene of Smoke Signals there is a flash back to when Arnold Joseph, Victor's father saves infant Thomas and Victor from a raging house fire that kills both of Thomas's parents. The flash back shows the fire that encompasses Victor started very early in his life. Thomas states, "You know, there are some children who aren't really children at all. They're just pillars of fire that burn everything they touch." (Smoke Signals) This comment vividly describes who Victor is as a human. A few scenes later you once again see the movie flash back to when Victor and Thomas were around ten years old. Thomas is giving Victor a hard time about his father leaving which results in Victor threatening to beat Thomas up again. In an interview with Sherman Alexie, Alexie states that, "The smoke that originates from the first fire in the movie is what causes these events, and the smoke from the second fire brings about the beginning of resolution." The first fire is the tragic house fire and the second fire is a fire that the healing figure of the movie starts in order to burn down the trailer Arnold Joseph lived in. The trailer's fire symbolizes letting go of all the pain Arnold Joseph caused in the world. It helps show that Victor is slowly letting go of the pain his father caused which in turn means the fire that burns within him is starting to smolder as
