Symbolism has been used for a long time throughout history. It is the practice of representing things by symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Moreover, two texts that show symbolism are ‘’eleven’’ and ‘’the sound of summer running’’ but one shows positive symbolism while the other shows negative. The text that shows positive symbolism is ‘’the sound of summer running’’. One reason for this is the main symbolizing object, the shoes represent happiness and joy. This supports chow the shoe gives Douglas, the main character of the text a solution to his problem of having no new shoes before summer, helping him resolve his conflict by having the joy to get the shoes he wanted. Another detail of how this story has positive symbolism is because it says ‘’it feels every summer when you take off your shoes for the first time and run in the grass. One detail supporting how this text shows negative symbolism is ‘’the red sweater’s still sitting there like a big red mountain.’’ This statement shows the sweater is a big problem for the main character Rachel symbolizing the mountain getting in her way. This statement also shows anger of Rachel as the sweater is described as red. That’s what the red sweater was symbolized by the main character. Another reason that can be sited in the text is ‘’Mrs. Price put the sweater on my desk, finally let’s go, and all of a sudden, I’m crying in front of everybody’’. This sentence shows the effects of the sweater and what it symbolized. As Rachel began to cry as an effect of the sweater becoming a conflict for her that didn’t get solved. It shows how the main character expresses what the sweater symbolized.
