Many love the way Bierce customs symbolism all throughout his story. Bierce uses Peyton Farquhar the protagonist of the story how his life is going. Peyton is a man who lives in Alabama who had done a crime, then again also while telling more less it he uses many situations of realism. Bierce shows us the way to turn objects into meaning and make our minds follow though his allusions. Not too many stories have so much symbolism like Ambrose Bierce uses in his short story. The way he can use a piece of rope from the noose to represent a snake showing similarly to make sense as Satan to which he had done a wrong thing. He practices symbolism all through the story to create foreshadowing. Many examples are used like how he says “a piece of dancing driftwood” referring to a joyful time in life. He imagines running home to his wife to go into her arms. Bierce was using the idea of Peyton’s wife as to take place as an allusion to heaven somewhere to be happy. He imagines seeing his wife, then he runs into her arms as soon as they meet the soldiers take his life. His last image he dies to be his wife, his happy place, his heaven. The story of “An Occurrence of out Creek Bridge” is a fascinating story using many literary techniques and foreshadowing to create the shock effect at the conclusion of the short story. Pulling the reader more in the story dragging you wonder what this entire means as he uses symbolism. Not all readers can compresence the realism to this amazing short story.
