goddess who was mother of the Earth. This alludes to the fact that The Golden One will be the mother to a new generation of freethinkers. Equality 7-2521 decides that his name will be Prometheus, after the god who brought humans fire and therefore light, but was punished for it. This alludes to the fact that Equality 7-2521 created the lightbulb and was exiled from the City. In this society they say the Unmentionable Times which alludes to the times before the Great Rebirth. Conflicts External Equality 7-2521 taking the light box to the scholars. Internal Equality 7-2521 falls in love with Liberty 5-3000 in a society where he was taught that loving or caring one person more than everyone else is a sin. Equality 7-2521 views International 4-8818 as a friend even though it isn’t allowed to like one person more than the rest. Characters Equality 7-2521/Prometheus Equality 7-2521 is the narrator and main character of Anthem. Throughout the novella he struggles to comply with the laws the City has, and breaks quite a few of them, and eventually leaves the society and discovers what it really mean to be individual. Liberty 5-3000 /Gaea Liberty 5-3000 is Equality 7-2521’s love interest in Anthem. She falls in love with him even though it is against the law, and she eventually runs away with him. Central Theme Identity “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great indivisible WE, One, indivisible and forever.” (1.8) In this novella no one is allowed to be individual. Everyone has to work together for the benefit of all of the Cities occupants and no one person is allowed to view themselves or others above the rest. “But it is a sin to give men names which distinguish them from other men.” (2.12) Names are banned in the City because they cause everyone to be individual and not a collective we. Loyalty “‘Give us your hand. Look ahead. It is our own world, Golden One, a strange unknown world, but our own.’ Then we walked on into the forest their hand in ours.” (9.22-23) Even though they are traveling to unknown territory Liberty 5-3000 trusts and is loyal enough to Equality 7-2521 to take his hand and go with him. “I am neither foe or friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. And to earn my love, my brothers must do more than to have been born. I do not grant my love without reason, nor to any chance passer-by who may wish to claim it. I honor men with my love. But honor is a thing to be earned.” (11.13) Equality 7-2521 decides that since he is no longer controlled by the rules of the society he will be loyal to those he wants to be loyal to and those who earn his loyalty. Society and class “We strive to be like our brother men, for all men must be alike” (1.7) In this society there are no classes or social pyramids, for everyone is equal and not above the rest.
People aren’t allowed to be different because if they’re different they could potentially be better than everyone else making them more important in society. “Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do what the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you.” (1.20) If the people in this society got to pick what job the wanted they could potentially be in a higher social position than everyone else, and that is not allowed. Freedom/Confinement “But what is freedom? Freedom from what? There is nothing to take a man’s freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else.” (12.15) Equality 7-2521 believes that freedom is being free from other people. He believes that to be free no other person can tell you what to do, say, or think. “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great indivisible WE, One, indivisible and forever.” (1.8) In this society no man is free to be themselves. Everyone is confined to be collective and and the

The book Anthem is a book that can be perceived many various ways. To me, Anthem is about an outstandingly smart young man, named Equality 7-2521
Anthem, by Ayn Rand is a classic novel about a man who struggles through life to try and show the positives about a life unknown, unlike the dark and wicked society that he lives in. It shows what collectivism can do to a society and how a community can not flourish without individual identities. Equality is shown as a extremely intelligent young man with great potential to the future of the society, but the Council of Vocations seems him in a different light. Looked down upon by everyone, Equality 7-2521 was given the job of Street Sweeper to make him equal to his fellow brothers and to erase any individuality he obtained.
Describing archetypes are an easy way to allow yourself to connect with the character of whatever book you're reading. Many authors use this method to develop their character. In the book “Anthem” by Ayn Rand the author talks in third person limited knowing the thoughts and feelings of Equality 7-2521. Ayn rand was a very intelligent author who was able to make Equality’s qualities very subtle, Equality goes through many big struggles; which bring out his archetypes. I depict Equality as a young individual, scholar, and rebellious man. These archetypes are shown in many ways, and are portrayed without a doubt, but it does take a keen eye to catch the foreshadowing and infasicsim.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
“For I know what happiness is possible to me on Earth. And my happiness needs no higher aim to vindicate it” (Rand 95). In this part of the novella, Equality, the narrator, is aware that he can find his own happiness and he should show it once it is found. Throughout the novella, Anthem written by Ayn Rand, Equality is trying to find himself in a society full of equals. As he discovers the tunnel, Equality creates a light bulb in which he wants to flaunt upon the people of his society. Subsequently, when it is rejected by the Council, he hides in the forest from those who see him as a betrayer. Equality tries to find himself in a collectivist society that he knows he does not belong in, in which he evolves. The author believes in objectivism,
Ayn Rand wrote Anthem as a critique of Communism, yet along with that she demonstrated her own belief system of individual ideals. Objectivism was aptly shown throughout the entire novella with the thoughts and actions of the main characters, Equality and Liberty in contrast with the universal thought of the city and society. Rand clearly showed her philosophy well in this story.
Ayn Rand, a contentious woman, the new favorite author to multiple people’s list. People who have read her magnificent book, Anthem, understand how exquisite and meaningful her words are. Books like Anthem are worth reading because it gives the reader more knowledge about controversial topics and it takes the reader to experience new places and new adventures. Equality, the main character, is a symbol. He represents many people today, living in countries like his society. Equality has to find his true identity first before helping the others. People are not allowed to believe in individualism, they should not have a identity of their own. Each person has a monotone routine to follow every single day of their lives. Each step a person takes
Ayn Rand’s Anthem is a politically satirical novel set in a future society that is so highly collectivized that the word “I” has been banned. The world is governed by various councils who believe that man’s sole reason for existence is to enforce the Great Truth “that all men are one and that there is no will save the will of all men together” (Rand, 20). Any indication of an individual’s independent spirit is swiftly and brutally put down, with the transgressors being punished with severe prison sentences or even death. It is this dysfunctional world that Equality 7-2521 is born into. The novel begins with Equality 7-2521 alone in a dark tunnel, transcribing his story.
The dystopia depicted in Anthem could quite easily be considered Ayn Rand’s commentary on society. It puts into perspective the downfalls of societal trends and putting others above oneself. The novella itself is a satire of Collectivism, which can be seen in examples of Communism. Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism includes ideas of immutable facts, rationalist mentality, self-prioritization, and a capitalist society (ARI, n.d.). Her ideas are shown in a variety of aspects throughout the novella. Oppression felt due to the collective mentality is the most prominent of the ideas shown. Another aspect that is important to note is Equality 7-2521’s natural tendency to struggle against the restrictions set upon
Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society.
Anthem is a book full to the brim of symbolism. Some of it is clear to see and others you have to really pay attention to capture. Anthem is not a hard book to understand, but it can still be difficult to grasp the full meaning of it. The meaning of which is elusive at points, slipping between your fingers and resting on the pages in plain view. Unity, we, I, Ego, it all plays a major part in this book along with the symbolism of things.
The word collectivism often makes people cringe. Overall, there is a general fear of not being able to make personal decisions in America. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, collectivism can be defined as; emphasis on collective rather than individual action or identity (“Collectivism”). In Anthem, Ayn Rand describes an extreme collectivist society. Although Anthem’s society seems extremely surreal, aspects of its collectivist society closely mirror today’s society.
Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen’” (Rand 21). This chant repeated by all men has influenced the thoughts of all within the society. Changing the thoughts to say you are not unique but you live only for your brothers. Language has influenced the men and women to not think for themselves but only for the society itself. “’You are not one of our brothers, Equality 7-2521, for we do not wish you to be. …nor are you one of our sisters’” (Rand 43). Equality and Liberty have both just changed how they are thinking and see that neither one is like the others. They both see past the ways they were taught to think and have started to think for themselves and see the changes in each other. Within a society of “We” these two people have found the “I” within themselves but have yet to find the real
One of the overarching conflicts in Ayn Rand’s, Anthem, is Collectivism versus the belief in Heresy. Rand is a firm believer in heresy, making her one of history's most notable heretics. In the same way Anthem is bias, so is my ‘Big Idea’ collage. I used propaganda and symbolic images to express the importance and just within heresy. The two silhouettes of a human heads serves the significance of the seemingly everlasting conflict that both groups have. All the images that make up the silhouettes is what the different parties stand for. Equality’s rebellious views and experiments, such as ‘the power of the sky’ and the sacred manuscripts, are enclosed within the traced head on the right side. On the other side, I dissected the authority in
In the novella Anthem written by the novelist and the philosopher Ayn Rand, a collectivist society is depicted throughout the entire story. The people of the society are taught from the time of their birth to consider others before themselves. They are not to be prideful of themselves or of their own uniqueness. The goal of the society is for all of the people within its control to be relatively simple, low-minded people who just go through the routine set by the higher authority without question. Any person who stands out from the others is considered to be cursed and evil. The higher authority of the society, the Council, forbids people from using the word “I” when pertaining to themselves because that brings a sense of individualism that is forbidden.
