Sweatshops campaign Sweatshops are factories mainly in developing countries such as Bangladesh where workers are paid as little as $10. Workers work in horrible conditions, being treated badly and to the point where managers beat their workers. There are also feminist issues where up to 80% of workers are female for the main reason of workers not being able to stand up to their bosses for a pay rise. Supporting endless greed The clothing/fashion industry is worth over 3 trillion dollars. Big companies such as Nike who sell their clothing products at a very high price, make their clothes in Bangladesh at a very low price. Often large companies will look to manufacture at a very low price. Workers who work in garment factories for companies such as Nike often earn a wage as low as $3 every day, to make products as cheaply as possible. Wages for these workers can go from as little as $3 per day for adults and down to $10 per month for children. Jobs like these do not include sick leave, overtime or annual leave. Some workers have not signed a contract when accepting the job, allowing for the factory not pay the worker if the factory is short of money. Being paid only $3 per day is a real issue as it barely allows for someone to survive rather than live comfortably. ¬ Feminist issues More than 80% of garment workers are female. This may be because female workers can be seen as cheaper than male workers and female workers also know who to use a sewing machine with ease. Male workers might also stand up to management of the factory about their pay and working conditions whereas female workers might not be able to do so because of their physical capability.
