As it is commonly stated, an environmentally active student from the University of Connecticut-Stamford comments, “The first step toward solving a problem is admitting there is one” (Lanslots). In the area of environmental awareness, the solution must be executed on both an individual and a corporate level. Aldo Leopold states, “A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke he is writing his signature on the face of the land” (73). Similarly we must realize that every action we take has an intended or unintended consequence upon our earth. Each step towards the conservation effort adds a signature to the plea to save our earth. As an up and coming chemistry scholar, it is important to raise awareness of the state of our environment and to recognize the strategies that can be taken as a member of a university, a citizen of the United States, and a future member of the corporate world to ensure a better environment and maintain resources for the future generations to live in this land.
The first step to addressing issues of sustainability is examining why this has become such a heated issue in our country. Throughout the past twenty years, scientists, politicians, and environmentalists have all combined efforts to raise awareness for the condition of our environment. Oguejiofor, of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria, states that the problems that they have identified in this sector of research through studies are global warming, ozone depletion, exhaustion of resources, and air pollution.
In the area of air pollution, photochemical smog is reported to consist of ozone, aldehydes, peroxyacyl nitrates, and nitric acid. When these pollutants combine with sunlight they produce even more pollutants in our ar...

The initial step in photochemical reactions is the absorption of a photon by an atom, molecule, free radical or ion. The result of this absorption is strongly dependent on the energy, in other word the wavelength of the photon. Visible and ultraviolet portion of the light is required to start the photochemical reactions. The absorption can generate dissociation, internal rearrangement, flourescence, or excited species. Photochemical smog can occur in any environment where there are large and continuous emissions of primary air pollutants. However specifics of climate and geography play an important role in the persistence and severity of the photochemical smog. Two factors influencing the formation of photochemical smog:

At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
Sustainability is an issue that everyone should be concerned about. If the planet Earth is going to exist, as we know it, everyone should wake up and do their part to help achieve a greater level of sustainability. In my English 101 class we learned about the issue of sustainability. Many different topics were discussed and researched throughout the course of the semester. Overall, I think that the sustainability project has been a learning and enlightening experience for everyone in this class. Many more things can be done next semester, since the groundwork has been laid to continue this project for time to come.
Sustainability must be defined to include meeting human physical, emotional and social needs (Rogers et al. 2012) and scholarly research and thinking on well being and its connection to the environment, sustainability, growth and sustainable development considers aspects that move towards social and environmental benefits . While environme...
Human civilization is evolving in the fields of science, engineering, architecture and medicine. The population because of these societal advances has allowed individuals to live longer sub healthy lives. Life improvements via transportation have been significantly enhanced because of breakthroughs in metal alloys which are used in car manufacturing. Or the usage of ether (ROR) extracted from corn to support the decline of gasoline. Individuals that live longer are thus able to experiment with different compounds seeking only to further improve on civilization. However, the more advanced our civilization becomes the greater the unknown risk of chemical exposures. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), in various publications, have defined an emerging contaminate as a chemical or material that is characterized by a perceived, potential or real threat to human health. A contaminant may also be emerging because of the discovery of a new source or new pathway to humans and/or a new detection and treatment method (DoD 2006). Nevertheless, the USGS defines emerging contaminates as any synthetic or naturally occurring chemical or any microorganism that is not commonly monitored in the environment. These EC's are thought to have the potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and or human health effects. The Environmental Council of the states recently completed a survey of how states agencies currently defined and address emerging contaminates (Jones and Graves 2010). It was found that the definition varied by the state but no state had a clear definition of emerging contaminates and each lacked defined programs to deal with t...
Many companies all over the world produce chemicals for their products that are harmful to the environment, human health, and to all living species. Green Chemistry is the use of chemistry for the prevention of chemical pollution to the environment by using chemicals that are benign, or not harmful. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that the mission of Green Chemistry is, “To promote innovative chemical technologies that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and use of chemical products.” Green Chemistry contains any aspects and types of chemical processes that reduce the negative effects of certain chemicals, in a way, using chemistry to fight chemistry.
Smog isn’t a major issue in Australia but in larger cities and developing countries where pollution levels are much higher smog is an everyday occurrence. Due to large populations these smog affected cities release a large sum of primary pollutants, which react with the atmosphere and in particular ultra violet light. The chemical reaction between the primary pollutants and ultraviolet light, results in secondary pollutants resulting in the formation of Photochemical Smog.

People have to start off understanding what environmental sustainability means. Allie Sibole author of, The Ethics of Sustainability: Why Should We Care?, shares a perfect example, “Sustainability is a moral response to an incredible gift” (Sibole 1). What she explains is, our planet is the beloved gift. People need to not take
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
Individually, or for a government or international organization I will use my Georgetown education and my empathetic skills to create systems that work; policies that encourage the use of green technologies on a global scale. I will work with everything I have to formulate courses of action that governments and organizations must take to implement these green innovations and put them to use within everyone’s day to day life. Following the Jesuit mission of education and prosperity for all, I plan to help educate the world on the possibilities of a sustainable

There are several problems that affect our world today : crime, war, overpopulation, ? And pollution is one of the most serious problems. It is growing every year. More important, pollution, which we are creating, is destroying our sources of resources. Global warming, oil spills, air pollution,? are resulted from our litter such as exhausted from economies, broken ships. And we are suffering them : shortage of food, shortage of water. If we don?t have the suitable way to prevent pollution, the results won?t stop here.
