Susskind and Cruikshank discuss the role of the mediator as someone who provides assistance to any given situation as a nonpartisan convenor. The role of the mediator is therefore to create a joint problem solving approach that delves into finding a solution or the “bottom line” to two parties as an intermediary and a spokesperson. This works especially well in groups where there is a perceived imbalance of power and reassures those who are anxious that their voices will be heard and information will be shared. In my last journal entry I spoke to the preservation department town hall meeting that was initiated by the students who had felt that they were not receiving the information that they were initially promised and had assumed they would when starting the degree. This was especially necessary as one of the key issues that the students were feeling were a disconnect from faculty and staff and a dissatisfaction with the lack of organization in a professional degree program. While these are issues that are not necessarily difficult to put forward, students felt that once they attempted to communicate this to the university staff it was quickly shut down and misjudged. In some cases, the reaction of university staff was condescending and unjustified, an issue that was also presented in the student group discussions. Joe’s role as a mediator created a necessary neutral body to convey the information to both parties involved. It was also necessary for him to not be directly involved with either of the parties and therefore lacked any deep understanding of the issues at hand. This allowed him to create an unbiased environment to rely the information to each party as it were

Identify communication problems that have contributed to the conflict between Principal Varber and Associate Principal Howard. I found several communication issues between Principal Varber and Associate Principal Howard. First, Principal Varber spent a substantial amount of time away from campus. Although, in the beginning it was clear that the reason for his employment was to improve the relationship between the community and the school. Secondly, his failure to acknowledge his staff for their outstanding job performance when he receives community recognition about the school. It seems like he only wanted recognition for himself and not when others did well. All too often, teachers design their lectures with the mindset that they need to facilitate their job through PowerPoint presentations and long lectures with little student interaction. There is something to be said about the accessibility of professors being approachable; however, having a class discussion that operates well creates the small interactive community both inside and out of the classroom. Ultimately, universities have the opportunity to mold the rather plastic minds of young adults; they need to be willing to take a hard look at how they instruct their students and offer new and invigorating teaching techniques in their classes.

They will always have a job, but what about the decisions for the quality of the education? Or having to cover the expenses of staying current with the newest technology and amenities as well? In order to keep balance in all of this the school will usually raise tuition which causes a chain reaction of rising costs for everything. In week 7 our seminar leader allocated us into smaller groups of six to work together, get together and to start preparing for the mock debate in week 9 and the debate in week 10. When we started to get alone with each other, it was seen that it is not going to be easy to achieve our goals, not just because in our group had a strong activist, reflector, theorist and pragmatist, but we also needed to face some solvable difficulties as our first meeting of the week was cancelled by problem like the lack of communication, miscommunication and the ability to listen to another.
Mediation is commonly understood as an informal process whereby a neutral third party person helps the conflicting parties try to reach a mutual settlement and does so with no power to impose a resolution.
