What makes a great leader? This is a question that has been asked over and over, but has been answered in multiple ways. Maybe this is because leadership can be a variety of attributes seen in a person. Some people believe that a leader is an individual who rises above their peers. Some people believe being a leader exhibits never ending courage. Others believe that to be a leader you have to be more creative than the rest. Although all these attributes make someone a good leader, they do not define every attribute a great leader displays. Sometimes being a leader means getting out of one’s comfort zone. Sometimes leadership is facing every day with a smile on your face, when a storm is brewing around you. Although what makes a great leader …show more content…
can be a controversial question , the majority of great leaders display tremendous courage, moral soundness, and they always impact those around them. All great leaders have a fearless sense of courage. One of America’s greatest leaders, George Washington, had the ability to face fear at its threshold. By doing this he became someone others admired, and followed for guidance. He also provided many people with the realization of what was occurring in their country, and what the nation needed to do to uphold their freedom. Rosa Parks is another person whose unyielding courage inspired others to stand up against what they knew was wrong. After refusing to give up her seat, she encouraged a bus boycott that would tremendously affect the outcome of the Civil Rights Movement. Displaying an outrageous amount of courage, Rosa Parks encouraged and lead others to do the same in their daily lives. Another great leader in history whose courage leads him to make one of the biggest sacrifices to lead others was Jesus Christ. He displayed his courage by dying for his people. In return for his sacrifice and courage, many others were lead to faith in Christ. George Washington, Rosa Parks, and Jesus Christ are all examples of how being a great leader takes awesome courage. Another defining attribute of a great leader is their sense of moral stability. Mahatma Gandhi is someone whose moral stability and virtue of peace has led him to become one of the most influential leaders in the world. By standing for non-violence, Gandhi has gathered many followers, because he appeals to their sense of right and wrong. He is the perfect example of a leader whose moral compass has influenced many of his followers. Malcolm X, a civil rights activist had a different moral soundness, that gained him a different kind of following. Although his morals against whites were not peaceful, they were stable in the fact that they were unchanging. Many of his followers were drawn to him because of his headstrong opinions on fighting back against whites, and this contributed to the strength of his leadership. Booker T. Washington set a standard for his followers by saying that elevating oneself to a higher moral ground was the best way to deal with discrimination. Displaying his morals for all to see, Booker T. Washington made a statement for the abomination that segregation was. This lead him to be someone many others looked up to as an example of what they wanted to stand for. Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Booker T. Washington show that stable morals are a part of being a great, influential leader. Lastly, a great leader always impacts those around them..
Martin Luther King Jr. greatly impacted the African American race to fight for racial equality. Whether it was through his powerful speeches, or his own persona, Martin Luther King Jr. impacted those he met. As an effect of Martin Luther’s acts, many African Americans were inspired to take action of their own civil rights. Susan B. Anthony, a woman who fought for Women’s Rights, created a following that became unstoppable. Before Susan spoke up against the injustices women were facing, many women were afraid to express their feelings about their rights as citizens of America. Instigating a fire against injustice in women around America, Susan B. Anthony’s impact was evident when millions of women got together to protest for Women’s Right’s. Abraham Lincoln influenced many whites to turn against slavery. His impact on society was clearly seen when the Emancipation Proclamation was passed. Without Lincoln’s impact on society, there is a real possibility that slavery could have continued for a much longer time. Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony, and Abraham Lincoln, all show that a great leader has the power to impact the ideals and actions of those around
them. Although the question of what makes a leader great is controversial, there are a few main qualities that make a great leader. Great leaders are willing to do whatever it takes to get their point across, they always stand up for what they believe to be right, and they always affect those around them Someone can be a good, leader, but not a great one. In conclusion, the characteristic that distinguishes a great leader from a good one is how far they are willing to go to see change.
Throughout the course of American history, there have been many historical figures who have been responsible for, or were a part of the gradual change of our nation. In the early to mid 1900's, the United States was racially segregated, and African Americans were looked at as second class citizens. In the mid-1900's, a time period which is now known as the Civil Rights Movement, there were a number of different people who helped lead the charge to desegregate the United States. Some of the historical figures, who's names are synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement, include political activist Martin Luther King, NAACP officer Medgar Evers, Baptist minister Malcolm X, and normal citizen Rosa Parks. All of these people were a very large part of the Civil Rights Movement and attempted to recognize African Americans as equals to Whites.
Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. both helped the Civil rights movement through their actions. Anthony was amazing with getting women their right to vote; as was King with being active in helping desegregate African-American communities. A list of quotes found on Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes shows this particular thing MLK Jr. has said… “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”(Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes)....
Susan B. Anthony’s Accomplishments Susan B. Anthony is a one of a kind lady. She didn’t care what people thought of her. She wanted to show the world what she believed in. Susan B. Every Leader is defined by his or her qualities and characteristics. These can determine how effective a leader has become. This statement has been true throughout the history of mankind. However, there are only a handful of specific qualities that can truly determine if someone is an effective leader.
In the time of slavery there were several people who had an impact on freedom and equality for African Americans. Some people were Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and W.E.B Du Bois. W.E.B Du Bois was a great inspirational spokesperson. He quoted, “To be poor is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships.” He lead his own movement and it was called the Niagara movement. He was associated with the N.A.A.C.P. He wrote books on his studies. He was a tremendous black activist.
...spects of what makes up an effective leader, it is clear that there cannot be one clear- cut and dry definition of what a leader is. A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the reflex action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Leadership may be a type of management but a manager is not always a leader. “Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.”
The Civil Rights Movement is one of the most important events of the history of the United States. Although many people contributed to this movement, Martin Luther King, Jr., is widely regarded as the leader of the movement for racial equality. Growing up in the Deep South, King saw the injustices of segregation first hand. King’s studies of Mahatma Ghandi teachings influenced his views on effective ways of protesting and achieving equality. In order to be able to understand what makes an effective leader, it is first essential to understand what leadership is. There are many varying perceptions about the concept of leadership. Everyone has a different definition of what makes someone a leader. My definition is not a statement of requirements, but more so a list of characteristics. I believe it takes a strong, independent, dependable, open-minded, thoughtful, selfless, smart and creative, someone who can work well with others, able to work under pressure, respectful, and experienced individual to be a leader. I believe it is someone who knows who they are and know their morals, someone who has already found who they are in life and accepts who they are, making what I believe the most important characteristic is, is someone who knows and sticks with their personal values. If someone cannot respect values and stick to their word, then how can they be a leader of others? A leader takes a lot of work, but if you are good at it, it may seem like nothing. Some people are leaders and do not even know it, like role models. When little kids look up to certain people that have impacted their lives in a way, they will see those people as role models. Truth is, leaders are everywhere and not everyone knows or can see that. It's not always the person who stands out for taking control or being bossy, but the one with the characteristics and high values that do the right things, even when no one is watching.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
First we have to ask ourselves, what makes a good leader? Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. A good leader is someone who is very goal oriented, but bases their goals as a group, not on one’s own desires. A goal oriented leader would use language such as, “We need to get this done,” rather than, “I need this done”. You see this in the novel from Ralph when he is very insistent on keeping the signal fire lit, so as there can be a chance for rescue. Another great quality of a
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
Growing up in the South I experienced the affects of desegregation in the schools and saw how one person standing up for what they believe in could make a difference. On the national stage Martin Luther King Jr. was a powerful agent of change. He stood up for what he believed in and was subjected to abuse and violence as a result. Martin Luther King became the leader of a movement that forced huge changes in this country - from desegregation to voting rights to equal opportunity laws.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
