Mikaela Lopez Mrs. Matthews ELA 8 6 March, 2023 Surviving in Fear Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is his memoir about his experience as a Jew during World War II. It starts by painting the picture of his life before the war, a life full of happiness, family, and worship. Then, it all came crashing down when the Nazis took over his town and transferred his family and friends into ghettos and then concentration camps. The Nazi party came into power in 1933 when Adolf Hitler, their leader, became chancellor of Germany. They terrorized many minority groups, mainly Jews, and sought to eradicate these people from the human race because they had different beliefs. This resilience, the ability to adapt to his horrible reality, along with the fear fueling it, kept him alive. We can see faith failing not just Elie, but many other people trapped in the concentration camps as well. We can see faith first fail the Jews of Sighet, Elie’s town. On page 18, the Jews of this town, including Elie’s family, went into the ghettos made by the Nazis because they came to the conclusion that nothing bad would happen to them if they followed their orders. Their faith in humanity was so strong that they ignored all the red flags the Nazis were waving, which is why they went into the ghettos without a struggle. In the end, going into the ghettos without questioning the morals of the Nazi German soldiers caused them to be easily thrown into the concentration camps. Another time we can see faith fail Elie and his dad is when Rosh Hashanah is celebrated by their fellow prisoners at Auschwitz.
