The first step in a journey through a twelve-step program is to admit you have a problem. It takes a lot of courage it takes to admit you have a problem. Upon my attendance at Gamblers Anonymous I was able to observe seven very courageous people. As McDonagh says in her article “Shared Benefits,” The benefit of group therapy is “ ..discovering the group as a safe environment where you can say whet you think without fear.” McDonagh presents and discusses descriptions of group therapy clearly and in a way that you do not have to be a therapist or researcher to understand her findings. This article explains how to find a group by giving tips on what you should look for when looking for a support group and suggests you do not nix a group you do not like until you give it 3 months. The overall purpose of “Gambler’s Anonymous” is to support people that have a serious gambling issue. Most of these people have gambled away their life savings and destroyed their families. At Gamblers Anonymous, the goal is to not gamble anymore. It may sound simple to someone who does not have a gambling addiction, however according to the people at the meeting, it is a conscious decision they have to make on a daily basis. The gambling that they supposed to avoid is not only casino venues, but is also placing petty wagers. For example, “I bet you $5 that the Broncos will win the Super Bowl,” is frowned upon in the twelve-step program. They do not accept donations from outside sources. It is self-supported by contributions from the members of Gambler’s Anonymous. Another philosophy that Gamblers Anonymous has is that it is hard to fight addiction on your own. They highly recommend that you attend meetings more than once a week until you can get your add... ... middle of paper ... ...that after someone has shared their story, no one can comment on what they said. In a way this is good because no one can belittle their feelings by saying something wrong. However, this can also be a bad thing because sometimes people at support groups as for advice and no one is allowed to reply directly. In applying this to my own nursing practice I realize that everyone goes through phases in their life where they might need group therapy. It is important as a nurse to know where to be able to find resources to get patients connected with support groups in their area. Trying to find a support group, and pick which group I wanted to attend really opened my eyes to the addiction problems in the greater Oklahoma City area that I was unaware of and Gamblers Anonymous did just that. Group therapy, is like a night out with the ladies. An evening night out when the ladies take a break from motherhood and being a wife. And take the necessary need to let go of some stress and resolve any issues they may have. Sharing and supporting, is like a study group were students get together to focus on particular projects. When gambling becomes a problem it impacts that person’s social, emotional and financial life. Legalized gambling in America is creating a wide spread problem, pathological gamblers cannot resist the irresponsible urge to gamble, even though the impact could ruin their marriage, their job and financial security. The sad thing here is a person can very easily hide the fact they are losing control of themselves when it comes to gambling, at least for a while. When family or friends do finally realize what is going on. The gambler has a full blown addiction.
As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.

One on one therapy helps the therapist and resident build a therapeutic relationship. A therapeutic relationship is crucial with this type of population, because it helps promote a successful outcome. This type of therapy allows for the individual to point out his/her strengths and weaknesses. It also helps them identify how to deal with their problems independently. Group therapies allow the individuals to share their experiences with others who have similar struggles. This allows the individuals to build off of each other’s struggles and successes. Group therapy can offer the essential support acquired from others within the group who are experiencing similar, if not the same, struggles as his or her peers. When someone is on the other side of the equation, for instance, it can be quite difficult to comprehend the extent to which an individual is willing to go and the manner in which he or she explains the urge to indulge. Therefore, for relatable factors, those within the group could find comfort in knowing that he or she is not alone and make those much needed, healthy connections emerging from the group. Once connections are made and therapeutic relationships are established, which can take some time, the encouraging support with a sense of empathetic understanding should emerge and the seemingly alienation from the world can begin to diminish. It is the positive nourishment deriving from successful group counseling that can offer enrichment to his or her stagnated growth that effectively leads to the blooming expansion of his or her life once again (Van Wormer & Davis, 2013).
Forming a counseling group may seem simple, but it’s not. A “major issue in putting a group together is screening it for potential members” (Gladding, pg. 212). The reason it can be a complicated task to complete is because members are not always volunteers. Screening members for a “group counseling session, is a three step process” (Gladding, pg. 212). We’ll discuss how these steps are an important component of having a successful group.
Evelyn Figueroa agreed that any patients joining a support group is beneficial to his/her recovery, “ Yes, support groups absolutely work because that means there are others with similar, if not worse, problems then you. Leaders must make sure to keep the topics broad enough to contribute to helping a larger group. Starting out as a form of therapy by doctors, support groups are now able to be formed by community members, patients who have progressed in recovery and organizations have been formed solely on providing the necessary forms of support and direction on where your local support group can be found. Organizations such as The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention provides public direction to support groups in every state, as well as provide online support. There are many different techniques and approaches to group counseling. The approach that I found to be the most interesting is the existential approach. “The existential perspective holds that we define ourselves by our choices” (Corey & Corey, 2014, p.114). This approach can be successful in therapy because it allows one to oversee one’s future. In this paper, I’m going to generally discuss the existential approach to therapy and where it can be used.
