When we as in the individuals think about what a Superpower is, we usually think that it’s pretty much dominance. But actually the answer isn’t wrong at all. A superpower is a state that achieves generally unopposed dominance and can exert international influence at will. There are no set rules that make a state a superpower, but there are some common characteristics that most agree are necessary to earn the difference. It’s quite a few countries that we contemplate superpowers. The superpowers countries in the world are most effective in doing some political or either economic decisions. There are a number of factors that you must contribute to become a superpower including military resources, political influence, economic power and human resources. Military power is the most valued consideration that helps in becoming a country superpower. France for instance, its economy is ranked as the ninth largest in the world and fourth largest in the Europe by purchasing power. Its military budget is ranked at number six in the world and its military is 29th largest in the world. France is also one the seven nuclear powers of the world. It is a large maker of the agricultural products and is the third largest biggest exporter in the world. Another country is Germany It is a global leader in different technological and industrial sectors and is the second largest exporter of goods including electronics and textiles. It has highest military expenditures and is ranked at number nine in this category of superpowers. Germany has a great power and is very important in global and regional affairs. It is also an affiliate with United Nations, EU, and NATO. Japan however is another country that’s considered a superpower even though it’s ranked at... ... middle of paper ... ...ly means that the hegemonic state has the strongest military in the world, which means alliances that they have are stronger than their rivals too. Economic means that the state has the largest and most precisely advanced economy in the world. Another dimension is political, and that’s when the leader has a wide range of political allies and sociable relations with most nations and major powers. The institutional dimension usually controls most of the international institutions and thus significantly shapes the rules that govern global political and economic relations. Also the ideological is the last dimension, and that’s when the state largely determines the terms of discourse in global relations. The idea of hegemony has been used generally in many places to refer to any form of authority more so when one is deciding to dominance through culture and non-military.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best movies portraying loneliness and nerds. It is the story of Napoleon in high school and his lonely adventures. All the main characters feel separated, misunderstood, and have nobody to relate to. Napoleon has no friends and lives in his own fantasy land. He is avoided by everybody. His brother seems to be mislead, wanting to be a cage fighter but staying home all the time hopelessly trying to find love and attention on the internet. Their grandmother is never there for them, though she lives her own life right beside them. They live next to a huge field, reinforcing their isolation. Practically every home in the film is
...f becoming the great arsenal of democracy, they provided Britain and China with military supplies in the fight against Germany and Japan. The United States faced Japan’s ruthless strategies that incited fear towards anyone of the Japanese ethnicity. As a result, Americans felt that the war should end quickly in order to avoid further bloodshed. Following that statement, the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By the end of World War II, there was a production of radical redistribution of world power. Japan and Germany, two dominant military powers in the beginning, has surrendered. Furthermore, Britain and France, though victorious were weakened, leaving the United States and Soviet Union to project significant influence beyond their national borders. Overall, the United States military demonstration during WW2 proved that it was clearly the dominant power.
The 19th century set the stage for different policies that lead to the extending of America’s power, which is defined as imperialism. Imperialism started for different reasons like the Americans wanting the U.S. to expand or explore the unknown land, or even some feared existing resources in U.S. might eventually dry up. The reason imperialism started doesn’t really matter, but more of what it caused. Imperialism lead to Cuban assistance, the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to America, and Yellow Journalism.
Historical dominance has been part of the global history for centuries. One of the biggest
The prehistoric times stand evidence to the power of language as a tool for communication and growth. Language has proven to be an effective medium and factor surrounding the evolution of man. Language has played a big role in the development of individuals and societies. What is spoken and/or written, help in the initiation of imagination, expression of feelings, and conveyance of thoughts and ideas.
Beginning in the 1940’s, the global landscape was changing dramatically. With the start of World War II, tensions were rising among the world’s most powerful nations. Russia, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States were all trying to achieve global dominance. During World War II, the smart decision to invest in atomic energy made the United States a global superpower.
Before we get into how we aren’t the greatest country, what classifies a country to be the greatest in the world? According to OECD, (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), they classify what it takes to be a great nations on a few values where we aren’t doing so well in. This organization only has records and statistics for 34 participating countries. Nevertheless, we only do best between them all in one category. We place second in the category of money and wealth, behind Luxembourg. The other three categories are: Land of Opportunity, where we placed twelfth, Joy of Life, where we placed sixteenth, and Safety, where we placed twenty-eighth. (4) To make a country great, it takes a combination of things and the hard work of that nation. A few major things a growing country would need to become great, are: a solid economy, a sound society, good leadership, and the will of the people, to name a few. Each of these things that are needed have many finer points below them that all work towards their main goal.
Mearsheimer defined a hegemon as a state that dominates all others, but he stressed the limitations of hegemony (2001, pp40-2.) America experienced an extend of power, financially, economically, military, and internationally that lead the country to hegemony. Some scholars believed that America became a superpower. Others think that its hegemony is precarious. Many internal and structural factors predisposed the United States to drive to its dominance. However, structural factors are more likely preponderant in its rise among the world system as a hegemon. First, the United States has established its assertive power upon its neighbors, thereafter in the rest of the world.
In conclusion while it is clear that both the USA and the USSR were super-powers during the 45 year Cold War I believe that it can be argued that the USA was the pre-eminent super-power. This is primarily because they were able to outspend the USSR so effectively at crucial points such as during the USSR invasion of Afghanistan and during the later “Star Wars” period. The amount that President Reagan proposed to spend on this nuclear defence system just could not be matched by the USSR. In more recent times China is considered a possibility for reaching super-power status. While economically this may be the case as far as the influence of their culture and way of life goes it would appear that China has still not quite made super-power status.
When people think of heroes and villains they think of the characters who play these roles in cartoon movies like Batman and Spiderman, but in reality, anyone can be a hero and anyone can be a villain. Heroes are considered to be inspirational and bold because of what they do to help others. While villains are typically defined as a wicked or evil person who makes others feel helpless.
American exceptionalism is a belief that the United States is different from other nations around the world and as such superior; the term was coined by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, yet the philosophy of American superiority can be traced all the way back to the days before the United States was even an idea. They saw their new culture as “A city upon a hill” and sought to achieve moral and spiritual perfection. With this moral superiority the colonists, later Americans, saw a duty presented upon them by God and nature to instill such superior values into other cultures and the world. One such example can be clearly seen in the work of St. John de Crèvecoeur in Letters from an American Farmer where the narrator “Farmer James” states his belief
Hegemony was derived from the Greek word "egemonia," meaning leader or ruler, often in the sense of a state other than his own (Williams 144). Although the base of this definition remains true, the word has evolved to much more. Hegemony is defined by Fontana Dictionary of Modern Thought as "Political and economical control exercised by a dominant class, and its success in projecting its own way of seeing the world, human and social relationships as 'common sense' and part of the natural order by those who are, in fact, subordinated to it." Hegemony is defined as a predominant influence or leadership of a dominant class or institution over a subordinate class; the question is are the "subordinates" forced to follow the beliefs, or do they agree with them?
Economic hegemony implies the ability to center the economy around the power whereas political hegemony means being able to dominate militarily; essentially, a hegemon is a state that is able to force its will upon other states due to its power or means, economically, socially, politically, militarily, or a combination of these factors. According to David Wilkinson, a state must meet the following criteria in order to achieve hegemonic status: investiture, installation, appointment and deposition, adjunction, maintenance of order, convocation, command, veto, subsidy, tribute, and conversion. According to realist theory, states such as Napoleonic France pursue power and the strategy of offensive realism for main reasons: states seek security in an anarchic system, some states inherently possess offensive capabilities, states can never be sure of other states’ intentions, survival is the primary goal of international actors, and states are rational actors that act to survive and take advantage of opportunities to gain a better position. Under this criteria and according to these motivations, France under Napoleon was able to achieve significant control over Europe by “[launching] numerous military campaigns, [occupying] numerous countries, and incessantly [restructuring] the map of Europe,” but the state failed to achieve lasting and stable
Since the earliest recorded history, there has always been one elusive title that a State has strived for, the title of Super Power. Power is one of the fundamental characteristics of the international system and the distribution of power among states. It is obvious that states are unequal in power and this “entails a number of important implications for international politics”. As a result of this lack of power, the ‘weak states’ desires and concerns are often neglected and the ‘strong states’ demands usually shape the international agenda. In the Modern Society, some would argue that we have two great powers in Russia and the United States, but if you measure and compare the two countries, The United States is more powerful. Some of these categories are population in which the U.S has more than double Russ...
Everyone has their own definition of a strong person. A strong person to me is a person that can overcome the adversities in life positively. My friend Ivery, my dad, and my sister can be boldly described as a strong person in so many ways. In order to be characterized as a strong person you have to be stable-minded, courageous, and honest. Every strong person has their own character traits but there are some that stand out more than others. Some people may define people strong by their physical strengths. Others might say you are strong because you didn’t cry when you should have cried. Defining a strong person is based off of your perception of something. There are three people that demonstrate strong qualities as an individual.
