Superhero Story My super name is Potasidon and my real name is Potassium, I was born in 1807. I was created by Humphry Davy, which is my father. Throughout Watchmen by Alan Moore we are presented with the theme of breaking down the effectiveness of super heroes. Showing the world that super heroes, who are depicted as bearers of all things good and true, would not be feasible. These heroes are given authority over common mortals while remaining unwatched, which can have far more detrimental affects on society than a society without “super heroes”. Even the most prized person in spandex would too, like common mortals, present moral lapse and cognitive dissonance between what society wants them to do and personal ambition. Alan Moore shows this dubious morality of the most divine character in this graphic novel. Dr. Manhattan, a man turned into an omniscient being shows disconnect between the world and himself. Within the short essay entitled Dr.Manhattan: Super-powers and the superpowers, we see the flaws in allowing heroes to remain unwatched; to do as they please without the consequence of your average human. This helps exemplify the deconstruction of the political superhero. These flaws include dehumanizing of Dr. Manhattan in making him the United States of America’s nuclear deterrent, that Dr.Manhattan is not the Vitruvian Man; a perfect specimen, as society makes him out to be, and the fact that a “God Exists and he’s American” (Dr.Manhattan: Super-powers and the superpowers.II). This essay amplifies the theme of breaking down the effectiveness of super heroes, just as Moore sought to do.
For many years the American Hero has filled the silver screen and wide screened television sets, along with shelves of countless bookstores. Audiences love to see the protagonist overcome great odds, defeat the forces of evil, and save the beautiful girl at the last second. The character of the American Hero however, is not a new idea. James Cooper, in the 1800’s, created the archetype of the American Hero. Natty Bumpo, also called Deerslayer, embodied many qualities of the great American Hero. Modern day heroes are simply following the example set by Cooper’s creation.
‘Heck Superhero’, written by Martine Leavitt, is the melancholy tale of Heck, a thirteen year old self-proclaimed superhero. When his mother is evicted from their home and leaves without a trace, Heck finds himself abandoned and alone on the streets. Desperate to find his mother, he offers up ‘good deeds’ in hopes of finding her. But instead he finds that he’s not just losing mother, he’s also losing himself. To aid in my comprehension of this book, I used a variety of reading strategies from visualizing to inferencing to further my understanding of ‘Heck Superhero’.

Marston, creator of fictional heroine Wonder Woman, asked a girl which female superhero she aspired to be, the girl retorted, “Aw, that’s girls stuff! Who wants to be a girl?” And that is the point; just as the young comic enthusiast suggested, our world has become a dominantly patriarchal society, ranking men over women in the social hierarchy. Author Oremus wrote an essay that appeared in the online magazine Slate in 2013 which discusses the outcome of the relationships between our emerging technology and people who use it. If science gives people superpowers, will they use them for good or evil?” author Oremus argues that people posses the capacity for both good and evil, but the type of superhero they become is determined not only by the make up of their genes, but also the circumstances in which they find themselves. First one must understand that the basis of this name is hero. What is a hero? A hero is a person who does something special or out of the ordinary in order to help others. As time went by the number of people who were true heroes diminished and just doing something for someone was no longer big news. There had to be something more to make them stand out. The American culture needed someone or something to admire and that is where our common day superheroes come into play. It gave them a goal which could never be reached in hopes that people would never stop trying.

Numerous stories in literature have heroes with different qualities but they all are similar in the sense that real heroes perform courageous acts for the sole purpose of helping others. Five heros which demonstrate the idea of self-sacrifice include Augustus Waters from the Fault in Our Stars, Hector from the Illiad, Odysseus from The Odyssey, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, and Cyrano de Bergerac from the play Cyrano De Bergerac. Augustus puts his life at risk to leave home and help fulfill the dreams of his sickly girlfriend. He ends up changing her life by teaching her what counts and the real beauty in life. Hector put his life at risk to fight against the Trojan warriors. Odysseus jeopardizes his life for the safety of his men during the voyage to return home. Katniss stops being 'just another piece in the capitol’s game' and fights back because she cares more about others than herself. Cyrano puts another man’s happiness before his own and was willing to sacrifice seeing his love be taken away by him. As seen in many famous works of literature, heroes have been displayed through loyalty and bravery, but a genuine hero’s most noteworthy attribute is self-sacrifice.
