Summer of My German Soldier The novel, Summer of My German Soldier, written by Bette Greene is about a young Jewish girl, Patty, who befriends a Nazi soldier. She confides in him because of the lack of parental love in her life. The Nazi soldier shows Patty that she is a person of value and is important in the world. This is something that her parents have never told her. Michael Tuchner, director of the cinematic version of, Summer of My German Soldier, does a fair job of portraying the action in the novel, however some key scenes are not shown thus taking away important facts that the viewer would see.
There are many scenes in the movie that are not in the book. There are a few key additions, one of which is, Anton asking Patty

One major example of this is the scenes that involve Anton’s leaving. In the book, it is at night and it is long and dramatic. They also kiss right before he runs into the night. In the movie, it is during the day and very abrupt. The FBI comes to the Bergen’s house to search for the Nazi. Anton is forced to leave because he does not want to be found. They do not kiss in the movie, but Anton does give Patty a kiss on the forehead before he leaves. Another example of the changes which take place are the book’s and movie’s version of the stone throwing episode. In the book Patty goes out to look for the people whose window she broke to pay them back with Ruth’s money. She gets to her father’s store and sees that the car is there. Her dad gets to her before she can get to them and he beats her without even listening to what she has to say. In the movie Patty gets the money from Ruth and starts to leave. She does not even get out of the house before her dad walks in and starts to yell at her. She tries to tell him that she is going to pay them for the window but he just covers her mouth and yells.
During the movie many things take place in different times for which they took place in the book. In the movie Anton escapes during the first part; in the book Anton doesn’t escape until more than halfway through. Also in the book, the preachers’ wife complains
Dieter, a fifteen year old German soldier, is going into war even though his parents don’t want him to. He has no idea what real war is going to be like and he thinks that Germany has done no wrong no matter what the other, elderly soldiers tell him, he doesn’t believe it. The other boy, Spence, is sixteen and he drops out
The first difference between the novel and the movie was the press conference that was held on behalf of Amy the gorilla. In the novel, this press conference never took place. In the novel, the press conference was held to settle a legal debate on whether or not Peter Elliot was abusing Amy and whether or not Amy should be released from Peter’s studies and experiments. However, in the movie, there was no reason stated as to why the press conference was being held.
There are many differences in the movie that were not in the book. In the movie there is a new character in the movie that was not in the book. This character was David Isay.
In both the novel and movie focus on the war. The war influences the characters to enroll. Also, the main setting is at the Devon School. However, in the novel Gene visits Leper at his house but in the movie Leper lives in the woods. In the novel Gene is coming back to the Devon School 15 years later. However, in the book he is coming to Devon as a new student. Therefore, similarities and differences exist in time and setting in the novel and the movie. In the novel and the movie there are similarities and differences in events, character, and time and setting.
Stark contrasts exist between the description of the characters and emotional content between the book and the movie. This may be mainly due to the limited length of the movie. In the movie, Rat Kiley who is telling the story seems gentler. In the book they make it seem like everything Rat says is exaggerated, but the movie does not stress that fact. “Among the men in Alpha Company, Rat had a reputation for exaggeration and overstatement, a compulsion to rev up the facts, and for most of us it was normal procedure to discount sixty or seventy percent of anything he had to say” (O’Brien 89). Also, the movie emphasizes the fact that Rat Kiley fell in love with Mary Anne Bell. He himself says he loved her towards the end of the movie. A character that people may tend to have sympathy for is Mark Fossie. In the book, one may not feel for Fossie. The movie shows the character having more feeling especially after he couldn’t find Mary Anne. A third character that is portrayed differently in the movie than in the book is Mary Anne, who is the main female character of the chapter. The movie stressed the fact that Mary Anne wanted to learn more about the Vietnamese way of life. There was a scene in the movie where Mary Anne spent time with the Vietnamese soldiers learning their language and how to cook their food. They also show her going ...
In the movie, they missed things or changed parts, but they also quoted the book quiet a lot and make the story more a like. Most of the most important parts were in the movie. They missed one of the camps that Corrie was sent to and the didn’t show much of the 100th year party of the watch shop besides a picture. I liked the book way more than the movie because the book had more detail and made you understand what that part of WWII was like more than the movie does. In the book Corrie is learning how to have more faith and trust in God more but in the movie, she had a lot of faith the whole time and she didn’t struggle with that as much. I enjoyed reading about that because it made me feel like I’m not the only one that struggles.
Usually movies try to take the story to a different level or by adding parts or just try to change it to a completely different story. Some of the differences between the movie as to the book are some little and large differences. They might also try taking little parts away that will change how the readers see the story characters. An example of that would be Walter not smoking in the movie (Pg 115). Walter usually smokes because he is stressed or just as a way to relax. Walter also does not get punched by Mam...
The movie easily cut out very important parts of the story. The beginning of the book is so important because you really get the feel for the weird mother-daughter relationship between Astrid and her Mother. In the movie you only get to see a small portion of how Astrid’s Mother treats her. Also, in the movie they do not tell the whole story about Astrid’s Mother and the man that she murdered. I could go on and on listing the many things that we left out that are so important to the story.
The movie also switches stuff up, because in the book the first sense or diary they got chase after they got off the bus from school, which in the movie they got chased walking on their way to school. Hilary Swank play Erin like if she was actually her, like if she knew her life story and what she had been through. In the movie she lost her husband for wanting to let go of the kids, and in the book it never states she has a
One is megs glasses and braces. In the book she has them but in the movie she doesn't . Another difference is Charles Wallace. In the book he's 5 and doesn’t go to school and can't read. Wile in the movie he's 6 reads and goes to school. Also in the book Camozots is bright and colorful but in the movie its dark and gloomy. The setting is also different the book take’s place in the past were there was no technology such as computers or internet while the movie dose. lastly another difference is the endings. In the book meg got to Camozots rescues Charles , her father and go home. Shortly after Mrs. Whatsit in a very faint mist tries telling meg something before she blows away and doesn't finish what she was saying. Wile in the movie meg saves Charles,Dad and the people of Camozots. Then go home to have a final goodby from the three
In her book, Summer of My German Soldier, a major idea was the fact that Patty started to like a German POW who she eventually fall in love with. During World War II, there were all sorts of POW camps. The Germans, Japanese, British and others all had these camps. The Americans had around 155 camps which they controlled. These camps were heaven compared to those in other countries. The American POW camps provide the prisoners with huge meals, the ability to decorate their prison cells, and strong relationships between them and the guards watching over them. However in Japan, out of all 95000 or so prisoners in the camps, more than
Even though they are alike, there are some differences like, in the movie they were neighbors and in the book they lived across the street. Also in the movie they played basketball at school and in the book they didn't.
War. It is something that is always there like air. Even though at times it is not seen, it is present and active. Maybe it is in different parts of the world, but it just may be right around the bend. No matter where one is located, fighting bloody battles is one thing always occurring. Little innocent children, their fathers and mothers, and all sorts of relatives are perishing due to the effect of the endless wars. In the book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah, a young boy of twelve is recruited to become a soldier during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Beah’s village gets attacked by rebels and forces himself to become separated from his family. Food becomes scarce as he and his rap friend wander from villages
There are many notable differences between the book and the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird. Although not all of the differences change the outcome of the full story. First, Jem retrieved his pants from the Radley fence, and Dill did not make up strip poker. Second, Aunt Alexandria never comes to live with the children. Third, the children never go to church with Calpurnia.
In the book Dally is described as having white/blond hair and blue eyes but in the movie he has brown hair and brown eyes. Some more differences are you don't get to know the characters as well because, you aren't getting to hear what Ponyboy is thinking. In the book the Soces are from the west side and the Greasers are from the East side of town, but in the movie the Soces are from the south and the Greasers are from the north side of town. One more difference is in the book Darry slapped Ponyboy causing him to run away with Johnny but in the movie Darry pushes Ponyboy.
