Who enjoys summer reading? I know I don't but it's not just because i am not fond of reading or I just want to do nothing the whole summer, it's because it causes stress and some books are boring. I feel schools should lower the amount of books children must read during the summer or they could make students read a couple books but not have a report on them. On the subject of stress, stress is one of the main factors causing insomnia and other sleep disorders. Kids during the school year are super stressed with tests/quizzes almost everyday, piles of homework, and many projects, they can't help but count down the days till relaxation also known as summer. Where all students put their worries aside for two months and with having so many books to read, it's like school never stopped. Believe it or not kids are busy. Some kids goof off and put off their summer reading till the last week of summer but others don't have the time. Many kids like myself have summer camps all summer because our parents have work. Stress also can cause high cholesterol, cardiac problems and depression. Ever though about that? …show more content…
Kids can find time to read a book but when it's time to do the report it just gets way harder. We finally get a relaxing time but we have to read three books and to a report for each of them. It's also very hard for people who have dyslexia or ADHD to focus on reading books that won't help them at all in the future when they would rather make the most of their summer and have fun. Kids are preparing for the new school year and trying to make a good impression on their future teachers but it's hard to do that when the books they are forced to read are

Stress is a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs both the physical and mental equilibrium. When you lose sleep not only are you mentally unbalanced, but you can also become unbalanced physically. Stress prompts the fight or flight responses, which can assist you in many everyday life situations. Stress is the biggest factor for sleeping disorders. A lot of students have trouble sleeping at night because of stress. Their workload, financial worries, and self-esteem give them stress through out the day keeping them up at night when they are trying to sleep. In a study done by Chen, Lee, Rogers, and Wuertz (2013), 103 female college students sleeping patterns were studied in relation to stress. Summer reading: a single word that causes thousands of students dread and apprehension nationwide. If we single out these words "summer", this word reminds kids of endless fun and even better no school; "reading" reminds kids of boring a waste of time. Reading doesn’t deserve this title of boring and a waste of time, if anything reading is fun and a source of endless knowledge.
This is also proven by a study, which shows that students who perform worse on their exams seem to be more stressed and suffer from poor sleep quality (Ahrberg, Dresler, Niedermaier, Steiger, & Genzel, 2012). For instance, student A is a freshman at Ball State University. This student only sleeps for 6 hours because of bad sleeping habits and later on he sleeps for only 4 hours because of the new environment which has many factors that affect his sleep schedule such as social life, school activities or extracurricular activities. Then sleep deprivation is starting to affect him. He have a test the next day and studied the whole night and only slept for 2 hours. The next day, while he was having the test, he started to feel very tired, sleepy and stressed. He couldn’t concentrate on the test so he failed the test. He started to feel more stressed because of bad grades which might make him take the course again. He couldn’t sleep for more than 4 hours and these bad cycle repeats. Moreover, high stress could also affect the emotion of the students. It can also cause depression which can significantly decrease the academic performance and grade point average of a student. Out of everyone in my class, I enjoy reading books most but, I think, if they are introduced to the books, especially by you, the author, it could make them like reading more than they do.
Everyone goes through stress in their life. It doesn’t matter if you are a kid, teenager, or adult. Everyone stresses, sometimes about even very little things. Along with the stress comes health issues. Such as heart disease, asthma, obesity, diabetes, headaches, depression and anxiety, stomach problems, Alzheimer’s, accelerated aging, premature death. Along with those problems you can do things to cure and help them. Such as getting more sleep, planning out the day, looking at your life in a positive view, and get support. All though a little stress is always a good thing, because it pushes you and helps you thrive and stay on task. Sometimes it is taken to the extreme like in the top ten cities. Just remember to sit back, take a deep breath, and focus!
Summer should be a break for students to learn about themselves and focus on personal achievements. Overall, is summer reading really worth taking time out from students to learn about themselves? When students are able to pick their own summer reading, they are more likely to be invested in the material and take ownership of their learning. In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Reading always became tiresome to me. We had a reading block in class everyday. The reading block was to make us read fifteen minutes straight a day. Ms. Peshca, my seventh grade teacher, ensured that the class would read. I never read the books until we started reading The Hunger Games.
Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. There are many reasons why summer reading is not worth students’ (nor teachers’) time.
